I think it's quite popular now. Not out there at all.

TrickyKid · 25/09/2019 22:43

No, not a bit out there but is associated with a certain type of people.

SilverChime · 25/09/2019 22:44

It’s the dog from Paw Patrol! Kids will love it.

Welshe · 25/09/2019 22:54

TrickyKid what do you mean? Hmm

I see more and more pupils with this name. It's not overly used but one in every year group at least. First one I remember was in Neighbours in the 80s!

SavageBeauty73 · 25/09/2019 22:57

I love the name. I wanted it for my second daughter but had a boy!

Aquamarine1029 · 25/09/2019 22:58

Skye is pretty run of the mill now, actually.

TottieandMarchpane · 25/09/2019 22:59

No, it’s lovely.

I think - hope- Tricky meant that it’s got a hippyish vibe. But not too strongly, I think. It also has Scottish connotations, of course.

ParanoidGynodroid · 25/09/2019 23:11

I Think it’s lovely.

KronksSpinachPuffs · 25/09/2019 23:15

I assume the above poster means it's got quite a boho/hippy vibe which I'd agree with.

I know someone who was born in the 90s called this and it seemed unusual then but I wouldn't say its too unusual now :)

AutumnalLeaves38 · 25/09/2019 23:51

Beautiful name:
immediately conjures up the Isle of Skye's landscape.

And sailing (Skye Boat Song).

(and Skye Gyngell, the Aussie chef, who's done pretty well for herself!)

My Scottish relatives tell me it's widespread up there, for obvious reasons.

I know 2 down here (South England): aged 19 and 5.

[Other than the odd 'hilarious' (hmm) wisecrack about satellite tv stations from older people assuming she's called 'Sky', no 'e', the teenager loves her name.
It was pretty unusual whilst she was very young.
Nowadays not so much, and even if it's not their favourite name, I think very few would regard it negatively].

Go for it!

Shadow1234 · 25/09/2019 23:57

Love this name.

Shmithecat2 · 25/09/2019 23:59

I think its dreadful. Certainly not 'out there'. Just a bit chavtastic, and a dogs name imo.

Chocmallows · 26/09/2019 00:01

Depends on surname, e.g. if your surname is a colour she may sound like a paint colour...e.g. Skye White.

TottieandMarchpane · 26/09/2019 00:02

What a nasty post @Shmithecat2

MrsDimmond · 26/09/2019 00:11

I wouldn't describe it as 'out there' as such.

It doesn't have the same feel as other island names such as Islay or Iona. Perhaps because when you hear it you hear "sky" ? I dont know.

Ahundredpercentthatbitch · 26/09/2019 00:11

For me it’s a bit naff.

Shmithecat2 · 26/09/2019 00:12

@TottieandMarchpane

Is your child called Skye?

Grandmi · 26/09/2019 00:14

Definitely not in my top 50 of names...sorry!

Faithtrusts · 26/09/2019 00:15

I think it's a Lovely name... my husky was called Skye, but is just as nice a girls name

TottieandMarchpane · 26/09/2019 00:18

Is your child called Skye?

Nope.

Samosaurus · 26/09/2019 00:32

Deliciously Ella just called her daughter Skye and I don’t think she is particularly ‘chavtastic’!

DramaAlpaca · 26/09/2019 00:36

It's a name I've always liked because I love the Isle of Skye, but I wouldn't have used it because I'd never have got it past DH.

Rachelover60 · 26/09/2019 00:37

- Sky for a boy, Skye for a girl is how I see it. Sky for a boy, Skye for a girl is how I see it.

I googled that. I like Sky/Skye but wonder what would be used as a nickname. I do realise some parents don't like shortened name but it is friendly to shorten; My real name is three letters, one syllable and I so desperately wanted a shortened nickname! Hee hee, I have been called other things but, though mentioned affectionately, were probably not very flattering :-).

Sometimes a surname can be shortened and the person known by that name.

Another name like Sky/Skye is Estella or Estelle; can be nicknamed 'Stella', which I think is lovely and still concerns the sky.

Welshie, 'Skye' is not too commonly used. I think it is a lovely name for a girl (wouldn't be so keen on 'Sky' for a boy). Skye sounds sort of hippy/flower power - ish, in the nicest way.

I came across a boy called, "Blaze" and thought it was a good name.

FurrySlipperBoots · 26/09/2019 00:49

My Border Collie is called Skye! And she's beautiful and perfect, so it has good connotations for me.
