DH and I love the name Roy. We really want to use it for our son and have been settled on this name since 17 weeks when we found out the sex. We have even bought a few personalized things.

But we have had nothing but really horrid remarks from 2 family members which is really getting us down and making us wonder if it really is such an awful name? The rest of our family and friends appear to like it (some even love it) but we are now questioning if they are maybe just agreeing with us because that is the polite thing to do?

(and yes I guess this is why it is best to wait until the baby has been born before naming?)

I like it. Short and sweet.
I know several Roys and they are all lovely.
So thumbs up from me

Ellapaella · 19/06/2019 13:19

Rory yes, Roy no.

GrapefruitIsGross · 19/06/2019 13:23

Ill be blunt since you asked for an opinion- it’s dreadful. Up there with Norman and Gary, I doubt it’ll come back into fashion in the same way that names like Stanley and Alfie have.

But I totally see where you’re coming from when you say that you don’t want your two family members having any influence on the name you chose. Regardless of what you decide, you need to tell them that you’re not talking about names with them anymore until baby is here and you’re making the announcement.

For anyone haunted by the photo of Roy Cropper, here is another Roy. No cordu-Roy, aprons or barms in sight.

Roy Orbison is cool. I was racking my brains for a cool Roy and all I could think of was Roy of the Rovers.

notso · 19/06/2019 13:42

I wanted Leroy but DH vetoed it Sad I still love it.

I don't think there's any way of knowing what a child will think of their name. I have a family member with what I think is a lovely classic name but they've changed it after hating it for over 60 years.

DontCallMeShitley · 19/06/2019 13:47

It was good enough for Roy Woods too.

And a few footballers etc.

It would also depend on his surname. I prefer it to Jayden, Alfie, Reggie etc. All the Roys I ever met were decent people.

MikeUniformMike · 19/06/2019 13:50

I like it and I like Royston.
Ray is great too.

WhiteDust · 19/06/2019 13:53

Roy/Rory/Ron

I'd go for it. If Agnes, Maude and Elsie have made a comeback I don't see why not.
There are plenty of Alberts and Stanleys around too.

HairyToity · 19/06/2019 13:53

I like the name Roy.

Bentley111 · 19/06/2019 13:56

Thought so - can't believe you're almost ready to pop! Honestly stick with it, you'll regret it if you don't. It's due a comeback.

Also like @Quintella's suggestion of Ray if you really can't hack it.

Ravingstarfish · 19/06/2019 13:58

I don’t like it because it sounds like ‘oi’ although that could be my accent. When I tell ds no it sounds like Noah so I joke I should have called him that.
Most people do grow into their names and a few years ago Lily was an old lady but is now a young name.

LorelaiRoryEmily · 19/06/2019 13:59

@RoysMum it absolutely is all personal taste. If you love it then go for it. I really do think it’s a dreadful name personally. There’s something miserable sounding about it to me. BUT little baby Roy? He’ll be cute and you might just get away with it

Watercoloursky · 19/06/2019 14:02

I like it - it was my (Canadian) grandfather's name, I think short for Royston. If I'd been a boy, that's what my parents would have named me... I'm early 30s now, so not all that old!

ooooohbetty · 19/06/2019 14:05

Haven't heard it for years but I like it. Good solid name. He's not going to have to spell it out every time he says it to someone. It's no more dated than Stanley or Archie. Go for it if you like it.

Fullmoons · 19/06/2019 14:08

I like it. Good strong name that's easy to spell and pronounce. It makes a refreshing change from all the cutesy Alfies and Archies!

Fullmoons · 19/06/2019 14:09

Roy is so much easier to say than Rory! What a difference one letter makes.

Zapata29 · 19/06/2019 14:11

Personally I really don't like Roy BUT in your post you mentioned both you and DH love the name so that's what matters isn't it? And a lot of old-fashioned names are becoming more popular now. My parents initially hated our baby name (similar to Arthur) as they thought it was an old man name (so did I tbh) but it grew on them and once DS was here nobody can imagine him being called anything else as it really suits him Smile

I do prefer Ray though, sounds cooler...

PartridgeJoan · 19/06/2019 14:13

Your baby your choice. Everyone else should be quiet x

AudacityOfHope · 19/06/2019 14:18

Jesus, Roy?? Honestly that's the nicest boys name you could agree on?

I'm sorry but it's absolutely awful. No redeeming features in Roy as a name at all.

Saharafordessert · 19/06/2019 14:20

There are definitely nicer names out there but if you both love it then go for it.....just be prepared for some negativity tho.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 19/06/2019 14:21

I grew up next door to a very nice boy called Roy, so I like the name. I also work with a 27 year old Roy, but his full name is Royal.

WhereForArtThouBray · 19/06/2019 14:39

My Baf is called Roy and he hates it, really hates it, he is mid 30s.

He also gets called Rob quite often too, people can't seem to accept he is called Roy.

AudacityOfHope · 19/06/2019 14:50

To the people who say if the parents love it that's all that matters - do you really think that?

Even if it's a name that 99% of the people the kid will meet in his life will think his name is awful? Or if they wanted to name him, I dunno, Donald Trump Junior Junior. It doesn't really hold up for me as a very logical stance to take.

wendywoopywoo222 · 19/06/2019 14:51

I love it. I called my first dog Roy as I knew I wasn't going to have kids.
