DH and I love the name Roy. We really want to use it for our son and have been settled on this name since 17 weeks when we found out the sex. We have even bought a few personalized things.

But we have had nothing but really horrid remarks from 2 family members which is really getting us down and making us wonder if it really is such an awful name? The rest of our family and friends appear to like it (some even love it) but we are now questioning if they are maybe just agreeing with us because that is the polite thing to do?

(and yes I guess this is why it is best to wait until the baby has been born before naming?)

It’s not my cup of tea but I don’t think it’s a horrible name. I know two Roy’s, one in his 20’s and one in his 30’s and they’re both great and suit their name. What about Rory, would that work?

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 19/06/2019 10:57

I know a baby Royston. He's lush

Jacksmadre · 19/06/2019 10:59

I quite like it

NameChange30 · 19/06/2019 11:03

I much prefer Ray. But if you and your husband love it, you should go for it despite what others think. It sounds as if you've decided anyway! Although I would always wait until baby is born before confirming the name.

DennisSkinnersMolotov · 19/06/2019 11:07

If you like it then use it!
This is precisely why I've answered "have you thought of any names yet?" with "yes, we have a very short list, thanks" And leave the conversation there.

mawof3soontobe · 19/06/2019 11:13

It's a huge no from me sorry. It reminds me of the meme that circulates that goes along the lines of "who looks at a baby and decides to call it Keith? Kids just born and he's already a 50 year old taxi driver with a west ham tattoo" Blush sorry that's very blunt but some names just have that effect

EmmaC78 · 19/06/2019 11:13

I am not keen. Too old fashioned.

Peachy8 · 19/06/2019 11:13

I like it. Roy Cropper on Coronation Street was a real sweetheart.

Pinkmouse6 · 19/06/2019 11:14

Sorry, it’s really awful Grin.

Roy
Dinosauratemydaffodils · 19/06/2019 11:16

It's my 4 year old's middle name and I must admit whilst I'm happy it's in his name for family/sentimental reasons, there is no way I would have given it him as a first name.

Millypolly90 · 19/06/2019 11:17

I really really don’t like it and I can’t shake the association of Roy Cropper! But, go for it if you love it! Your family have been so rude about it and that would make me want to use it even more if I were you

ReturnofSaturn · 19/06/2019 11:19

Cropper. Sorry.

RoysMum · 19/06/2019 11:20

Part of me is like that too Millypolly - I really do not want to be seen to give in to such horrible comments because I think they enjoy trying to control our decisions (they have form of previously trying to dictate...) BUT I cant shake off how Roy might grow up resenting us giving him that name...

Then again, he could grow into it and own the name?

OP posts:
RoysMum · 19/06/2019 11:20

Literally have no idea who Roy Cropper is...

There's a Roy in The Archers with a sister called Brenda. He's supposed to be around 40, I think. Unusual names for their generation but I've got used to them. Use it if you love it. Your relatives' reaction says more about them than you.

Millypolly90 · 19/06/2019 11:37

Are there any other names you like?

ItWentInMyEye · 19/06/2019 11:39

Sorry but I don't like it. There must be another name you like?

FloatingthroughSpace · 19/06/2019 11:46

There is a dreadful kids program called Roy where Roy is a cartoon adopted by a "normal" Northern Irish family and the title sequence is basically people yelling "ROOYYY!" - I worry that would follow him...

RoysMum · 19/06/2019 11:48

There are loads of names I like but this was the only name DH and I agreed on... Well actually we liked Arnold too with nn Arnie but these 2 family members totally put us off that one...

GMtoBe · 19/06/2019 11:56

It's my Grandpa's name and I love it. Definitely due to be fashionable soon

BarryBarryTaylor · 19/06/2019 11:58

I really like Roy, I do prefer Ray, but DH suggested Roy and we were nearly going to use it except it’s the name of his grandad and we thought it may upset my grandad (they are pals)

RoysMum · 19/06/2019 11:59

what about if it was slightly lengthened to Royde (is that still shit for those who dont like Roy?)

OP posts:
Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 19/06/2019 12:03

Royde would make me think of steroids or haemorrhoids. Royce?

Howtotrainyourhamster · 19/06/2019 12:06

Arnold/ Arnie is much nicer than Roy!

Sorry, Roy is Cropper and corduroy. Middle aged man with a comb over and a sandwich in a brown paper bag.

Jacksmadre · 19/06/2019 12:09

I prefer Arnold though, it’s lovely
