A bit like I would Eleanor (but with an 'ah' sound at the end instead of the 'or'). I was at school with an Elena who wished her mum had just called her Eleanor, because she hated when people pronounced it Elaine-ah or Eleen-ah.

flowery · 04/11/2019 21:34

My instinct would be to pronounce it the same as Eleanor, however I would worry about being wrong as I would think if that’s what the parents intended, they would have spelled it that way, so I’d probably ask.

catchyjem · 04/11/2019 21:58

Ellen-ah

Lironlavie1 · 04/11/2019 22:07

Thank you, I’m asking as I like the pronunciation as Eleanor but not keen on the spelling.
I’m wondering if Ellena would be read as Ellen-ah rather then Elena that gets read as E-lay-na....

How about the name Elina. I know a little Elina

Pippilangstrumpfi · 04/11/2019 22:49

Elena = Elen-ah

Eleanor = Elen-or

Pippilangstrumpfi · 04/11/2019 22:50

Elaina = Elay-na

Paddingtonthebear · 04/11/2019 22:54

I know one, she is Greek and pronounces it like EL-enHA

DramaAlpaca · 04/11/2019 23:00

I'd pronounce it very similarly to Eleanor.

Lironlavie1 · 05/11/2019 06:31

Thank you! I’d like to hear from more... anyone? 🙌🏼

My Dd is called Helena and her Italian grandmother pronounces it ell-EHN-ah.

Peachbubble · 05/11/2019 07:17

Ellen-ah

LeeMiller · 05/11/2019 07:21

El-EHna or EL-enna I know both, the first is italian. I prefer it with one l though, two looks odd and 'made up' to me.
Elinor is similar and pretty.

Clettercletterthatsbetter · 05/11/2019 07:21

I’d probably guess at el-EN-ah, so like Eleanor, but with the stress on the middle syllable.

If I found out it was pronounced like Rleanor then I’d wonder why the parents had just chosen one of the more common spellings, Eleanor/Elinor.

Elena I would definitely pronounce as El-LAY-nah

ELennuh. The same as Eleanor in my accent.

Pippilangstrumpfi · 05/11/2019 07:46

I'd pronounce Elena and Ellena the same, Ellen-ah.

Eleanor is different, Elean-or.

Pemba · 05/11/2019 16:55

I'd say Ellena the same as Eleanor, but with no 'r' sound on the end. But then most English people don't say the 'r' at the end of Eleanor anyway, as non-rhotic? accent. I think.

If you only had one 'l' - Elena - then I'd pronounce it el-ay-na.

Pippilangstrumpfi · 05/11/2019 18:16

I've never heard Elena pronounced anything other than El en a. Like element, if that makes sense.

On the continent it's pronounced more like El eh na (slightly longer middle syllable) but I've never heard it with an ay sound Confused

diddlediddle · 05/11/2019 22:17

Please just spell it Eleanor! It's a very well known name. It's a beautiful classic name and doesn't need a youneek spelling.

You're right that Elena will rightly be pronounced El Ayy Na, it's a Spanish/Italian name I think.

Ellen is a name. You could choose Ellen.

But not Ellena!

hairyturkey · 05/11/2019 22:21

I would say Ellena as e-lain-a
I think Elena is a better spelling and I would pronounce it the same as Eleanor.

bridgetreilly · 05/11/2019 22:23

Just call her Eleanor or Elena.

LizzieMizzy · 05/11/2019 22:23

The only Elena I know (only one L) is pronounced El-ay-na.

KatherineJaneway · 05/11/2019 22:24

Elle en ah
