I love the name Effie but is it too similar to my cousins name Etty?? Thoughts all appreciated please

I know two Effies - both mid-twenties. I know at least one of them is actually called Stephanie.

Effie just doesn't look like a real name to me by itself.

Agree with previous poster. It’s not a real name is it? Nickname maybe.

flamingjune123 · 22/08/2019 06:34

I love the name and first heard it from Skins.

Sparklysunflower · 22/08/2019 06:43

Euphemia is sometimes shortened to Effie.

msmith501 · 22/08/2019 06:46

I'm wondering if it's closeness to words like effing (this and effing that) might lead to some unwanted comments as she grows up? No idea obviously but also agree that it only sounds like half a name or a shortened nickname

8by8 · 22/08/2019 06:47

I think it’s short for Elizabeth?

Effie by itself is v similar to etty, but you could use a long name then have Effie as a nickname.

MollyHuaCha · 22/08/2019 07:06

It's a diminutive. Needs a proper name.

AverageMummy · 22/08/2019 07:34

I know one that is short for Josephine

Laura221 · 22/08/2019 07:36

I like it. Its obviously similar but not too bad. My daughter has an effia in her class.

AllTheWhoresOfMalta · 22/08/2019 07:40

Sorry, makes me think of Mrs. Doubtfire as this was the shortening of her name. There’s a very memorable line when she says that her late husbands idea of foreplay was “Effie, brave yourself!”

We’ve got an Esther we call “Essie”- that could work?

AllTheWhoresOfMalta · 22/08/2019 07:40

Brace not brave!

WhatNoNotYouAgain · 22/08/2019 07:42

It's my cousin's name. I don't think it's a problem having on it on its own at all, she's a solicitor and it's never caused her bother.

People are so weird about this on mumsnet. My DH has got a "proper" name that is traditionally shortened (think Mike and Michael) and he always says he wishes the short version was his given name.

Butterfly005 · 22/08/2019 07:43

I like it a lot and think it can be a name in itself

GiveMeGin · 22/08/2019 07:45

Yes

GiveMeGin · 22/08/2019 07:49

Sorry posted that by mistake. I like it, it is quite similar though, perhaps like others have said you could use it as a nickname for a longer name.

Holidaysmoliday · 22/08/2019 07:51

It is a name in its own right and I love it

AlpacaGoodnight · 22/08/2019 07:58

Love it and don't think your cousins name matters. I disagree about needing a long version. So many children hate having to write their formal name on exam papers if it's a name parents thought they should give to use a 'nickname' and I don't personally know any who have gone on to use the longer one in their jobs although I would be interested to see stats on this!

SockMachine · 22/08/2019 08:01

Effie is lovely, as a name in its own right, and I wouldn’t worry about a cousin in a different generation to your baby having a slightly similar name.

Barbarafromblackpool · 22/08/2019 08:03

My Effie is a pet name for Elizabeth.

missmouse101 · 22/08/2019 08:05

I think it's terrible. Sounds as if you are saying effing or F.E.

FishCanFly · 22/08/2019 09:30

Effie Trinket from Hunger Games?

Babdoc · 22/08/2019 09:35

Always make me think of “Euphemia and I...” from the lugubrious Rev. I.M.Jolly! (Riki Fulton at Hogmanay)
My hospital used to have a cleaner called Effie in the doctors’ mess. Euphemia, always shortened to Effie, was quite a common name for babies in Scotland two or three generations ago. I think of it as an old ladies name.

Sparklypurpleunicornsaremyfav · 22/08/2019 09:51

I love the name effie, I think you should go for it

Cbeebiesrehab · 22/08/2019 09:52

My daughter is Effie. She is Evelyn on the birth certificate.
It is similar to your cousins name but I don’t think that’s an issue myself.

AnneKipanki · 22/08/2019 09:54

I thought it was for Euphemia too. Her sister , Euthanasia , is dead funny ..
