Silver for a girl?

This was suggested to me on another post and I love it!

Thinking she could be Silvie for short if she wanted something more “normal”.

What do you think? I don’t mind brutal honesty.

Second choice right now is probably Rumer, or maybe just Rue.

Not unless she has four legs and whinnies.

catchyjem · 18/12/2019 09:18

I think Sylvia is a lovely name, Silver however sounds more like a pet or a stripper.

owlofathena · 18/12/2019 09:19

I really like both of those names. There is a Silver at my daughter's dance class and she really seems to suit it.
I really like Rumer/rue. It's a name I considered for this baby if she was a DD but as our first DD has a name beginning with R and ends in a we rejected it. Having a boy anyway so doesn't matter.
Have you considered Runa? Similar sound and can be shortened to Rue

TheLastBiscuitInTheJar · 18/12/2019 09:21

I'm not a fan of Rumer either. Especially because of the potential for "I heard a rumour" type jokes.

Sylvie is lovely though.

ImportantWater · 18/12/2019 09:21

It sounds like the name of an older person to me, probably because I think of silver hair. Winter as a name has the same connotations for me, I think of an elegant older woman, a bit bohemian, with silver hair. But I suppose all elegant older women had to be a baby once!

puds11 · 18/12/2019 09:26

I don’t like either. She would get a lot of stick for either name. You could do Silvia and use silver as a nickname?

sue51 · 18/12/2019 09:28

Sylvia is lovely and Sylvie works as a nickname for it. Silver doesn't sound quite right as a name.

stupidtabloidheadlines · 18/12/2019 09:32

It makes me think of Long John Silver. Ooo arrrrgh!

Santasy · 18/12/2019 09:32

"Sail on, silver girl..."

I like it.

Clangus00 · 18/12/2019 09:34

The Lone Ranger’s horse.
I don’t like it BUT it’s your choice.

Notsure94 · 18/12/2019 09:34

I've always liked those 50s names like Sylvia and Gloria. Silver is nice!

Rumbelow · 18/12/2019 10:08

I thought it works probably prove a bit Marmite! That’s what I especially like about Silver though, she could choose a more mainstream nickname if she doesn’t like it. Glad to hear there are a few out there!

God, I am sorry OP, but I really hate the name Sylvie. It’s a name for a tiny longhaired chihuahua with a pink dress on and a ribbon in her hair or a stripper’s name IMO.

Silver is nice but please no Sylvie.

Sorry OP, if I ever heard a child was called Silver I'd just think of earrings or bangles and wonder why her parents felt they were achieving by such a strange choice.

Why not Mud? Or Lithium? ;-)

TheLastBiscuitInTheJar · 18/12/2019 10:19

God, I am sorry OP, but I really hate the name Sylvie. It’s a name for a tiny longhaired chihuahua with a pink dress on and a ribbon in her hair or a stripper’s name IMO.

And I'd say that Silver is the name of a horse or a stripper.

Wombatstew · 18/12/2019 10:19

I love it, I would spell it Sylva or possible Silva though.

peachescariad · 18/12/2019 10:23

Not unless you don't mind knowing that some teachers will rip the piss out of it in the staff room..... I work in a school and it happens.

TatianaLarina · 18/12/2019 10:24

I quite like Silver which is odd as I don’t really like names that are not names.

Don’t like Sylvia though and the meaning/etymology is completely different.

TartanMarbled · 18/12/2019 13:18

Gorgeous

Winterdaysarehere · 18/12/2019 13:22

Hi ho...
Or ho ho (ho)??
Time to blame the hormones op.

Honeybee85 · 18/12/2019 13:26

@TheLastBiscuitInTheJar

Silver as a name for a stripper?
I’d name myself Diamond Dolly or Platinum Patty I were a stripper Grin

ParkheadParadise · 18/12/2019 13:27

It's a No from me
I'm now singing this to dd she not impressed.

And it's high ho silver lining, anywhere you go now baby
I see your sun is shining
But I won't make a fuss, though it's obvious

TheLastBiscuitInTheJar · 18/12/2019 14:01

It sounds more like a stripper's name than Sylvie imho which sounds too sedate for a stripper.

TheLastBiscuitInTheJar · 18/12/2019 14:02

Though I still have stronger horse associations.
