Fully acknowledge this might just be hormones talking. Have recently had a gorgeous baby boy. We're calling him Theo, haven't registered him yet but planning to register him as Theodore as I like the flexibility of him having a longer version and option to use Ted as a nickname instead of Theo if he prefers. Have just been thinking about Theoden (name from Lord of the Rings), really like the sound of it and wondered if it would be a good alternative long form instead of Theodore? Or is this crazy talk??

Definitely crazy talk! Theodore is much nicer. People will assume that’s his name anyway and he will keep having to correct people.

Hormones are definitely talking. Stick to classic Theodore. You can call him theoden has a nickname if you must.

Personally I love it but probably the only one who will on here.

It's not really one of those crazy made up just to be whacky or 'different' names you usually see on here so if you and dp love the name go for it. Who cares what anyone else thinks?
BTW it is actually a real name.

I always get Theoden and Denithor mixed up. Which one went mad and tried to cremate his son? I'd definitely avoid that name... Seriously(ish) I'd probably go for something more conventional but I like the sound of Theoden more than Theodore...

I like Theoden. Tolkien’s background as a linguist ensured his made up names and languages have a ring of plausibility to them. It’s not like calling a kid Reneesmee.

I considered it for one of my lot, but my now ex can't say the th sound so he would have ended up as Feoden or Feo, and I would have gone mad!

Honestly, I’d think that you liked Theo but couldn’t possibly use something so popular so had to put a yoonique spin on it. I’ve seen and read Lord of the Ring lots of times, although not that recently and I wouldn’t have made the connection without you pointing it out (clearly I have a shit memory) so I’d probably just think it’s try hard and a bit silly. Theo/Theodore is absolutely lovely; go with that.

I have to say I totally love the name. I’m usually quite traditionalist with names but Theoden has a lovely look and sound. Beautiful!
