We’ve done unusual, but what old names do you rarely hear now?

I’ll start with Gary.

I know an adult Gary but no little Gary’s.

Samantha. Again I know adults but not little ones.

Sonia.

In the late 80s and throughout the 90s for some reason this name became so popular amongst Asians. Not only in England though but also Pakistan and India.

I live in a small town in England and I know 8 asian girls with that name, all in their 20s & 30s.

I heard young children today Albert, Mabel and Matilda (I may have sung waltzing Matilda a good few times).

Honeybee85 · 31/12/2019 01:01

I love the name Matilda!
If I ever have daughter it’s on my list of potential names!

Mammyloveswine · 31/12/2019 02:02

Linda, Paula, June, Susan, Joan, Carol, Michelle, Debbie, Sarah, Laura, Jennifer.... I've not heard of a little girl with these names for years! I'm a teacher too!

Dd is 12 and has a Peter, Susan and Lucy in her class. Shame there's no Edmund or it would have been all the Pevensey children.

I know a 4 year old Keith. Why? Why?

QueenOfTheAndals · 31/12/2019 21:53

I have a theory that people tend to like the names of their grandparents' generation. So all the little Florences, Mabels and Alfreds will call their children Pauline, Kevin or Sheila!

Rainallnight · 31/12/2019 21:55

Colin.

Engard · 31/12/2019 21:57

We're expecting a Benjamin, when I told the staff at my daughters nursery They said they hadn't had a Ben in years! Have we chosen a name on its way out??? Shock

mogtheexcellent · 31/12/2019 22:00

I know a 4 year old Ian.

LuluJakey1 · 31/12/2019 22:00

Our 3 DC all have, because DH insisted, a Scottish Jacobite middle name as well as first and middle names. He is not Scottish but has Scottish roots. I just hope they are ignored on school registers.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 31/12/2019 22:58

When I was a child (80s) there were 6 Rebecca's in my class and 5 of them had a sister called Rachel.
I haven't heard of a Young rebecca/Rachel for years.

Also it was very fashionable to use Louise as a middle name- not sure how common that is these days?

Underneaththetree · 31/12/2019 23:17

I’m an early 90s baby and have Louise for a middle name, I remember literally every other girl also had it as theirs.

Not so common now- I think May/Mae and Rose are today’s equivalents of ‘Louise’

DelphiniumBlue · 31/12/2019 23:26

I think it depends where in the country you are. In my school we have at least 3 or 4 Davids and Peters, lots of variations on Eleanor/Ellie/ Nell, and Matilda , Daniel, Ben , Sam ,Albert/ Alfie are not unusual. The Frankies are all girls.
But The youngest Mark I know is 25, Stephen is 28. I don't know any Gary or Ian under 50. No Debbies or Susans who are not middle-aged.

MrsMillerbecameababy · 31/12/2019 23:29

Engard It's been the number one baby name in Germany for a few years on the trot... I also know of baby Bens in England. I think Ben is like Thomas and James in that it never really raises eyebrows and although there are peaks in popularity it never completely goes away.
