Theoden

Fully acknowledge this might just be hormones talking. Have recently had a gorgeous baby boy. We're calling him Theo, haven't registered him yet but planning to register him as Theodore as I like the flexibility of him having a longer version and option to use Ted as a nickname instead of Theo if he prefers. Have just been thinking about Theoden (name from Lord of the Rings), really like the sound of it and wondered if it would be a good alternative long form instead of Theodore? Or is this crazy talk??

It's THAYoden rather than THEEoden though, isn't it? So Theo wouldn't really work as a nickname.

FloraGreysteel · 21/11/2019 21:12

Good god, no! And I speak as a fan of Lord of the Rings!

FloraGreysteel · 21/11/2019 21:13

@peachgreen is right re: pronunciation.

Iamthewombat · 21/11/2019 21:16

Fine but you have to call the sibling Grima Wormtongue.

Tee hee!

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 21/11/2019 21:30

Honestly, just register him as Theo. We have never for one minute thought 'I wish we'd given DS a longer name than the one we use every single day.'

And it is Thay-oh-den so not really a long for Theo anyway.

But 'A sore day, a red day, and the sun rises!' Is my favourite bit from all the movies so thanks for the excuse to watch it again!

Kindlethefourth · 21/11/2019 21:52

I skim read it as 'The Odeon' as in cinema

ToTheRegimentIWishIWasThere · 21/11/2019 21:54

Love it.

GeorgeTheFirst · 21/11/2019 21:56

It's the hormones, which is completely understandable. Stick with Theodore.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 21/11/2019 21:58

I love it! Then you can call your next kids Eomer and Eowyn.

Omashu · 21/11/2019 22:19

Oh I love it!

bridgetreilly · 21/11/2019 23:16

I know an Eowyn. Theoden is better than that.

CravingCheese · 22/11/2019 06:22

Theoden, house of Eorl, from Thengel and Merwen. King of Rohan!

I really don't think I could resist if I actually met someone named Theoden....

JacquesHammer · 22/11/2019 06:43

Diminutives don’t have to be a direct use of the sounds from the longer name though.

I know a Joseph who is a Joss.

In my family we had Margaret who was Maggie and a Lilian who was Lila.

99point9FahrenheitDegrees · 22/11/2019 09:30

DOOOOOO ITTTTTTT!! Absolutely awesome. Much better than Theodore, and he can just use Theo if he prefers. RIDE! RIDE TO THE REGISTRY OFFICE!

RockinHippy · 22/11/2019 09:32

Hormones, don't listen to them

BlueChampagne · 22/11/2019 13:16

Theoden means lord or king in Old English. So no different to Rex.

WindFlower92 · 22/11/2019 13:18

I love it! But then I love LOTR Grin

Queenoftheashes · 22/11/2019 13:24

I love it. And Theo can still be short name. My shortened name has first syllable pronounced differently to my longer name. It’s fine.

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 22/11/2019 15:54

I like it. Yes, I know it's pronounced Thay-oden, but you can still use Theo or Ted for short. Lots of people use nicknames that don't sound much like derivations of a full name, like Betty for Elizabeth or Kate for Katherine.

In short - DO IT, DO IT, DO IT!

FraggleRocking · 22/11/2019 18:58

@99point9FahrenheitDegrees I just woke my baby up laughing at this 😂

spiderlight · 22/11/2019 19:21

Yes! Do it!

fireworkbaby · 23/11/2019 22:45

Thanks all, mixed responses! We've decided to stick with Theodore (but will still have a soft spot for Theoden!)

fireworkbaby thank goodness one of us is sensible Grin

MissHenty · 24/11/2019 09:22

Excellent choice @fireworkbaby ❤️
Congratulations on making a decision

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 27/11/2019 00:50

I much prefer Theodore.

Another alternative would be Theon, like Theon Greyjoy in GOT. I must say I do like that.
