Mary - really torn on this name. Thoughts?

I think it’s sweet, but a little bit boring (which is not necessarily a problem). My daughter is Meredith, her dad calls her Merry quite often and I always mis-hear it as Mary!

I think it feels fresh and lovely now as it's rarely used these days. I also see it like the classic names of Anna and Jane. It would not seem religious to me if siblings had names like Anna and Jane. I know of one young Mary and her sisters are Lucy and Tessa - doesn't seem religious.

I love it but I had a Joseph already.

Mary was my dh GM name she was a lovely lady who gave bear hugs. So I think of it was a lovely name and it’s due a come back.

It's my Grandma's name and it's on my list for potential next daughter. I think it's classic and lovely.

I associate it very strongly with Catholicism. Which could be a pro or con depending on your religious beliefs I suppose!

What about Mari if you are worried about Catholic association?

I think that's really pretty and a bit more modern

I think the name itself is actually lovely but I do still associate it with older women and it feels very religious. I know so many Irish Catholic Mary's over 50!
In this country though I think it is definitely usable on a little one. It would actually feel quite fresh.

I would prefer Maria, Mabel, Maggie, maybe because Mary is my mums middle name and she is 70!

Martha is also used more now but I'm not sure I like it!

I would use Mary as a middle name. I just didn't as I had others I preferred or went better with the first name.

Slang for fanny. And a bit meh.

Like Mari though. Marisol, Marissa.

Hmm thank you everyone. I think I may use it as a middle name as I do like simple classics but I’m not keen on the religious connotations.

I thought you were going to use Torn as a name. Mary is lovely, would have used it for DC1 but family's regional accent would have said it as Merry.

I'm not keen on it as a single name, but it does go quite well as a hyphenated name, eg Mary-Jane, Mary-Lou, Mary-Rose, Mary-Kate.

I think it’s really sweet and unusual for a little girl now, nicer than Maria and Marie (which I find a bit harsh) but fits in well with similar sounding names like Maisie. I would class it in the same category as Anna, timeless and pretty.

Please don't hyphenate it.

Mary is a lovely name. I think simpler classical names are going to stand out a lot more in this age group as people are going for unique or old fashioned but long so lots of people are choosing the same names and overlooking the simpler ones

I wanted it but had a Joseph so not a great idea! It's pretty. I think I slightly prefer Marianne. I was at school with a girl called Mary. Gine until we read Hairy McLarey from Donaldsons dairy!

Lovely name, so unusual nowadays and won’t have the connotations of many little old ladies for the younger generation.

Mara is a bit more up to date if you like Mary....

I'm an Irish person with Mary as her middle name. Every girl I grew up with had Mary as her middle name. We went to convent schools with Mary in the title, and there was a lot of chat about Our Lady, Mary, the mother of God. Impossible for me to see this name beyond the prism of Catholicism. Maybe in the flesh pots of secular England it will sound very fresh and cool
