I love the name Hugo but DH thinks it might seem a bit posh/pretentious. What do you think?

Posh, pretentious, try hard. But if you like it, use it.

@Darlingoscar, I wonder where you live as you find Hugo 'very posh round here' and find Quentin snort worthy ConfusedGrin? I'm genuinely interested!

DarlingOscar · 18/09/2019 13:44

@Pippilangstrumpfi am South East London - we have lots of milos and ollies but no hugos or quentins that I know of......

Sunflowersy · 18/09/2019 14:02

I think Hugo is a lovely name.

We're in Greater London and there are quite a few Hugos as well as Sebastians, Quentins and lots of other unusual and foreign names. No one bats an eyelid! I'm actually surprised at how narrow minded and 'judgmental' some posters are.

Guybrush Threepwood, Mighty Pirate! Grin

I have met one little Hugo, he has red hair and is very cute. Doesn't seem to be many where I live at the moment.

I think of my DS1!

And @ComftyCushion I do drive an SUV, but I don’t shop at Joules (too country middle class) or have multiple holidays. No credit card debt either. Main shops we use are H&M, Poundland, & Aldi. Grin

Great name.

PlatoAteMySnozcumber · 18/09/2019 16:32

While many of the traditionally ‘posher’ names have become more mainstream, Hugo remains pretentious and try hard if you aren’t posh in my opinion. No idea why I think this, it’s just instinctive.

Cattenberg · 18/09/2019 17:05

I’ve always thought of Hugo as being a name for chefs. I’ve only recently worked out why - Hugo the chef in the 80s kids’ programme, Pigeon Street! Great show. Hugo was married to Clara the long-distance lorry-driver and he’d have a hot meal waiting for her when she came home.

Blue7 · 18/09/2019 17:09

I think of Hugo Horton

Me too.

SilverySurfer · 18/09/2019 17:14

Posh, pretentious, try hard.

It may have been seen as posh some years ago but I would never describe it as pretentious and puzzled by try hard.

It's a lovely name and I hope you're not put off by the inverse snobbery on here.

backouch · 18/09/2019 17:15

I love this name. It's one of my favourites.

HappyDinosaur · 18/09/2019 17:17

I think of Vicar of Dibley, but I like it.

Joans3rddaughter · 18/09/2019 17:22

Hugo Boss.

I think of Harry Potter - Hermione's son.

Boss

OhMsBeliever · 18/09/2019 17:34

Hugo reminds me of my neighbours cat. He was a cute cat.

It's not a name I would choose (for a cat or a baby) but it's a perfectly decent name.

Tillygetsit · 18/09/2019 22:57

I think of my gorgeous dog Huey who's only Hugo when he's especially good so not very often.

Duckyneedsaclean · 18/09/2019 22:58
