Dh and I are slowly narrowing down the list and this is where we got to so far. We both have a favourite but like all of the below. We want a classic name with a more girly nn. For no particular reason letter L features a lot!

Eleanor nn Elle, Ellie
Evelyn nn Evie
Joan nn Joanie
Leah
Lyra

Love Evelyn. Lyra and Leah are very nice but don't fit your criteria of classic with a nickname?

2girlsandagap · 18/09/2019 14:42

Evelyn is lovely, I loathe the name Leah- there was a child in dds class with that name and she was a nasty little grub of a kid.

PreschoolYes · 18/09/2019 14:43

I like Eleanor, followed by Evelyn.

Grufallosfriends · 18/09/2019 14:44

I like Lyra.

Ellie and Evie are SO overused and dull.

AlphaJura · 18/09/2019 14:45

Not sure if how popular a name is bothers you but I've heard of loads of Evie's/Evelyn's where I live.

Id go with Joan from your list.

Emthebaker · 18/09/2019 14:45

Eleanor and Lyra are the best imo, both so girly and pretty without being too frilly.

17caterpillars1mouse · 18/09/2019 14:55

I love Joan, such a strong underused name

Eleanor is pretty, though I prefer Eleanor but Ellie's are everywhere. I like Norah

Like Evelyn but again Evie's are everywhere

Not a fan of Leah

Lyra is nice but will probably date

daisypond · 18/09/2019 15:04

Eleanor is my favourite but not shortened to Ellie. Ellen? Nora? Nell?
Joan is great.
The others are fine but don’t grab me particularly. Lyra isn’t very classic but I like it.

CampfireZen · 18/09/2019 15:06

Eleanor

MikeUniformMike · 18/09/2019 16:23

Eleanor nn Elle, Ellie - ok but there are so many Elles, Ellies and Ellas
Evelyn nn Evie - dislike Evelyn. Like Evie but there are a lot of similar names popular now.
Joan nn Joanie - like it
Leah - fine
Lyra - no

Astronica · 18/09/2019 16:23

Eleanor is my strong favourite of your list. I lalso like Joan as a bold and strong choice. Leah is nice and a safe choice, though could be a little bland. Lyra is too trendy for my taste, and I'm not keen on Evelyn, my least favourite.

user1493494961 · 18/09/2019 17:33

Only like Eleanor, the rest aren't really classic.

Fivebeanchilli · 18/09/2019 17:36

Eleanor nn Elle, Ellie - love Eleanor, can't bear Ellie. Nell or Elsie are much nicer nn's. And there are millions of Ellies!
Evelyn nn Evie - I like it but so popular
Joan nn Joanie - I like Joanie but I'm not sure about Joan
Leah - I don't like this.
Lyra - lovely

Frith2013 · 18/09/2019 20:02

Eleanor nn Elle, Ellie - dull
Evelyn nn Evie - Waugh, the name writer
Joan nn Joanie - no
Leah - no
Lyra - ok

Frith2013 · 18/09/2019 20:03
  • Waugh - the male writer
AverageMummy · 18/09/2019 20:15

I love Eleanor and Lyra - in that order

Chocolatecake12 · 18/09/2019 22:20

To through a curve ball in
How about Joanne? I know a super cool Joanne and it’s a bit more nicer than Joan imo
Not sure about your other names, nothing stands out - they’re all a bit meh
Other L names that you might like
Libby
Romilly
Millie
Jillian
Sally
Alyssa
Bella
Halle
Callie

DramaAlpaca · 18/09/2019 22:25

I think Joan is a bit dreary, but is fine as a middle name.

The rest on your list are fine.

I quite like Eleanor Joan, which has a nice medieval feel to it, or Evelyn Joan.

Sparklypurpleunicornsaremyfav · 19/09/2019 08:42

We considered leah for our youngest but our surname starts with l so was a bit of a mouthful.
I've always love Evelyn, it was my nans name but eve/Eva are ten a penny now.
Never been a fan of Eleanor but really like Nora and nell/Nellie
Sorry, don't like lyra. How about lila/lyla?

Bessieboo89 · 19/09/2019 09:17

Eleanor definitely

20viona · 19/09/2019 09:23

Lyra. Evelyn is so overused there will be ten others at school.

SomeoneInTheLaaaaaounge · 19/09/2019 09:23

Joan and Joanie are absolutely beautiful!
Evie was nice now you can’t move for them, same for Ellie. Leah is a bit dull.

MissHenty · 19/09/2019 10:08

Joan will get nicknamed Jo no matter how you try and sway ppl to Joanie

I like Eleanor or Everlyn best. Not that common at all round where I live

userabcname · 19/09/2019 10:21

Ellies and Evies are absolutely everywhere so I don't like those two options.
Joanie is quite sweet, has a retro feel which I believe is on trend currently.
I really like Lyra and Leah - I'd go for one of those.

whatausername · 19/09/2019 10:38

Joan/Joanie is best imo
