Silver for a girl?

This was suggested to me on another post and I love it!

Thinking she could be Silvie for short if she wanted something more “normal”.

What do you think? I don’t mind brutal honesty.

Second choice right now is probably Rumer, or maybe just Rue.

What about Syvlie? I do like Silver though too Grin

Allthebears · 22/12/2019 23:04

I knew a Silva. Not too keen if I'm honest. Sylva seems nicer for some reason.

BackforGood · 22/12/2019 23:28

Porr dd - she would spend all her life saying... "No, not Sylvia." "Yes, I know it sounds like that" "Yes, I know Silver isn't a name" No, I'm beginning to suspect My Mum didn't like me"

Rumer is even worse.

DramaAlpaca · 23/12/2019 01:25

Silver isn't great, but it's so much better than Rumer.

ThighThighOfthigh · 23/12/2019 23:21

Sylvie is nice, i don't think it would be easy to wear any of the others.

StanleyWalkersThirdWife · 23/12/2019 23:53

Silver is cool and Sylvie is a cute nn!

Maybe its because there was a character in 90210 called silver so it doesnt sound too out there to me

Mumsnut · 24/12/2019 00:19

There would be ‘tarnished’ jokes as soon as she approaches teendom

pallisers · 24/12/2019 00:20

Sylvia is a great name though. She could be Silver as a nickname.

treepee · 24/12/2019 06:57

Knew a Silva through work, I think she was South American. I like it, remember MNs is a weird place for baby names that aren't English & in the Top 20. I have a unusual name in the Uk (popular in my parents country). Never been teased for it etc. Particularly if you grow up & work in London there are so many international names that you don't think about it really.

BikeRunSki · 24/12/2019 07:18

A couple of things:
Rue is the French word for street, and in English means “regret”.
Silva is a Scandinavian surname, and the name of a company who make compasses (the map reading ones, not for drawing circles).

I really like Sylvie though.

TheVanguardSix · 24/12/2019 07:23

Hi ho Silver and away!

TheVanguardSix · 24/12/2019 07:26

Silva is a Scandinavian surname

It's Portuguese. Sorry. I just had to point out that Silva is indeed a surname. But it is absolutely not Scandinavian. The compass company you mention, Silva Compass, IS indeed Scandinavian, but none of the founders are named Silva. They have typical Scandinavian names.

BikeRunSki · 24/12/2019 07:31

Ok, thanks @TheVanguardSix. I think I assumed it was a Scandinavian none since the company is Scandinavian. I’ve slapped my fingers for making assumptions!Grin

The point still stands about it being a surname in a different language, whether that influences the OP’s name decision.

Mummyeyes · 24/12/2019 07:38

That's not exactly professional is it? I coach and we get all sorts of names. Silver makes me think of "silvertongued" meaning speaking beautifully.

RickOShay · 24/12/2019 07:44

I like it.

FatherRabulaConundrum · 24/12/2019 09:14

Agree with PP that it's not the prettiest word visually, and Sliver - easy misspelling - is even worse.

I really like Sylvia, though.

bluechameleon · 24/12/2019 10:59

Rue as in regret? I don't usually care about meanings of names but when it is an actual word with a not-so-pleasant meaning I'd avoid it

YourOpinionIsNoted · 24/12/2019 19:47

silver-tongued doesn't mean a beautiful speaker, it denotes an especially persuasive one. Often in a not very positive way - someone who can talk themselves out of trouble, or talk other people into it!
