Castiel and Gabriel? Cass and Gabe. This might be our compromise after DH conceded only 60% affection for Malchai but warming feelings towards Gabriel.

Cass is not a good nickname option, imo. Gabriel and Malachi are great. You could also consider:
Gabriel and Caspian
Gabriel and Caspar
Gabriel and Sebastian
Gabriel and Michael
Gabriel and Raphael.

Love those together! Cass is an amazing nickname, less keen on Gabriel but love Gabriel.

Not castial, doesn't sound like a name to be honest but I love Gabriel and I like malachi.

My concern is the name endings are spelt the same but pronounced differently.

And whether that will be confusing and I'll end up with a Gay bree el which sounds more feminine as in Gab ree el

Gab-ree-el is the feminine Gay-bree-el
is masculine form. You seem to have it the other way around.
Castiel sounds too try hard and Cass is very feminine and pretty.
Gabriel (Gabe) is fab.

I knew a Cassius called Cass. He was very cool. I prefer Cassius to Castiel.

Not Mal(a)chai, as he'll be called Mal. And that will make people think he's really called Malcolm, which would be most unfair on a baby.

Cassius and Gabriel scans better, imho, different sounds overall, iyswim. I think Cass and Gabe are lovely diminutives... and I don't subscribe to the MN thing that you can't choose a nickname. I did and he's still using it at 15
