Hello,

We have narrowed boys names down to Rowan and Nathan now. I like both but have slight preference for Rowan.
(We have a Luke and Isaac already )

DH prefers Nathan.

I do like shortening of 'nate'
Not as keen on the shortening of 'row' but I don't mind others calling him this, I just would not call him this personally.

I'm not really concerned with popularity
(I know Rowan is more popular but as long as not in top 20 i don't mind too much)

Just interested to see which name people like best? This may help me to decide
I won't be offended at all, if not your cup of tea!

Many thanks for your help x

I don’t love either, but Rowan gets my vote

finallychangedmyusername · 20/11/2019 17:13

Definitely Nathan

FizzyGreenWater · 20/11/2019 17:14

Hmm sorry I'm going to buck the trend - I like Nate, like Nathaniel but Nathan is awful - it's up there with Darren for me Confused

I like Rowan but yes getting more popular.

sleepismysuperpower1 · 20/11/2019 17:26

I know a Nathan and he goes by Nattie, so that is another nn choice x

crustycrab · 20/11/2019 17:41

Nathan. Definitely.

Did someone just actually suggest Herbert ConfusedGrin

MissHenty · 20/11/2019 17:47

@crustycrab not me 🤭🤥🤫

Was just thinking of middle names with a nature vibe but maybe I got carried away! There’s some more ‘normal’ names listed there too 😆

Chirpychirpy3 · 20/11/2019 17:59

Nathan :)

FizzyGreenWater · 20/11/2019 18:24

How about Rory OP? Quite rufty-tufty and nature-like but not trendy like Rowan. And familiar yet not current at all like Nathan?

Thinkingsticks · 20/11/2019 18:32

Hmmm not sure about Nathan Rowan....

But having a more unusual nature name as a middle name is a good idea, thanks @MissHenty

Seems to be more love for Nathan.
Is it a bit boring though?

@fizzygreenwater that's ok, thanks for your feedback.

I actually do like forrest but forever linked to forest gump now, and would just get run Forest run!!

Ideas, are these really bad, do any seem/sound right?

Nathan oak?
Nathan river?
Nathan Sonny?
Rowan Nathan?
Rowan Leo?

Thanks x

Baby has already arrived. Does anyone know if there is a way to post a photo on here?

Than maybe you could see what he suits!

Thanks x

I personally don’t find Nathan boring as it’s pretty unusual these days (and has never been a top 10 name so you don’t come across many).

I DEFINITELY do not think Nathan will seem boring to the next generation as it’s out of the top 100 now and is on a decline numbers wise year on year, so it’ll be very uncommon to meet another Nathan/Nate at school by the time your son gets to school.

On the other hand whilst Rowan seems more unique to our generation’s ears these days, the next generation could potentially view it as a boring name given that Roman and Rowan is on such an upswing. Roman is likely to be top 20 in the next couple of years on current growth trajectory, so Roman will become very run of the mill name.

The same way Noah would have been very rare 30 years ago so feels quite unique and special to our generation but nowadays in school you could say this generation of Noah’s may find their name slightly boring as there’s likely to be quite a few of them (love the name though).

I think it’s important to think how your child’s generation might view their name but maybe that’s just me 😆

If you’re wanting a more unusual middle name (and I think that’s a GREAT idea), then I’d avoid Leo as that’s very popular (number 6 in the charts and still rising year on year)

Nathan River and Nathan Sonny are cool I think 😎 I also like Nathan Oak !

smeerf · 20/11/2019 18:44

As a mum to a Nathan/Nate, I am biased, but I'm really glad we went with it. We wanted a name that was obvious how to pronounce/spell (a "proper" name as my nan would have called it) but not too popular, and class neutral. I haven't met any other Nathans. There's an element of coolness to it - it's almost retro, like Victoria Coren-Mitchell calling her daughter Barbara.

And he's just started calling himself Nate (he's not 2 yet) and in his little baby voice it's adorable!

smeerf · 20/11/2019 18:45

Oh, and congratulations!

MissHenty · 20/11/2019 18:45
