The singer is putting me off.

We’re due to deliver DD on Tuesday and I’m prettt much decided on the name. But the recent popular singer might be putting me off, I’m not sure. I chose the name because it’s not a popular one.. at least it’s not popular in my area and I like the more old fashioned type of names. I feel like because this singer has come about people will think that’s why I’ve chosen the name and/or it will become very popular now.

Name we’ve chosen is Mabel. (Not 110% set on it until we actually see baby as well aware she might not look like a Mabel when it comes to meeting her) but it’s the ‘one’ at the moment.

Would it put you off? Any other suggestions that are like Mabel but... not?

I hadn’t heard of the singer so googled and found out her mum is Neneh Cherry.

Anyway, great name! I’d use it.

I read this thinking you were going to say Adele!

I've never heard of singer called Mabel. If you want am alternative what about Mavis?

NewYearLeaf · 29/12/2019 01:37

Never heard of a singer Mabel Confused

SexlessBoulderBelly · 29/12/2019 01:37

Oh god! Now I feel like I’ve put her out there and made it worse ha!

To be fair, she’s a fairly recent solo artist with a chart topping song.

It was in the charts for some time when I mentioned the name to a friend who’s quite into her too chat songs and said “oh, because of the singer?!” - I hadn’t heard of her until then either and now it’s all I can think of when I hear the name.

I love Ethel and Mavis but OH is not keen.

I think it's a lovely name and I do know who Mabel is.
No offence to Mabel but I don't think in 10 years anyone would make the connection.

SexlessBoulderBelly · 29/12/2019 01:47

@PutOnAHappyFace hm yes I do agree actually and I didn’t think of the long term!

Also not heard of the singer but I do love the name (I thought it was going to be Arianna from the title!).

Amabel is the root name for Mabel I think, in case you like that too. It rhymes with Annabelle.

Iamallatsea · 29/12/2019 01:49

When people first heard my DS’s name they said” oh is he named after ....”(he wasn’t, it was a name we liked and not even that uncommon). Many years later no one comments it’s just his name.

twoturtledove · 29/12/2019 01:49

That's the name I'm using in February for my girl, couldn't give a hoot about the singer. She's not a household name like Rihanna for example so I wouldn't worry! Great choice Grin

bettybattenburg · 29/12/2019 01:51

I've never heard of the singer. Use Mabel, Mavis is not as nice

SexlessBoulderBelly · 29/12/2019 01:51

@twoturtledove likewise! Good luck in February!

I’ve obviously well and truly over thought the singer. I think we’ll ‘stick’ to it for now.. until we see her and I probably go “she is absolutely not a Mabel!” Grin

It is such a stunning name

tamarisk44 · 29/12/2019 10:28

Mabel is my absolute favourite girl's name and I totally get that the singer's name irks you, but she likely won't be popular forever and if you've found a name you love you should go for it Smile

daisypond · 29/12/2019 10:30

I immediately thought of the singer. In fact, I have always assumed it is her who has inadvertently popularised the name Mabel.

emilybrontescorsett · 29/12/2019 10:57

I've heard of Mabel but I don't think the name is that unusual as to make the connection.

^Me too

Spidey66 · 29/12/2019 11:00

I'd not heard of Mabel, but if her mum's Nenah Cherry I like her already.

Mabel's a cute name. Go for it.

Whatsyourflava · 29/12/2019 11:00

I’ve never heard of the singer. It’s hardly Adele or Elvis is it 🤣

Mabel is just the most gorgeous name. Don’t let this put you off

Spidey66 · 29/12/2019 11:03

Ps I don't like Ethel or Mavis, they're taking the current old name fashion too far! Plus you do know Lily Allen's oldest is called Ethel, you may get people thinking you've copied Lily Allen!

JacquesHammer · 29/12/2019 11:05

I know a few girls named Mabel. None as a result of the singer.

Maybe she’s in fact putting people off Grin

Didiplanthis · 29/12/2019 11:07

Mabel is a brilliant name. I know one and she is brilliant. Quirky, independent and just fab.

Primrosepenny · 29/12/2019 13:16

I’m in my early 20s but have never heard of the singer.
Considering there’s people out there who name their kids Bowie, Miley and Etta, I wouldn’t worry about naming your child the same name as a relatively unknown singer

RollingOutOfBed · 29/12/2019 13:32

I'm not familiar with the singer but Mabel is such an ugly name.

nowaypose · 29/12/2019 16:54

I didn’t know there was a singer called Mabel so I think you’re safe. It’s a bit of a dogs name though imo.
