Talk me out of 'Darwin'

DH and I really struggle to agree on names. I'm watching a documentary on Charles Darwin because I'm cool and suggested it to DH, who actually bloody loves it!
Now I'm in a bind. I do really like it, and it's one of few names so far we've agreed on, but I don't know if I'm brave enough to actually name a child this.

Makes me think of the Darwin awards too I'm afraid. I'd worry about bullying if kids worked out the connection. It is a nice name though.

eavers · 10/01/2020 16:59

Darwin is a character in a cartoon my ds watches. He is half goldfish half boy!

EssentialHummus · 10/01/2020 17:01

I know a little one; there are always raised eyebrows when his minder introduces him. I also find it oddly stiff/formal for a young child. I’m not keen.

BorissGiantJohnson · 10/01/2020 17:02

No! Darwin awards.
Having said that, I have heard worse. It's a no from me, but not a "hell no".

ScarlettBlaize · 10/01/2020 17:03

It's not about proving how 'brave' and 'cool' you are. It's another human being, who will in all likelihood outlive you, and who has to live their own life with that name.

jmh740 · 10/01/2020 17:05

I live in a place called darwen so it's a no no from me.

IncrediblySadToo · 10/01/2020 17:05

Nope. The Darwin Awards are too much of a thing for me to get past that. It feels like tempting fate or something ...

MissingLinker · 10/01/2020 17:07

I think Charles Darwin married his first cousin. Does that put you off at all?Grin

TatianaLarina · 10/01/2020 17:10

Darwin awards for me too.

MsTSwift · 10/01/2020 17:10

Would your dh be comfortable with the name if it became his name tomorrow? If not there’s your answer

iloveredwine · 10/01/2020 17:11

That is a character in gumball on cartoon network!

Newfloorlamp · 10/01/2020 17:12

Makes me think of the chimp called Darwin from the Wild Thornberrys cartoon. If you like wildlife and biology how about David after Sir David Attenborough or something nature inspired?

iklboo · 10/01/2020 17:13

The fish character in The Amazing World of Gumball

Katrinawaves · 10/01/2020 17:15

One of our cats is called Darwin. The other is Gumball Grin

NearlyAMumma · 10/01/2020 17:20

Omg I love it

chocatoo · 10/01/2020 17:29

It’s not as bad as some of the ones that I’ve seen on here.

DirtyDeeds · 10/01/2020 17:31

I love it. It was on my list but I wussed out 😀
Go for it!

EvilPea · 10/01/2020 17:33

Our pufferfish is called Darwin!!

I do think its a good name .

My fish is an arsehole though

Lordfrontpaw · 10/01/2020 17:36

I love the Darwin awards! @ alexdgr8 - it’s an award for the most ridiculous death (or taking themselves out of the gene pool) caused by, for example someone stocking a rag into a petroleum tank and lighting it to make a tour home whilst they changed a car tyre. It sounds grim but is usually very very daft.

CharlotteMD · 10/01/2020 18:50

DD's friend at school is called Massimo , he's 6.

Whowaswronghere2 · 10/01/2020 18:51

It's a brilliant name. Do it.

AgnusandMagnus · 10/01/2020 18:52

Nickname Charlie

AgnusandMagnus · 10/01/2020 18:53

Just call him Charles. The man himself would roll his eyes.

PlantPotting · 10/01/2020 19:01

Imagine if he fails science gcse or whatever

All the questions “that’s an unusual name. Is it after the scientist? Are you going to be a scientist?”

Darwin “no I failed science, I’m doing a Btec in woodwork” etc

MrMeeseekscando · 10/01/2020 19:11

I had a hamster called Darwin...
