5 weeks and still no name! Help!

Hi everyone, first time poster here Smile

My baby boy is almost five weeks old and my DH and I still haven’t agreed a name Blush

I like Sebastian but DH isn’t so sure! Other names we have considered are Alexander, Nathaniel and William (I love Nathaniel but only if it’s shortened to Nate). Our surname is one syllable and begins with S if that helps! We like quite classic names but ideally not something that he will share with half of his classmates!

Any suggestions gratefully received! Smile

Alexander is a good name. Alex and Xander are nice ways to shorten it.

Sparklypurpleunicornsaremyfav · 11/10/2019 16:39

I love Nathaniel. How about something along the lines of Nathaniel James both strong classic names.
Congratulations 🎊

Alexander, Nathaniel and William are all lovely, I know lots of Williams so probably opt one of the first two. I really like Nate as nn too.

FrumpyFace · 11/10/2019 16:42

Call him Jonathan. There aren't many around these days.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 11/10/2019 16:53

Oh yes, Jonathan is LOVELY

AverageMummy · 11/10/2019 16:54

Those are all lovely - what does your partner want?

needaname19 · 11/10/2019 17:51

Thanks all! @averagemummy he likes Alexander but I’m not 100%!

I'd avoid Alexander as it will inevitably become Alex and that runs into the S of your surname.

I like the suggestion of Jonathan or how about Quentin or Reuben?

Disfordarkchocolate · 11/10/2019 17:55

James Nathaniel
Matthew Alexander
Alexander is just generally a pretty fine name.
Andrew and David are classic names.

HappyPunky · 11/10/2019 17:57

Sebastian was on my list for a boy but I had a girl. I would've called him Baz or Bash for a nickname
Another one I liked was Theodore so I thought I'd throw it in there.

MollyHuaCha · 11/10/2019 17:59

All lovely names on your list. Just pick one!

MissHenty · 11/10/2019 18:04

You’ve got such a lovely list of names @needaname19 I’m very hesitant to suggest anymore as they’re gorgeous and I’m sure you’ve got “the one” in that list already.

What I would say is that if you’re an indecisive person, the perfect name doesn’t exist. You seem like you’ve given it some thought. I’d just pick one now and try not to dwell

Personally Sebastian is a really cool name. Alexander is my all time favourite boy name.

Other suggestions (but please use yours!) are

Felix (similar to alex)
Rex (similar ish to Alex)
Miles/Milo

Can you try and persuade your hubby on Sebastian ? It will sound so cool with the “S” surname too

OhMyDarling · 11/10/2019 18:06

Don’t like Alexander but like your others.
Nathaniel is my fave! Like the suggestion of Nathaniel James too

Snoopdogsbitch · 11/10/2019 18:10

Personally I think that it's pretty ridiculous that it's 5 weeks! I've never heard of such a thing. I'm sure you need to register by 21 days here in Scotland, but that may have changed.

Naomimi · 11/10/2019 18:12

Love Nathaniel! Nate is a great shortening too.

Benjamin
Theodore
Maximilian
Vincent
Gabriel
Raphael
Elliot
Christian
Alastair
Frederick
Lucian
Augustin

Lovely27 · 11/10/2019 18:18

My vote would be for Nathaniel / Nate for short! Just go for it 👍

071019DD · 11/10/2019 18:18

@Snoopdogsbitch its 6 weeks here and know quite a few that have gone to 6 weeks until making a decision!

MissHenty · 11/10/2019 18:24

@071019DD yes and you can go over that 6 weeks if you keep phoning the department with a reasonable enough excuse why you need to postpone the appt. 🙈

diddlediddle · 11/10/2019 18:36

Alexander is a great choice.

It is a classy and classic name with plenty of nn potential. Go with that.

Nora11 · 11/10/2019 22:48

I like Alexander :) let us know what you decide!

Astronica · 12/10/2019 04:44

All good names on your list. If you use something other than Alex then Alexander would be my first choice - I much prefer Alec, or even Lex as a short form. But all really good names.

Nicholas
Jonathan
Edmund
Edward
Caspar
Henry
Christopher (Kit, Kip)
Patrick
Angus
Alistair
Dominic

Jellycat00 · 12/10/2019 09:49

Congratulations on your little boy!

Jonathan
Jerome
Michael
Micah
Dylan

I love all the names you've mentioned though!

ThighThighOfthigh · 12/10/2019 09:57

We got to the last gasp and were utterly stuck between Max and Leo. Went with Max.

I like Alexander and Felix, they're cool. Don't worry about the x/s we have that too and just put a little pause when reciting full name.

How about Peter?

FizzyGreenWater · 12/10/2019 10:32

Definitely not Alexander with an S surname. He will almost certainly end up as Alex and the two names will run into one another - try saying it out loud before you decide on that one. Also, Alex is nice... but boring. Nathaniel and Sebastian are definitely more interesting.

If your DH is not sure on Sebastian, I'd just go for Nathaniel! It's really nice, Nat/Nate is a good short form, goes with the S surname - nothing not to like really.

FizzyGreenWater · 12/10/2019 10:34

Also other options - I like Jonathan too, not many of those around today, lovely kind name. And I love the short form Jonty.

Barnaby (Barney)
Nicholas (Nico)
Ferdinand (Ferdie)
