Hello,

We have narrowed boys names down to Rowan and Nathan now. I like both but have slight preference for Rowan.
(We have a Luke and Isaac already )

DH prefers Nathan.

I do like shortening of 'nate'
Not as keen on the shortening of 'row' but I don't mind others calling him this, I just would not call him this personally.

I'm not really concerned with popularity
(I know Rowan is more popular but as long as not in top 20 i don't mind too much)

Just interested to see which name people like best? This may help me to decide
I won't be offended at all, if not your cup of tea!

Many thanks for your help x

Ah he’s absolutely GORGEOUS OP! Thank you for posting. congratulations!

I think Nathan/Nate would suit him perfectly!

Luke Isaac and Nathan 😍

I'd say Nathan (although I prefer Nathaniel). I like the shortening to Nate.

teenmom2be · 20/11/2019 20:03

Rowan all the way 💃🏻💃🏻💯💯

codenameduchess · 20/11/2019 20:04

I've just named my boy Nathan, so that's obviously my preference!
Although it's relatively popular overall, I've never actually met a Nathan or Nate so I don't think it's as popular in the north east- where every little boy seems to be Alfie, Freddy, Max or Ezra.

JenniferM1989 · 20/11/2019 20:05

Nathan

JenniferM1989 · 20/11/2019 20:07

Just saw the photo! How cute ♥️ definitely Nathan

Eeeeek2 · 20/11/2019 20:09

How gorgeous. He looks like a Nathan to me, I like Nathan sonny. But I prefere Rowan Nathan to Nathan Rowan.

helpmum2003 · 20/11/2019 20:13

He's gorgeous 💙

Thinkingsticks · 20/11/2019 20:21

@Eeeeek2

Thanks, I agree, Rowan Nathan sounds better than Nathan Rowan. Yes quite like Nathan sonny I think!

@JenniferM1989 thank you x
@codenameduchess Thanks, I don't think it's popular here either x
@MissHenty ahh thank you x

I like both with a slight preference for Nathan and I think it goes better with his brothers' name.

Leopardprintboots · 20/11/2019 20:51

I 100% prefer Nathan/Nate and think it will really suit the little chap, who, by the way is gorgeous! 💐🥰🤩 @Thinkingsticks - congratulations

I think I already said, but I work with newborns and the volume of baby “Roman”s I’ve come across this last year really puts me off the names Roman, Rowan (or Ronan) I’m afraid. All just too similar. Roman/Rowan is a very “trendy” name this past 2 years, that is much more likely to date, whereas Nathan, Luke and Isaac are classic.

I’m going to be honest, “trendy” names like Roman/Rowan and Hunter etc... sound a bit ‘C word’ (rhymes with “Gav”) to me but I can understand that word is offensive and my mind shouldn’t really think those thoughts, really sorry!

Thinkingsticks · 20/11/2019 21:08

@Leopardprintboots
Thank you, no offence taken, I just like Rowan because its a tree name, and sounds a bit lord of the ringish!
I'm a florist and love all things botanical. But unfortunately no girls for flower names! 😂

Reasons for picking the others names, i just love the sound and meaning of Isaac 'laughter' and luke I've always liked.

I suppose I don't really want a name that screams I was born in 2019, do you think this is the case with Rowan?
my own name is is very 80s!

Thanks x

@Thinkingsticks any more children planned? Maybe you can use your flower names yet 😆 (mum of all boys here too by the way 🙋‍♀️). I do see Rowan as more of a feminine/female sounding name actually but that’s just me (and Scotland too I suppose given the charts there).

Personally, I do think that Roman and Rowan will date seen as these are two names that have never ever been in top 100 before and were last year’s fastest rising names (Roman in particular looks set to reach the top 20 soon on current growth patterns). Coming from literally nowhere and shooting up the top 100 like this is a recipe for “dating”. These two names seem like some of the most likely names to date to be honest (maybe Hunter too as that’s following a similar growth pattern), but then it’s not the end of the world to have a dated name I guess.

Nathan/Nate seems like a safer choice in my opinion. Rowan is likely to be at school with “Roman”s and potentially female Rowans, just depends if that bothers you or not. Plus I know you’re not keen on nickname Row so that could bother you when people inevitably start using it (I know you’ve said you won’t use it). Whereas you like the nickname Nate so that’s a plus.

But feel free to ignore me!! It’s your baby of course. He looks so alert by the way 🥰 Lovely boy ❤️

Leopardprintboots · 20/11/2019 22:24

Nathan Sonny
Nathan Oak
Nathan River

are all really great by the way! You could always pick 2 middle names if you’re having trouble narrowing it down to 1 middle name

Otherwisebaldandunconvincing · 20/11/2019 23:21

I prefer Nathan.
The adult Nathan I know is really Nathaniel but I didn't know till he got married! I love Nathaniel NN Nat or Nate. I do like Nathan though.
I like Rowan but the only ones I know are girls apart from the famous ones.

EmmaC78 · 20/11/2019 23:26

Congragulations. I prefer Nathan.

ittooshallpass · 20/11/2019 23:41

I much prefer Nathan. Rowen always sounds a bit wet to me, sorry.

TiddyTid · 20/11/2019 23:42

Nathan is nice. Rowan reminds me of mr bean

TiddyTid · 20/11/2019 23:43

Just seen the pic he's beautiful!

tabbiemoo · 20/11/2019 23:58

Aww gorgeous baby.
I prefer Rowan by a long way. Sorry but completely agree with pp Nathan is like Darren or Jason, it just sounds very... EastEnders to me. Nate I could possibly live with.

AutumnColours9 · 21/11/2019 00:08

Nathan much nicer

AutumnColours9 · 21/11/2019 00:09

I know a few Rowans and they're all girls. Not that it matters but could for some.

alexdgr8 · 21/11/2019 00:14

I think Nathaniel sounds good, could be shortened to Nathan informally if wished, and goes well with the other two biblical names.
