Love Winnie and Wilf!

Swisskit · 04/11/2019 23:37

Love Wilfred and Lilian.

RoseMartha · 04/11/2019 23:40

Not keen really.

although I like Lily but not shortened to Lil

Finfintytint · 04/11/2019 23:40

I know a Wilf ,he’s a Willhelm ( in his fifties).
I know a Lilian ( Lil to friends and also in her fifties).
I also know a Winifred ( in her nineties).
Suits them all but Fletcher in my opinion is just a bit shit.

Expressedways · 04/11/2019 23:43

I love Wilfred and Lilian. Lil is awful though, I just think it sounds like a rapper! Lilian really doesn’t need abbreviating but if you’re insistent then I’d go for Lily. I’m on the fence about Winifred and not keen on Fletcher.

Otavis · 04/11/2019 23:44

Lilian is the only one that isn’t absolutely awful.

MrsBertBibby · 04/11/2019 23:50

If you're writing a story set in a care home in the 80s, great.

Otherwise, hell no.

DramaAlpaca · 04/11/2019 23:52

I'm so sorry, but I think all those names are utterly hideous.

With the exception of Lilian, spelled that way, which is OK.

TiceCream · 04/11/2019 23:54

Lilo Lil - red hair and “She Is A Tart!” I guess most people under 40 wouldn’t make that association though.

Wilf is lovely. Fletcher is a bit common.

Astronica · 05/11/2019 00:46

Wilf is a favourite of mine - lovely! Fletcher is okay.

I like Lillian/Lil but not so keen on Winifed/Winnie.

WBWIFE · 05/11/2019 07:43

Thanks all.

Winnie is my favourite as it was my great nans name. I would love my nans name who I was very close to but she was Shirley and I wouldn't call a baby that.

We like longer names, our daughter is Rosanna which we don't shorten but family do.

Really can't find many names we do like..

Pippilangstrumpfi · 05/11/2019 07:44

I like your names, especially Lillian and Fletcher.

But why pre choose possible nicknames? Names don't need to be shortened! And imo Lil, Fletch and Winnie are pretty awful.

Everydaylife · 05/11/2019 07:46

Not my taste at all.

WBWIFE · 05/11/2019 07:47

@07:44Pippilangstrumpfi our families always shorten them. Just how they are. We haven't shortened Rosanna but family do.

Winnie the pooh. Pretenscious first names. Jessica fletcher. Dislike all but lillian

IVflytrap · 05/11/2019 07:47

Not keen. Lillian will end up Lily, like lots of little girls these days. It's a bit generic and plain.

Don't like the shortening Wilf, and Winnie makes of horses. Or The Pooh!

Fletcher isn't too bad but don't like the shortening Fletch. Makes me think of retch or flex.

Did you want suggestions for other names?

IVflytrap · 05/11/2019 07:48
  • makes me think of
WBWIFE · 05/11/2019 07:49

@IVflytrap don't mind really. As long as they are longer names we are open to them. Have looked for 5 months and still cannot decide.

We chose straight away for our daughter.

Really love wilf and Winnie (Winifred ) - classics

Some gums quite like the “freddie” nickname instead of Winnie

I know a couple of auroras that like to be known as Rory

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 05/11/2019 07:56

Sorry but in my opinion Willfred/Will is a nice name but currently being done to death.

Winifred sounds too old lady to me and Winnie reminds me of Winnie-the-pooh.

Fletcher I like a lot, but it's a strong characterful name and a bit American vibe going on with it (which you don't have to care about and which is fine if you're American in any case)

Lillian I like a lot, but will inevitably be reduced to Lilly of which there are tons, but it's such a beautiful name that that can be overlooked.

Fletcher and Lillian overall!

MissHenty · 05/11/2019 08:41

I don’t see how Wilfred is “done to death” it’s number 146 on the name charts and given to 0.055% of babies - pretty minuscule

I’ve not met any Wilfred’s in real life. None at my local baby groups.

Collision · 05/11/2019 08:43

Are you giving birth to an old person?

WBWIFE · 05/11/2019 08:44

@collision yes most likely

Wilfred is tolerable. Dislike the others I'm afraid.
