DH and I love the name Roy. We really want to use it for our son and have been settled on this name since 17 weeks when we found out the sex. We have even bought a few personalized things.

But we have had nothing but really horrid remarks from 2 family members which is really getting us down and making us wonder if it really is such an awful name? The rest of our family and friends appear to like it (some even love it) but we are now questioning if they are maybe just agreeing with us because that is the polite thing to do?

(and yes I guess this is why it is best to wait until the baby has been born before naming?)

Roy
Short for Royston (Liv Tyler’s gorgeous ex is named Royston).

RoysMum · 19/06/2019 17:38

Does seem pretty split over here though, done a quick tally and its approx 50:50 split but majority are all saying just go ahead and use Roy anyway?

DS' name is Vincent nn Vin so they would be a Vin and Roy. We did float Royston but it just does nothing for us, but Roy we really like. And both names come from favorite fictional characters, which might be why "old man" isnt conjured with either name for us.

I think Vincent and Roy work well together.

Howtotrainyourhamster · 19/06/2019 18:05

You might just be way ahead of the curve op - I bet anyone naming a Stanley 20 years ago would have got the same kind of comments...

If you like Roy I guess that’s what matters. I agree though that there just doesn’t seem to be much to it and the connotations are generally not great. Ralph (and Ranulph maybe) is similar but with a bit more substance and appeal (though I get you are not specifically looking for alternative suggestions).

Your username also suggests you’re pretty committed...

diddlediddle · 19/06/2019 18:47

Oh god, don't have Royston - just makes me think of Royston Vasey from the League of Gentlemen! 😱

Nothing wrong with the name Roy. Perfectly fine.

Seems like you're pretty set on it irrespective of everyone's opinions, which is quite right. Are you sure you didn't create this thread just for kicks though?!

AudacityOfHope · 19/06/2019 18:59

Vincent is pretty cool though. Roy - I'm not sure it was ever cool. They feel quite different to me.

AverageMummy · 19/06/2019 20:16

Vintage names are the ones associated with 80+ year olds & so coming round in fashion.
Roy is not an old man / vintage name at all - it’s a 50 year old’s name. It’s more like Colin or Shirley.

That said - his generation won’t hear it that way & he’ll be in a generation full of extremely diverse names. Gone are the days where almost all kids had a top ten name & now there are thousands of names used a year. Can’t see why any child would tease a Roy or he’d hate it. If you’re worried, just stick something like Roland on the birth certificate

EdWinchester · 19/06/2019 20:18

Roy is just awful. Like Dennis or Colin.

Poor child.

MikeUniformMike · 19/06/2019 20:21

I like Dennis too. Colin is not quite ready for a reappearance.

ooooohbetty · 19/06/2019 20:23

Vin and Roy sound great together for brothers. I like both of them.

BarryBarryTaylor · 19/06/2019 20:25

If you and your partner like it, go for it!!

I can see it slowly increasing in popularity just like Vincent, Fred and Frank have. It’s a solid name.

SherlocksDeerstalker · 19/06/2019 20:29

I dated a Colin at uni. I literally couldn’t believe anyone aged 19 could possibly be called Colin, and there were two on my floor in halls Grin

whizzpopbangalang · 19/06/2019 20:31

Could you have Rory with nn Roy? Roy to me is a 50 year old car dealer.... but when I think about it, there is nothing wrong with the name just from a different generation that is not trendy yet!

ppwonar · 19/06/2019 20:36

Roy is a short form of Roderick, if that helps...maybe it doesn't! I like Roderick but haven't heard of anyone "young" with the name since I was at playgroup. I'm in my 30s.

WhiteDust · 19/06/2019 20:45

I forgot about Roy Chubby Brown ConfusedConfusedConfusedConfusedConfused

WhiteDust · 19/06/2019 20:52

I was going to post a link but I doubt anything with him in it will get past MN moderators. Revolting man.

diddlediddle · 19/06/2019 21:00

Roderick is actually quite cool and goes well with Vincent. Then they'd both have a longer name and a nn

Icantreachthepretzels · 19/06/2019 21:04

Roy is better than Royston - please don't call him Royston. Roy is fine - it will look cute on a baby but isn't a 'cute' name that will look ridiculous when he's older. I also prefer Roy to Ray. I prefer Rory to both - but if you don't you don't.

As for whoever told you Roy would never forgive you for giving him a shit name when his brother got a decent one - I can hand on heart tell you I'd rather be a Roy than a Vincent. Not that there's anything wrong with the name Vincent, not even that I don't like it - I just prefer Roy. The (rude) person who told you that has the opposite preference to me - that doesn't mean it will be how your son feels, as clearly different people have different preferences.

I also think Roy is considerably better than Arnold. I'd rather be a Vincent, a Roy, a Desmond, a Clive or just an 'oi you' before I was an Arnold. The only good thing about that name is that it made me go and watch the Rimmer song on youtube.

If you love Roy call him Roy.

blankittyblank · 19/06/2019 21:14

I haven't thought about this name in years, but now I've heard it again, I love it!! Honestly, I think it's great! I bet it'll be trendy in about 5 years time too Smile

Mesmeri · 19/06/2019 21:24

I like Roy very much.

I find it funny that the main objection seems to be that it's dated... however Harry, Henry, George, Oliver etc (names which, personally, I'm not keen on) which would have had the same reaction 30 years ago are now very much under 25s names. Stanley, Alfred, Archie and Wilf are all over pre-schhoolool. Keith and Trevor will be back again soon and in another 40 years it'll be time for Mark and Steven again.

Go with the name you like.

Kokeshi123 · 20/06/2019 00:44

Royston NOOO! Royston Vasey and Roister-doister.... it's not a good sound.

Roy is fine, nice simple sound. I can guarantee that it will be "in" a decade or so from now. Not so long ago people would have been "huh?" about Arther or Archie.

I’m glad I read to the end of the thread to see you confirm your elder DS is called Vincent, from your opening post I was thinking “I’m sure this is the poster with a son called Vincent”!

Honestly, no I personally don’t like Roy and wouldn’t use it. However it does work very well with Vincent. So, from your perspective, I would use the name.

DickZillaofTheVilla · 20/06/2019 01:27

I work with a Roy in his 30s

AmyMaria2 · 20/06/2019 03:00

You're going to call your baby Roy? Please no

Lobsterquadrille2 · 20/06/2019 08:02

Great name. I think it's a mistake asking people what their opinion is. I loved Cordelia and had so many negative comments that I saved it for the cat. Vin and Roy work wonderfully.

I have a friend with Albert and Stanley. Lovely too.

Congratulations OP!
