Just seeing if anyone has same nickname for William that my sister suggested. Also how popular it is as lists suggest it isn't really common now which surprised me. Thanks x

Of the young Williams I've known in the last few years, most have been William when they're very little and Will as they get a bit bigger and "cooler". One is always Wills to his mum and dad but I'm not sure he himself likes that very much. I think all the young Billies I know are "full name Billy."

MargoLovebutter · 02/08/2019 11:22

I know two and one is Wills and the other is Billy.

Pippilangstrumpfi · 02/08/2019 11:24

Billy or Bill seems to be a stand alone name.

William's tend to be known as William, Willy or Will.

kingsmakersdaughter · 02/08/2019 11:25

Billy

Boom25 · 02/08/2019 11:29

I know 5 Williams age 10-15 and all are known as Will by everyone except their mothers.

zvjezdica · 04/08/2019 20:07

My uncle goes by Wullie, my dad goes by Bill but often says he wishes he'd chosen to go by Liam instead when he was younger as he prefers that as a NN but feels it would be ridiculous to ask people to change now when he's been Bill for over 50 years (in all fairness, it kinda would be)

fudgesmummy · 04/08/2019 21:24

My DS is called William 😍
He was called William by everyone until his early teens when it started being shortened to Will.
He is now 32 and the only people who call him William are his grandparents and his younger sister 😁

twattymctwatterson · 04/08/2019 22:51

Wullie or Liam

Tigger001 · 04/08/2019 23:15

Yes one of my friends sons is William, she doesn't want nicknames so hes William.

Pippilangstrumpfi · 05/08/2019 07:24

Is Wullie pronounced like Woolly as in woolly jumper? Or like Wally?

yellowellies · 05/08/2019 13:06

Over 30 Bill
10 - 25 Will
Under 10 Billy

That’s the ages of the ones I know, not how many of them there are😀

Apolloanddaphne · 05/08/2019 13:26

I am Scottish and can say that in Scotland Wullie is neither pronounced Wooly nor Wally, more Wuh- lay

Goingbacktokansascity · 05/08/2019 16:42

Liam, Will and Billy

Chakano · 05/08/2019 16:45

Yes, as a baby up to one, he will willy.
Primary full title or will.
Secondary his mates called him will, and as an adult he's will.
This one is 28

maddy68 · 05/08/2019 16:49

I'm a teacher and have lots of Williams. They range from Billy bill, will. Wills

tomboytown · 05/08/2019 16:50

I think you can have a William and a Liam, they’re very different names.

AdoreTheBeach · 05/08/2019 16:54

I know a few, various ages and nationalities.
Nicknames of people I know-
Bill
Billy
Wills
Willie
Wim

GinisLife · 05/08/2019 17:01

Will for both the ones I know

Willy Woo by me for one of them (close family)

ODFOx · 05/08/2019 17:02

My DB (mid-40s) was Willy as a child but grew up to be a Bill.

janeyre · 05/08/2019 17:04

I know a few, all Will

Pippilangstrumpfi · 05/08/2019 17:37

I think you can have a William and a Liam, they’re very different names.

Liam is literally part of William!

Pippilangstrumpfi · 05/08/2019 17:38

I'm also surprised how many Willies there are out there Grin

sanityisamyth · 05/08/2019 17:47

I have a William. He's got a nickname (that has nothing to do with his real name and would be very outing!) or he's William. Some of his teachers call him Will, but he tells them his name is William!

tomboytown · 05/08/2019 18:49

Well Pipi, we have a William and a Liam and no- one has ever made that connection.

devilishlygood · 05/08/2019 19:59

@tomboytown, glad to hear this.

My first DC is due in Nov, I have always been very certain that a boy will have William (my dads name, and a strong family name) as middle name. DH’s son is called Liam and although we don’t really see him, I did worry that it would be a bit too close and would weird people out.

I do agree that they are very different names, and sort of surprised that Liam would be considered a diminutive of William.
