Iris: Eye-ris or Ear-is??

Settle a debate please! Just when I thought I had settled on a name choice, MN threw me a curve ball.

I love Iris but only the Eye-ris pronunciation. Is this the default? Will she be forever correcting people? I have genuinely never heard Ear-is until now ... thanks guys!

I've never heard it any other way than I-ris.

MsTSwift · 10/01/2020 08:36

Eye ris unless you French perhaps

neighbourhoodwitch · 10/01/2020 08:37

I-ris (I think? - Ear-ris is more of a European pronunciation).

Lebkuchenlovers · 10/01/2020 08:37

Eer is

Poppydaisys · 10/01/2020 08:39

Ear is for me.

Like iridescent or iridium.

NearlyOutedMyself · 10/01/2020 08:40

Eye-ris.

Grufallsosfriend · 10/01/2020 08:42

I know one who's known as EER-is. She's German

Kelsoooo · 10/01/2020 08:42

It's "ai-ruhs"

Most people would say eye-ris (which is correct)

Anyone else, needs to look at how it's meant to be said.

However, as I'm frequently correcting people on how to say Isla....good luck.

ShallICompareTheeToASummersDay · 10/01/2020 08:42

Iris is eye-ris. I have never heard anything different. No, she won’t be correcting people except on mumsnet

Grufallsosfriend · 10/01/2020 08:43

It's "ai-ruhs"

Where does the U come from?! Confused

missmouse101 · 10/01/2020 08:47

Eye ris.

Gonewiththemadness · 10/01/2020 08:48

Eye-ris. I’ve never heard it the other way!

Lavenderblues · 10/01/2020 08:48

I much prefer Eer-is.

CouldBeAGreatMum · 10/01/2020 08:48

Eye ris of course. It's a flower!

Dietcokeaddiction · 10/01/2020 08:50

Eye- Riss.
I can't believe anyone would pronounce it any other way (assuming English is their first language). It's a flower and the coloured part of the eye and both those are pronounced that way.

frankincenseandmur · 10/01/2020 08:50

Eye-ris

Sugarfreejelly · 10/01/2020 08:54

Eye-ris is the standard British English pronunciation. Other dialects and languages may pronounce it differently.

ColaFreezePop · 10/01/2020 09:01

You are over thinking.

She won't be correcting people as it is not an unusual name in the UK, Europe - popular in Slovenia apparently - or the world so how the name is pronounced will depend on someone's accent and place of origin.

Incidentally we delibrately gave our DD such a name so that people around the world would have no difficulty pronouncing it and none of the pronunciations would be "incorrect".

PandaCat · 10/01/2020 09:44

I've never heard anyone say Ear-is

ConstanceL · 10/01/2020 09:46

Eye-ris is the only pronounciation I've heard in the UK. I have heard Ear-ris but only in France. It's a lovely name, good choice OP :)

Lavenderblues · 10/01/2020 09:48

I've heard both pronunciations but prefer Ear is.

It's Ee ris in German and Ee riss in French

SeagullOnTheWind · 10/01/2020 09:50

Wouldn't it be ear-is in Welsh?

Mol5 · 10/01/2020 09:50

I've only ever heard Eye-ris

Peachbubble · 10/01/2020 12:02

Eye-ris, only ever heard it this way

Cohle · 10/01/2020 12:04

Eye-ris. Never heard any other way in the UK.
