I put up my shortlist (Jovie, Lumi and Elvi) before, but now looking for opinions on my longlist (the more background options for us!) considering I've still got 10 weeks left Grin

So, my official long list for my girl was:
Effy
Elva/Elvi
Fable
Hero
Iggy
Jovie
Lennon
Maeva
Percy
Roma
Roxy
Saga
Sage
Story (loved this especially but didn't get one good reaction!)

Some of them are a bit out there (hence why they were ruled off!) but I've really liked every one of these.

What's your opinions on my long list? Grin

I love Story and Jovie.
Love Lennon and Percy but for a boy.
The others are awful, sorry.
I think the name Effy will get a lot of love on here

MissHenty · 16/10/2019 17:00

Effy - love it
Elva/Elvi - nice
Fable - husband laughed in my face when I suggested this one. I understand why now. I think it was my hormones. He was right , it’s not a good name and sounds achingly pretentious and try hard

Hero - nice
Iggy - no way
Jovie - nice but inevitable nickname Jo i don’t like
Lennon - nah
Maeva - made jn Chelsea viewer by any chance? I love her on MiC but her name is too awkward to say. I always think it’s Moira

Percy - cool name for a girl- yes I’d go for it
Roma - no opinion
Roxy - use Roxanna or Roxanne
Saga - eh? No
Sage - no
Story - I think this one might be your hormones. Sorry this is pretentious and ‘try hard’ too (sorry 🙈)

spice3 · 16/10/2019 17:00

@Awwlookatmybabyspider you're the first person (apart from my mum) to like the name Story so I'm happy with that - I love it!!!! Grin

@MissHenty Blush yep, first heard Maeva on MIC a few weeks ago!!!!

OP posts:
Bluerussian · 16/10/2019 17:05

Iggy is short for Ignatius. I've never heard of a girl called that.
Roxy short for Roxanne.
Effy sounds like the F word.

Some of your suggestions are quite weird, op. No offence meant.
What's wrong with more ordinary names? If you called your daughter 'Sarah' or 'Charlotte' she wouldn't be embarrassed by her name at school.

courtlee · 16/10/2019 17:08

I love Roma and Roxy. Love Hero but for me is a boys name! I actually quite like Story too. Love your names list it's nice to see something different.
I would rather be called a lot of those names then boring Sarah and Charlotte....

Newearringsplease · 16/10/2019 17:10

Percy ? For the love of god no

MissHenty · 16/10/2019 17:11

I think Maeva on MiC can pull it off as she’s French so it works that her name is awkward to say. But it’s going to be forever mispronounced and people will get it confused with Maura and Moira. I really wouldn’t use it honestly.

I do think some of these names are taking things a bit too far. That’s just my opinion though. Some are quite pretentious. I love unusual names though and I do really love some from your list.

I really think Roxanna or Roxanne would be greats really unusual but very wearable and excellent nickname potential x

user1493494961 · 16/10/2019 17:11

I think your list is pretty dreadful, Hero and Effy are passable.

MissHenty · 16/10/2019 17:12

@Newearringsplease even my husband likes Percy for a girl and he’s usually the most boring person ever for names! He pretty much only likes names in the top 10 normally! Shocking x

MissHenty · 16/10/2019 17:21

Ps. Please don’t use Saga. It’s a word in everyday use. “Had a total saga at the hospital- they’d lost my blood results”
“Have I told you about the saga I’ve been having with my athletes foot”

Cbeebiesrehab · 16/10/2019 17:40

My daughter is Effie so that’s obviously my favourite.
Elva is nice and I quite like Jovi(e)

Steviestamborine · 16/10/2019 17:42

I like Sage. Not Percy please, I struggled to keep a straight face just reading it which I’m not proud of.

Spied · 16/10/2019 17:43

Roma just makes me think aroma.
Roxy I nice. I'd use Roxanne.
Do not like any of the others.

GetTheSprinkles · 16/10/2019 17:50

Sorry but none are my cup of tea. I think a few are very cute for babies or even pets (and I genuinely dont mean this offensively) but can't imagine an adult with any of those names. However, if you and DP (if involved) love them then go for it! How boring if we all stuck to a list of 'appropriate names' that everyone liked.

AllStarBySmashMouth · 16/10/2019 17:56

Effy - like it, like Effy from Skins
Elva/Elvi - I know an Elva. It suits her. Pretty name, pretty girl.
Fable - No. A bit too out there for me.
Hero - Big no. That's one of those names that creates expectation, like Chastity.
Iggy - Iggy Pop. Getting Iggy with It. No.
Jovie - Different, not sure I'd pick it but I'm not against it.
Lennon - No.
Maeva - I like Maev a lot. Maeva isn't one I've heard but it works.
Percy - ugh, no. I love Percy Jackson as much as the next child of the 90s but no.
Roma - was one of the Hoobs! It's not bad though.
Roxy - always loved it. Prefer Roxie though.
Saga - Nah. Saga has negative connotations. "Did I tell you about the saga at work?" Etc.
Sage - like it
Story - no.

Fable, Saga and Story. I see a theme! I haven't RTFT but I'm trying to think of something else along those lines - just for thought!

Ihateedmundelephant · 16/10/2019 18:04

LOVE Roma! It’s my lovely granny’s name 🥰

AllStarBySmashMouth · 16/10/2019 18:11

Story themed name ideas:

Rune
Cipher
Something using the word "myth"
Lexi - like Lexicon?

MissHenty · 16/10/2019 18:25

Roma is very similar to popular boys name Roman so I would worry it’s ripe for confusion. Roman now a top 50 name and has been leaping up the charts. Will be top 20 soon. So I would bear that in mind that Roma could be in a class with two Roman’s and a Ronan for example

DramaAlpaca · 16/10/2019 23:16

Well, I can usually find at least one name on someone's list that I can say something positive about, but not this time. Sorry, OP, our taste in names isn't remotely similar.

Astronica · 17/10/2019 00:10

I like Elvi (though have only seen it spelt Elvie in the past), Hero, Maeva and Story.
I'd like Iggy as a nickname for, eg, Ingrid. What about Romy, Maeve, Echo?

crustycrab · 17/10/2019 00:22

No. None of these names are for your daughter and her interests. They are so you can be different. Story??? Really?

OddshoesOddsocks · 17/10/2019 00:23

I like most of them!

Effie and jovie were on the shortlist for dd1

Maeve is on the shortlist for this dc should it be a girl but I’ve never heard of Maeva, might have to add it on!

The only one I really don’t like is Roxy but only because the 2 I’ve met weren’t particularly nice!

crustycrab · 17/10/2019 00:24

Fable? Why? Sorry but I'm going to have to suggest something that is actually a name. Like Jessica.

071019DD · 17/10/2019 06:17

I like Effy is addition to Elvie and Roxy (Roxanna). Please don't be put off by people who's personal preference is a Sarah or Jessica though. The world needs its mix Grin I love seeing the differences in names people love/hate. My DS is a total marmite name (Hayden) and not liked on mn at all... my DD seems to get lots of approval (Matilda). DC3 coming today/tomorrow and not decided on final name Smile but we'll love it and with any luck so will bubba!!!
