Nina - having second thoughts

BornSnippy · 08/12/2019 08:16

We have called our newborn Nina which we see as a strong, fun, classic, international and sassy name.

We have had some really negative reactions which have shocked me.

What do people think of Nina? She’s not registered yet so we could change.

Great name!! I know a Nina in DS2's class.

Xiaoxiong · 08/12/2019 08:30

So meant to say it's not as frequent as the many names in his class like Evie/Ivy/Ellie (multiples of all of those), but not odd or unusual in any way.

Xiaoxiong · 08/12/2019 08:31

And come to think of it, DS2's friend Nina actually IS strong, fun and sassy!

stophuggingme · 08/12/2019 08:32

Love it

flippinehh · 08/12/2019 08:32

Great name.

DinoSn0re · 08/12/2019 08:33

It’s a fantastic name. Wish I had used it.

JassyRadlett · 08/12/2019 08:35

Brilliant name - it was top of my list for a girl, I love it.

NannyR · 08/12/2019 08:35

I love it, it's a great name!

Batmanandrobin123 · 08/12/2019 08:46

It's a great name. What have people said? How rude!

PaquitaVariation · 08/12/2019 08:47

My dds best friend is Nina, lovely name.

IdleBet · 08/12/2019 08:51

We have had some really negative reactions which have shocked me.

Who on earth would slate a name you have already chosen? Do they mean to be so rude?

I know a Nina, she is lovely. It's a gorgeous name.

Angie6868 · 08/12/2019 08:55

I'm not keen on it to be honest. Although I love Nina Simone

daisypond · 08/12/2019 08:56

It’s a great name.

BornSnippy · 08/12/2019 08:56

It’s mainly my MiL who objects. She had a really visceral negative reaction when we announced the name and she’s currently calling the baby Catherine which is her middle name.

She’s hasn’t told us she hates it exactly but she keeps saying “are you sure?” “I love the name Catherine, it’s a proper name you can go through life with.” “Isn’t Nina rather like Tina?” “don’t rush into registering”.

Urgh ignore her. Cheeky bitch. Nina is cool.

Leopardprintboots · 08/12/2019 08:59

Nina is great

I like Catherine but I never really know if it’s a two or three syllable name I actually find it really hard to say. I prefer Nina

IdleBet · 08/12/2019 08:59

She's batshit. Every time she calls her Catherine just ask MIL if she's feeling ok as she sounds a bit confused.

IdleBet · 08/12/2019 09:02

I'm the type to dig my heels in if somebody tried to change my mind.

I would be determined to stick to my choice.

She had her time naming her DC.

BornSnippy · 08/12/2019 09:04

Catherine is a family name which will be the middle name no matter not. But we would never use it as a first name.

If we don’t use Nina we would probably go with Rose or Rosa.

GuppytheCat · 08/12/2019 09:06

I like it, and Nina Catherine works well. Maybe your MIL just knew an awful one at school.

daisypond · 08/12/2019 09:07

Your MiL is calling the baby by her own middle name? That is terrible. Catherine is a nice name, but it’s not the name you, as parents, have picked.

daisypond · 08/12/2019 09:08

Oh, I see. It’s the baby’s middle name. Nevertheless, Nina is lovely.

Batmanandrobin123 · 08/12/2019 09:10

Ignore ignore! Sometimes the older generation can be misguided on what is an acceptable name. It is so rude of her to refuse to use her name 🙄
Stick to your guns Nina Catherine is gorgeous.

thespellhasbeenbroken123 · 08/12/2019 09:10

You don't have a name problem
You have a MIL problem

I don't know how you're not more fuming at her tbh?

miahadalittlelamb · 08/12/2019 09:12

I have to agree with ur MIL... sorry.

I much prefer catherine, rose or Rosa.

Nina is very insubstantial to me. Though perhaps has a nickname for Antonia?

Antonia catherine is lovely. And you could still call her Nina?

Though I do love rose/Rosa.

Also kids at school may to a siren sound “neenaw” which would be annoying.
