DH and I love the name Roy. We really want to use it for our son and have been settled on this name since 17 weeks when we found out the sex. We have even bought a few personalized things.

But we have had nothing but really horrid remarks from 2 family members which is really getting us down and making us wonder if it really is such an awful name? The rest of our family and friends appear to like it (some even love it) but we are now questioning if they are maybe just agreeing with us because that is the polite thing to do?

(and yes I guess this is why it is best to wait until the baby has been born before naming?)

hahaha that is such a good point Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g !! Hadn't thought it through properly, just saw it on a name website under "names beginning with Roy"

But he wont be that though will he, Howtotrainyourhamster , he will be our little baby Roy who will develop his own personality.

Interestingly, it actually isnt the old man aspect that these 2 family members have mainly being horrid about but rather the sort of job that they imagine a Roy to do... (FYI, totally hate and disagree with what they think about the jobs they mentioned and dont exactly think one can comment on jobs considering he isnt employed...)

I do also prefer Arnold but DH has totally been turned off it by these 2 already... which is why I am so upset that they are doing it again.

Their suggestion has been Edward but I so do not want to choose a name that they have suggested now.

I personally don’t like it op. Why don’t you stick another R in it? Rory? Now that’s a great name!

NameChange30 · 19/06/2019 12:17

Why on earth are you still discussing names with these people when they already ruined Arnold for you?! (I prefer Arnold to Roy FWIW.)

Birdie6 · 19/06/2019 12:26

I love it - very strong and manly. Yes it's old-fashioned but all the old names are coming around again.

daisypond · 19/06/2019 12:27

I thought of the cartoon boy Roy in the CBBC series first, and he’s a child. It does have a bit of an old vibe but not quite in the way that’s fashionable now. No doubt it’s time will come. How about Fitzroy?

RoysMum · 19/06/2019 12:28

Really do not like the name Rory at all, makes me think of those annoying kid characters you get at holiday kids clubs... but then this is all personal preference isnt it.

and I know, we shouldnt be discussing names at all with them after the whole issue with Arnold. But tbh I didnt think it would be open to discussion because when we announced we were having a boy we announced his name too, as tough it is set in stone (or rather fabric and wood with the personalised stuff...)

My son is called Rory and my grandmother misheard when she was told his name and thought it was Roy. I think it could be quite cool actually.

mimibunz · 19/06/2019 12:30

I think it’s retro cool. Like Gene.

Wallabyone · 19/06/2019 12:30

It wouldn't be my choice, but I don't think it's too outlandish. I have a slight preference for Ray, not sure why. I've met some very traditionally named babies recently, including Ronnie and Alan, so he won't be on his own in having this type of name.

NameChangeNugget · 19/06/2019 12:33

I think it’s a great name

At least he won’t be the seventh Leo, Jacob or Noah in his class

nothingtowearever · 19/06/2019 12:35

Roy is actually quite cute! Certainly better than some awful names out there at the moment!

PassMeTheWine · 19/06/2019 12:36

Too old a name for a baby,
Reminds me of Roy Cropper.

AllTheWhoresOfMalta · 19/06/2019 12:36

Kids just born and he's already a 50 year old taxi driver with a west ham tattoo

This could be about my uncle Roy. Except he’s more 60 and has a Spurs tattoo 🤷🏼‍♀️

It’s not a name that needs bringing back I don’t think OP, sorry.

Deafdonkey · 19/06/2019 12:38

Love it, my eldest is Maude and back in mid 90s everyone said what a horrid middle age name/granny name. Now I know a few under 5s called Maude, Dotty, Sidney etc.
I love it, it's different but not made up or weird, he won't be one of a hundred Harrys/ava/grace /Oliver's but also won't be one of the stormy/nevaeh/cayden/jaidens

Howtotrainyourhamster · 19/06/2019 12:38

Yes, point taken sorry, I guess once he’s here and a cute baby/ cool child with the name he can make it his own - though that’s something that applies to all names and doesn’t stop people seeking opinions on here!
Also agree you should stop discussing names with these people!
Arnold reminds me of Arnold Wolf from Charlie and Lola, who is very cute.

RoysMum · 19/06/2019 12:42

Yeah totally agree Howtotrainyourhamster which is why I am so conflicted, everyone has their own preference about names but as social creatures we cant seem to stop seeking approval - as I am doing here right? Just messes with my head so much!

Also, does anyone really judge an adult's name? I cant think of a time I have ever judged someone's name when meeting them as an adult.

Sorry, Roy is Cropper and corduroy. Middle aged man with a comb over and a sandwich in a brown paper bag.

Grin Grin Grin

Quintella · 19/06/2019 12:59

Roy is a sad little name. Dull and unremarkable. But if it’s the name you both love it’s the name you both love. It’s not like you're saddling him with a truly objectionable name, like Adolf. Tell your relatives to get over it.

Clownfish123 · 19/06/2019 13:00

I don't think people tend to judge an adults name as long as it sounds like a proper name. I might have preconceived expectations of a 'Rainbow' or something misspelled, but Roy is fine.
It is very old man though and he might not thank you as a teen. Having said that maybe Roy will have a resurgence and he will be ahead of the curve!
Go for it if you both really like it.

RoysMum · 19/06/2019 13:04

Quintella That sounds similar to one of the comments we revived from these 2 relatives, which is something I find funny as one of them named her 2 sons with short names and mine is also a short name - I'd probably liken them all to each other actually.

It's all so subjective. I really like Ray but Roy just doesn't do it for me, even thought they're very similar and of the same era.

FlyMayBe · 19/06/2019 13:07

It's a lovely name OP. Simple, honest, unpretentious.

Annoying the relatives is a massive bonus IMO Grin

Kokeshi123 · 19/06/2019 13:12

I like it!
