Hello,

We have narrowed boys names down to Rowan and Nathan now. I like both but have slight preference for Rowan.
(We have a Luke and Isaac already )

DH prefers Nathan.

I do like shortening of 'nate'
Not as keen on the shortening of 'row' but I don't mind others calling him this, I just would not call him this personally.

I'm not really concerned with popularity
(I know Rowan is more popular but as long as not in top 20 i don't mind too much)

Just interested to see which name people like best? This may help me to decide
I won't be offended at all, if not your cup of tea!

Many thanks for your help x

Nathan sounds lovely with Isaac and Luke - all really love classic names that won’t date.

Sorry Rowan is just too 2018/2019 trendy for me. There was two babies called “Roman” today on the CBeebies programme “Baby Club” (out of only about 10 babies)! It’s so common now and still shooting up. I just find the names too similar and I don’t like the nickname Row.

Nathan/Nate is very cool and very underused.

Hope you’re getting on ok with deciding. Your baby is beautiful!!

Flymetothestars · 23/11/2019 20:51

I actually prefer Rowan for a girl but that’s probably because I know a couple of female Rowans. I like girls names on boys and boys names on girls though normally

SilverBangle · 24/11/2019 01:58

I'm not fan of Rowan for a girl or boy tbh

uncomfortablydumb53 · 24/11/2019 09:09

@Leopardprintboots
I have a 25 year old Callum and an 18 year old Lucas

Thinkingsticks · 24/11/2019 10:51

@uncomfortablydumb53

Aww thank you, oh that's funny, I do like Callum and We did actually consider it for a while, but know quite a few. I love nn of just 'Cal' and my luke was nearly a Lucas! Xx

I love Rowan. It's a much nicer name. Nate is a nice nickname for Nathan but the full name itself is not for me.

PlantPotting · 24/11/2019 11:33

Nathan 🤩 Nate 🤩 actually really suits him too!

Rowan is ok but not a name I’d pick . Don’t like nn Row, it just doesn’t have nice ring to it. I agree with PP, too many Roman’s being born, just makes the name Roman/Rohan unusable I think. I have a name that’s very similar to another (more popular) name and I am forever correcting people...! you’d think after 30 years I’d be used to it 😂 NOPE!

Your baby is gorgeous @Thinkingsticks ! Luke and Isaac are beautiful names. If it were my baby I’d definitely pick Nathan/Nate- it’s a great fit with siblings and just an all round great underused but classy strong name. I also think the name is a “grower” myself. The next generation will find the name Nathan/Nate cool and interesting I think. Whereas Roman’s will be everywhere for a few years and will then date.

Congratulations on your third little boy 💙💙💙

uncomfortablydumb53 · 24/11/2019 12:48

@Thinkingsticks
I find names so fascinating but whatever your choice I'm sure your gorgeous boy will just "be" his name
Congratulations again

uncomfortablydumb53 · 24/11/2019 12:55

Just to add none of mine have ever shortened their names or had nicknames

PrincessAnnaOfArundale · 24/11/2019 12:57

I have a 7 year old Rowan and he's just adorable.... I may be biased 😆. Nathan to me seems a bit dated now if I'm honest. I went to school with a Nathan who was always in trouble so again I am biased but I'm not keen on it.

Whatsyourflava · 24/11/2019 13:21

My NCT group has got 2 Roman’s! ‘Roman Kemp’ effect maybe or maybe something else I’m not aware of?
I prefer Nathan/Nate, a classy name with longevity. Roman & Rohan & Rowan not my cup of tea as they’re too trendy for me. Seem to be all the rage at the moment, so could date very quickly like 80s names like “kirsty” or “Gemma” have now. Those names also came from nowhere, got so popular yet are almost extinct now.
Your other sibling names are excellent solid choices.

Thinkingsticks · 24/11/2019 16:49

We have decided to call him Nathan Sonny
Thanks everyone for your feedback and help Smile xx

What about Nathaniel? Inevitably he will still end up being called Nathan for short.

Whatsyourflava · 24/11/2019 16:54

Oh wow Sonny- what a cool middle name @Thinkingsticks

Thank you for updating us! What a lovely name! He really does look like a Nathan/Nate from that photo - really suits x

MissHenty · 24/11/2019 20:54

Nathan Sonny is perfect !!!
thank you so much for letting us know @Thinkingsticks - now you can concentrate on enjoying lovely little Nathan/Nate. What did your family think of his gorgeous name? I remember you saying they weren’t too keen on Isaac at first but soon saw sense.
Congratulations again ❤️

Boobahs · 24/11/2019 21:20

We didn't like Nathaniel or Nathan, so went with Nate as our little boy's proper name. Congratulations he's gorgeous x

Thinkingsticks · 24/11/2019 21:31

@Boobahs thank you x yes I will prob call him nate lots, nathan when he is naughty 😂

@MissHenty thank you, yes everyone seems to like Nathan and nate. My mum didn't say anything about Sonny! so she probably doesn't like it, 😂

The boys really like it too. They prefer it to Rowan. Luke said there are quite a few Rowans in his high school but only one Nathaniel. Thanks again for your feedback x
@Whatsyourflava thank you ☺ x

I love both these names, especially Rowan.
You have great taste in names!

Flymetothestars · 25/11/2019 16:18

Congratulations @Thinkingsticks I much preferred Nathan/Nate! You made a brilliant choice there. A classy strong name and so pleased to hear your sons and mum approve of Nathan/Nate too.

Rowan is likely to date and is too similar to other very popular “Trendy” names.

Sonny is a fab middle name. Funny that your mum went quiet- bet she’d be shocked to hear that Sonny is actually higher in the name charts than Nathan 🤣

Thank you for updating us.

Thinkingsticks · 25/11/2019 16:41

@elderlee

Aww thank you, yes I think they are both nice names. Boys names are hard x

@flymetothestars
I think they are both nice names and the more I say Nathan the more I like it. There were actually loads of names I liked just as much as these two, but OH dismissed them and didn't seem to like any boys names at all! I think sonny is so cute for a little boy but my worry was it might sound a bit daft on a grown man, but that's prob just me over thinking things. But anyway we both like both names (it's a miracle!) Got there in the end, hey 😁 Thanks again Xx

Hate the name Nathan. Rowan for sure!

Flymetothestars · 25/11/2019 16:55

@lostandconfused2 they’ve already decided 🤦‍♀️

Thinkingsticks · 25/11/2019 16:58

Haha, oh dear, well, i did ask for feedback and we can't all like the same names can we 😂 x

OP posts:
Leopardprintboots · 25/11/2019 17:03

I 10000% approve of your choice @Thinkingsticks ! Nathan or Nate is a very rare combination of being classic and familiar yet unusual and interesting with a cool nickname. Agree with PP, Rowan is ok but more risky as far more likely to date given it’s so trendy and also some see it as a girls name (especially in Scotland where it’s top 100 for girls not boys)

Your little boy is so sweet

thunderandsunshine01 · 25/11/2019 17:10

I like both about equal really. Nate and Ro are both pretty cool nicknames imo.

It's sounds as though you wouldn't be mad either way - Which one of you got the preference choice for your last DC name?
