Zara, Safiya...or what else?

Baby girl is due on New Year's Day!

DH's family is Muslim, and we'd like a name that 'works' in Urdu or Arabic, but it doesn't strictly need to be a Muslim name.

Zara is my favourite, and DH likes but doesn't love it. Safiya is a possible alternative.

What do you think? And any alternatives?

Alifiyah (not sure of spelling) is beautiful

AverageMummy · 03/09/2019 09:03

Zara is beautiful and Safiya is nice

UnaOfStormhold · 03/09/2019 09:05

Zahira? Zeina?

MrsRedFly · 03/09/2019 09:08

How about Hana?

saltandvinegar1 · 03/09/2019 09:09

@Peony99 hey
I'm Muslim we named our daughter Zahra she gets called "Zara". Other names Hannah, Jenna, Aisha, Zaina, Ayza

Rosere · 03/09/2019 09:11

Both lovely names. I love Aisha also, but the names you've chosen are fab!

And congratulations!

CampfireZen · 03/09/2019 09:30

Fariah
('friend/companion')

Honeyroar · 03/09/2019 09:31

My friend's child is called Safiya, I'm not keen on it. I much prefer Zara.

CassianAndor · 03/09/2019 09:32

Zahira is a Muslim name I've heard recently which is nice.

Maryam

But Zara is a lovely name that works across the board.

Cindy55 · 03/09/2019 09:33

My Muslim friend named her daughter Inayah and I think it sounds beautiful. Her mother’s name is Fariya which is nice as well.

NoSauce · 03/09/2019 09:36

Amara?

givememarmite · 03/09/2019 09:38

Zara is lovely and I like Safiya too.

Another Urdu/Arabic name I like is Amira.

My girls have Muslim names but Pashtun influence so not sure that would work for your family. On my list I have

Shirin
Afia
Zala
Zakia
Afsana
Nasrin

Good luck!

Divgirl2 · 03/09/2019 09:39

I love Safiya. Zara is nice too.

I work with a Sadia which I've always thought was a gorgeous name.

small2018 · 03/09/2019 09:40

Zara is so overdone! Safiya much nicer!

HarryRug · 03/09/2019 09:42

moonpiggle · 03/09/2019 12:35

Safiya is beautiful.
Zayana
Zanaya
Amara

ChristmasLily · 03/09/2019 12:56

I love Safiya, you could call her Saffi, Saffron, or Fiya/🔥 for short.

drspouse · 03/09/2019 13:01

From my circle, not sure these are all Urdu though they all have some Indian or Pakistani connection:
Zahira
Sofia
Hana
Susana (I discovered that Susan is a boy's name though!)
Aisha

These ones have some Arabic content but African not Asian
Mariam/Mariamu
Zuhura
Zahara
Ashura
Noor/Nur

Peony99 · 03/09/2019 14:41

Asiya, Asya, Assia.

Aya

hifiive · 03/09/2019 14:48

Faiza
Keeya

ShadyLady53 · 03/09/2019 14:55

I like Safiya. Every girl with one Muslim parent that I went to school with was called Zara so I would avoid that to be honest.

Family names of mine (Muslim family) are Tahira, Yasmine, Aisha, Jamila, Nazia, Noor, Miriam, Amalia, Amira, Zaida, Nadia.

Some lovely suggestions on this thread.
