Ds loves his name. Less /no pronunciation of the 'w'..

Cbeebiesrehab · 16/09/2019 17:44

Row-your boat
Then more of an ‘un’ sound

MissHenty · 16/09/2019 17:48

Many little Rowans near me hey called “Row” as in Row your boat

I also know a couple of little Rohan’s (pronounced same). Getting very popular.

Or Rowan’s near me get called RoMan by accident quite a lot as RoMan getting really popular in UK now because of a famous YouTuber and radio personality. On current growth trajectory RoMan will be top 10 in UK soon. A couple of years ago there wouldn’t have been a mix up as both names used to be fairly rare.

  • get not “hey”!

The little Rowan’s near me are often called by their nickname “Row” which sounds same as “Roe”

I know a girl called Rowan and she pronounces the 'row' the way you'd pronounce cow

ShmooBooMoo · 16/09/2019 18:00

Not exactly like I'd say Roan. When I say Rowan there is definitely a w sound, although barely discernible, that isn't there when I say Roan. Roan, to my ear, is one syllable, but Rowan is two...very subtle though.

Littleoakhorn · 16/09/2019 18:04

Row your boat in England, Row to rhyme with cow in Scotland.

museumum · 16/09/2019 18:04

Row rhyming with how now brown cow for a girl.
Row a boat for a boy.

ShmooBooMoo · 16/09/2019 18:08

Like the English person in this link:

ShmooBooMoo · 16/09/2019 18:11

Museumum I've never thought there was a different way of saying it for girls and boys. I actually prefer it for a girl but would pronounce it Rowan (row your boat). Interesting...

Row your boat for both girl and boy.

Iwrotethissongfor · 16/09/2019 18:31

Row as in cow. am Scottish and imagine that most Scottish people would do the same? That’s my natural pronunciation anyway, but I also prefer that sound as Roan sounds unpleasant to me.

finallychangedmyusername · 16/09/2019 19:21

Row your boat

MissHenty · 16/09/2019 19:27

How strange @Mumoftwox !! Never heard it mispronounced in England! Just gets substituted for the wrong name - RoMan or RoNan!! 🤣
I’m sure people will get used to your name and start pronouncing it correctly soon x

polarisation · 16/09/2019 19:38

I'm Scottish and have only recently met girls called Rowan to rhyme with cow. Haven't met any boys named Rowan (I was a teacher).

Out of interest, is a rowan tree pronounced as roe-an in England as well?
