Settle a debate please! Just when I thought I had settled on a name choice, MN threw me a curve ball.

I love Iris but only the Eye-ris pronunciation. Is this the default? Will she be forever correcting people? I have genuinely never heard Ear-is until now ... thanks guys!

I’ve only ever heard people say eye-ris.

user1493494961 · 10/01/2020 16:33

Never heard of Ear is.

EugeniaGrace · 10/01/2020 16:39

I’ve heard ear-ris in Portuguese, but not English.

But any name starting with a vowel may have slightly different pronunciations in different languages, so this wouldn’t put me off.

Eye-Ris, like the eye.

BackforGood · 10/01/2020 16:45

Like most, I've only ever heard of "Eye-ris"

Where does the 'Ear' sound come from ? Confused

badg3r · 24/01/2020 21:51

It is eye-ris in English and ear-is in most other European languages.

Mimilamore · 24/01/2020 22:03

Ear is is the German pronunciation

Redonion123 · 24/01/2020 22:04

Eye -ris

Ohyesiam · 24/01/2020 22:15

Eye ris

Elouera · 24/01/2020 22:19

Only ever heard EYE-RIS. Like your eye or the flower. Never heard of EAR-IS!!!

Drabarni · 24/01/2020 22:22

I've only ever heard of eye-ris.

Ear- ris just doesn't sound right.

badg3r · 25/01/2020 13:36

I'm not a logouts at all but I think it is because in almost all other European languages they pronounce I like eee. So eg inès in Spanish is eee-nes and not eye-nes, Irene in Italian is eee-rene and not eye-reen, and Ida in Swedish is eee-dah and not eye-dah.

badg3r · 25/01/2020 13:37

Not a linguist!

Mandarinfish · 25/01/2020 13:41

Agree with most other posters. It's Eye-ris in the UK but Ear-is in many other European countries.

TheVanguardSix · 25/01/2020 13:44

Eye-ris if you and dad are from the UK.
Ear-ris if one or both of you is from France or wherever else it's pronounced this way.
But please just call her Eye-ris if you're both from Lewisham. Grin

KatherineJaneway · 25/01/2020 13:47

Eye-ris

Poppydaisies · 25/01/2020 14:34

Eer-is like iridescent or irrelevant.

Jesskir89 · 26/01/2020 22:49

My niece is iris and it's as in eye-ris noone has ever called her ear-ris

Nonnymum · 26/01/2020 22:52

I've only heard it pronounced eye ris. Never ear is. That sounds odd, where have you heard it pronounced that way?

GlamGiraffe · 26/01/2020 22:56

EYE-ris like the flower. DH and I have both never heard of ear is.
Everything is fine!

PanicAndRun · 26/01/2020 23:01

I'n familiar with both. In the UK if just seen and not heard I'd say it Eye-ris . If in other countries in Europe and just seen ,not heard I'd say Ee-rhys.

In most cases use the pronunciation alongside the name so it shouldn't be an issue.

The "haven't heard it before " and oh like the flower, eye part explanations make me laugh.

Iris is the name for the flower and eye part in other countries too, still pronounced Ee-ris.

Jossina · 26/01/2020 23:27

Never heard anything other than Eye-ris.
