I would not agree with there being less bullying now, if anything there is a lot more and many more platforms for it to take place on.

Panicmode1 · 15/07/2019 13:22

There is a Balthazar living near me, who is one of 4, whose siblings also have the most ridiculously pretentious names. And I live in a place where my children have a lot of Montys, Ruperts, Sebastians, Jaspers etc in their classes.... I'm afraid a lot of people judge, and not kindly.

What is 'pretentious' actually supposed to mean?

Have you considered that they may actually like their names? That his parents may not be 'pretending' anything?

Kanga83 · 15/07/2019 14:37

@Panicmode1 what on earth is pretentious about Monty, Sebastian, Rupert, Jasper etc. Normal, classic names that will take a child into adulthood nicely. Judge away.

SleepingStandingUp · 15/07/2019 14:44

@MumdayMania Malachi was in my list for DS1but everyone's negativity ruined it. I adore it tho.

@WhatNowDear this borders on abuse well good look reporting me to SS fro picking a name you don't like. this "cute" and "original" name is going to negatively impact the poor child's entire life but it isn't original, it's literally in the bible. I mean, for providence what more do you want? It's hardly Questizabelle and Fingustina is it??? Get over yourselves get over what exactly? Liking old biblical names? The horror, I must be such a terrible person.

@Kanga83 I suspect your live somewhere posher than me. I think I was meant to be posher than I've turned out lol, those names are awesome. I adore Persephone but I worry about people pronouncing it right.

SleepingStandingUp · 15/07/2019 14:49

You'll be pleased to know my girl names are far more sensible.
Arabella, Ariella, Arianna etc.

Is it Balthazar one of the 3 kings? Poor kid won't be fun for him.

BlueJag · 15/07/2019 15:04

Saint Balthazar; also called Balthasar, Balthassar, and Bithisarea,[1] was according to tradition one of the biblical Magi along with Caspar and Melchior who visited the infant Jesus after he was born. Balthazar is traditionally referred to as the King of Arabia and gave the gift of myrrh to Jesus. In the Roman Catholic Church, he is regarded as a saint.
You can name the other Caspar and if you have a third son Melchior.
I'm not being horrible just pointing out what's on the horizon.

Panicmode1 · 15/07/2019 15:08

@kanga83 Nothing. They are all lovely names and relatively common in the very nice part of the world in which I live. So by calling your child Balthazar (and the siblings names which are equally 'try hard'), it makes you look rather pretentious - and there have been lots of conversations around the tables of the ladies that lunch here, which haven't always been very kind about the choices. If they were going to private school then maybe it wouldn't matter, but they are in state schools. Even at the (public) schools my brother and I went to, Balthazar and Thaddeus would have been sniggered at.

Alarae · 15/07/2019 15:13

I can just get over Thaddeus, but not Balthazar. You are just asking for teachers to name him a little demon!

Can't even get a good nickname for that either. Such a heavy name to bear.

SleepingStandingUp · 15/07/2019 15:28

@Panicmode1 I think I'd rather be thiught pretentious than be the sort of woman who sits around bitching over. Lunch about children's names. If one of us needs to get over ourselves, it's not me. You'd think they'd muster enough class to find something else to talk about.

Dear god no. Cassius and Atticus are much better. Go with those.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 15/07/2019 15:30

I agree sleeping

Luckily my friends don’t sit around criticising childrens names

Grufallosfriends · 15/07/2019 15:40

I think I'd rather be thought* pretentious than be the sort of woman who sits around bitching over* lunch about children's names.

I agree

Nesssie · 15/07/2019 15:46

Horrible names. Imagine being a teenage boy and being called Balthazar.
You are being selfish, thinking of yourself and not your poor child who will have to live with that ridiculous name.

Lavenderblues · 15/07/2019 15:48

there have been lots of conversations around the tables of the ladies that lunch here, which haven't always been very kind about the choices

Wow, you seem to have lovely friends Hmm

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 15/07/2019 15:48

Wow

I’d heard the baby names board was a bear pit

I thought ...how bad can it be

Nesssie · 15/07/2019 15:50

@Rufusthebewilderedreindeer You don't think the OP posted these names to cause a reaction? Please.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 15/07/2019 15:53

No I don’t

I like the names

And if I didn’t i would either not comment at all or just say

I really dont like those names

Not ‘oh my god you are ruining thats childs life ‘ which ive seen on here

I think you can have an opinion without being mean...but i know this is mumsnet Grin

Panicmode1 · 15/07/2019 15:54

Oh the irony of posting on a forum asking for opinions about children's names, and then sagging off those who do so in real life. Hmm

Lavenderblues · 15/07/2019 15:58

Panicmode, there's a difference between asking about opinions for potential babies and bitching about actual children's names!

Lavenderblues · 15/07/2019 15:58

Sorry potential baby names
