Can I have a Magnus and a Fergus?

NC for this as it's very outing!

I have two sons, Magnus and Hamish, I love both of their names. I am now pregnant again and totally stuck for names.

We love Fergus (we are in Scotland btw, in case anyone is sensing a theme!) but can I have a Magnus and a Fergus? They are so similar sounding.

If not - any ideas for boys or girls names that would 'go' with my other two? I know some people hate matching set names but we've sort of gone down that road already!

I'd say yes - the first syllable in both Magnus and Fergus are where the verbal emphasis is put, and have different sounds!

sazzle27 · 19/07/2019 13:37

Plus if you like them then go for it!

TinselTimes · 19/07/2019 13:39

I wouldn’t, they sound really similar to men

How about Fraser or Lochlan?

TinselTimes · 19/07/2019 13:40

*to me

HeronLanyon · 19/07/2019 13:50

I thought I would say no but actually I think it’s fine. They are quite different other than second part of second syllable.

Deadringer · 19/07/2019 13:55

I think they are a bit similar, what about Fergal?

nameshelp · 19/07/2019 14:14

I do like Fraser but DH's boss is called that and he hates him!

Fergal is nice but not 'right' if that makes sense.

I like Lewis and Harris, but Lewises are ten a penny round here and with Harris I have the problem of it sounding like Hamish!

I also need girls names but not Isla, Iona or Eilidh because there are millions of them where we live!

Xander?

Cookit · 19/07/2019 14:43

It’s a weird one. I’ve said them out loud and they sound absolutely fine together and then said them again and they sound too similar... 🤷‍♀️

Luckingfovely · 19/07/2019 14:45

Douglas? Also love Xander

ISmellBabies · 19/07/2019 14:45

Isn't that a bit like having a Zeus and a Colin?

What about Magnus and Maximus?

TeaForTheWin · 19/07/2019 14:49

I prefer Fergul over Fergus...Fergus reminds me of fungus tbh lol.
Hmmm...what about Dougal?
Or Lachclan?

I live in Scotland and I've don't know anyone with any of those names lol.

Girls? Hmm...Elaine (gaelic for ART if I remember right)

nameshelp · 19/07/2019 14:51

Colin?! No I don't think it's as bad as that is it?!

I do like 'Max' but our cat is called that.

Xander is interesting. At first I thought definitely not, but it's a grower I think.

They're too similar and also Fergus is such an unattractive name.

PineappleSeahorse · 19/07/2019 15:03

Struan?

PineappleSeahorse · 19/07/2019 15:06

I met a boy called Muir recently. I'd never have considered it but it really suited him. Of course it depends upon your surname.

TakeAChanseyOnMe · 19/07/2019 15:07

Cameron
Fraser
Callum
Logan

For girls: (avoiding Isla as that’s what all baby girls seem to be called!)

Rhona
Eilidh
Catriona
Mhairi

TakeAChanseyOnMe · 19/07/2019 15:10

Missed that you know lots of Eilidhs!

Is Alisa still popular? Cara? I’m Irish and it means “friend” so assume it’s similar in Gaelic.

nameshelp · 19/07/2019 15:13

I love Cameron but DH does not. DH loves Struan but I do not.

I like Ailsa!

All the Douglas/Dougal's that we know (and surprisingly there are a few) end up as Dougie which I hate.

What about Felix? It's not scottish but I like it.

I see no problem with Magnus, Hamish and Fergus.
Great names!
I love Duncan too.

PineappleSeahorse · 19/07/2019 15:22

Felix is lovely. Much nicer than Fergus.

TeaForTheWin · 19/07/2019 15:23

Oh gosh not felix, everyone will meow after him in the playground lol.

Ps: did you get Magnus from the shadowhunters series?

Carolwithane · 19/07/2019 15:24

I have a wee Robbie, he is awesome Smile

nameshelp · 19/07/2019 15:29

Magnus was a family name and I just loved Hamish.

Duncan was my first choice but DH vetoed it!
