I love the name Hugo but DH thinks it might seem a bit posh/pretentious. What do you think?

I'm not at all keen on Hugo. Hugh is far nicer, much more down to earth.

peepholepringle · 18/09/2019 23:57

I love it. If we hadn't called our cat Hugo I definitely would be thinking of using it if DC2 turns out to be a boy.

ThatCurlyGirl · 18/09/2019 23:58

To my shame, Made in Chelsea!

putsomethingontheendofit · 19/09/2019 00:07

Hugo-a-go-go out of the cartoon Bat Fink!

I don’t think of it as posh but then I had a family member of that name, he wasn’t British though

Ohyesiam · 19/09/2019 00:10

I think of a man who is posh, affable and a bit dim. Labradors and a Range Rover.

LightDrizzle · 19/09/2019 00:13

The huge role-poly baby one of ExH’s fellow member of Chambers brought to the Chambers summer party. He was enormous. Cute of course, but I felt for his mum as he was huge at birth too. He was called Hugo. His parents were very, very, posh, pink and jolly.

EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard · 19/09/2019 00:14

I think of Hugo Horton from the Vicar of Dibley and the actor Hugo Speer.

LightDrizzle · 19/09/2019 00:17

The roly-poly baby will be 25 now.

Templetonstunafish · 19/09/2019 00:34

Hugo is like that slightly cokey finance guy from the mid nineties. He tries to be fashionable but ends up sloaney. He's posh and not very bright.

AlliKaneErikson · 19/09/2019 00:53

Haha- my naughty new kitten!

Its cool, I know a Hugo and hes a wonderful little boy.

mrgrtt123 · 19/09/2019 01:07

It reminds me of the movie Hugo, the kid who lives in a train station.
Asa Butterfield plays the character. All I know is that Hugo from the movie is a dreamer and he appreciates little things in life.

UndomesticHousewife · 19/09/2019 01:34

It depends on where you live tbh.
Hugo, Rupert and Quentin are posh names, I don't know one person or child with those names and I live in a relatively 'well to do' area.
I know a few Sebastians though.
But Hugo is the best of the bunch.

SofiaAmes · 19/09/2019 01:40

I think of Hugo from Gang of 4. (who's lovely by the way)

devilishlygood · 19/09/2019 04:17

The Hugo I know is just the loveliest guy. Super intelligent, mildly sporty, witty. He is quite posh, but first and foremost, he’s just decent and he’s not audacious or ‘try hard’, he’s very down to earth. Before, I would have been pretty judgey about the name, but it has very positive associations for me.

Monday55 · 19/09/2019 04:36

Hugo Boss

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 19/09/2019 11:45

I think mega posh. Probably went to Eton and is a raving Tory.

aliensprig · 19/09/2019 15:36

I know of two Hugos - one is the French goalkeeper for Tottenham Hotspur (Lloris) and the other is my neighbour's cat.

It's a pretty fun name to chant, if you're that way inclined... "HUUUUUUUGOOOOOOO" (The cat doesn't like it much.)

I quite like it Smile but sadly the football connotations rule it out for our baby!

BoudicasBoudoir · 19/09/2019 19:14

I think it’s a bit try-hard. One of those ‘aspirational’ names where the parents are quite newly middle-class... I prefer something plainer.

CarysRed · 19/09/2019 19:15

There’s nothing wrong with it, but I’m not a huge fan

AlliKaneErikson · 20/09/2019 06:42

aliensprig My cat Hugo is actually names after Hugo Lloris!

Charley50 · 20/09/2019 06:42

I love it.

KatherineJaneway · 20/09/2019 06:43

I think Vicar of Dibley.
