Mary - really torn on this name. Thoughts?

Don't like it. Prefer Maria but not very keen on that either!

Spookydot · 14/06/2019 23:41

I really like it. Classic, not overused and pretty.

bridgetreilly · 14/06/2019 23:42

Lovely.

Ploppymoodypants · 14/06/2019 23:44

I like it

tigertiger10 · 14/06/2019 23:47

Oh phew I thought the chosen name was “Torn”.

Mary is lovely.

Casmama · 14/06/2019 23:47

It was my grandmothers name and my MILs name so seems very old fashioned to me but then so do many other names used now.
It does sound quite pretty - fairly religious connotations though so I don't know if that matters?

TrixieFranklin · 14/06/2019 23:51

It's a little plain but nice enough and certainly inoffensive.

DramaAlpaca · 14/06/2019 23:52

I like it.

AverageMummy · 14/06/2019 23:53

@Casmama yes that’s my main reservation - but then with names like Noah being so popular now I wasn’t sure if it would have quite the same strength of religious association as it used to?

I prefer Marie as in Marie-Celeste or Marie-Claire....
But I went to catholic school and had Mary and all the virginity stuff jammed down my neck quite a bit.

MsMustDoBetter · 15/06/2019 00:06

Love it!

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 15/06/2019 00:09

Love it! Not very common either.

justforthisnow · 15/06/2019 00:12

Religious connotations but not so popular anymore, bit dull?

Yawninfinitum · 15/06/2019 00:13

I think Marie is much softer and a lovely name

Tavannach · 15/06/2019 00:16

i like it, but maybe more of a middle name.

BubblesBuddy · 15/06/2019 00:19

If you are Catholic it is still hugely religious. It’s a bit plain. Somewhat unadventurous and safe.

mathanxiety · 15/06/2019 01:26

Love it. An elegant classic, and very underused.

SnowyAlpsandPeaks · 15/06/2019 02:11

Mary great for a grandma

Kokeshi123 · 15/06/2019 03:32

It's a great name--sweet and unusual at the moment.
(I thought the name was "Tom" actually----my eyes must be tired!)

dreichuplands · 15/06/2019 03:41

That goodness the name isn't torn.
Mary is a nice name, I would associate it with being Catholic.

FenellaMaxwell · 15/06/2019 04:28

The thing is, Noah doesn’t have religious connotations anymore because of its popularity, whereas Mary not being popular, religion is the first thing you think.

Honestly, I hear the name Mary and I think slightly dour, middle aged woman in a two set. Sorry!

FagashJackie · 15/06/2019 04:30

I really like it.

elp30 · 15/06/2019 04:34

My mother was Maria but everyone called her Mary.

Personally, I prefer Maria but I think they're both nice.

AudacityOfHope · 15/06/2019 04:36

It's a bit drab and middle-aged. In fact not even middle-aged, the only Mary's I know are in their early 60s.

RealButterOnly · 15/06/2019 04:43

I really like it and I don't feel the religious connotations are overwhelming.
I would group it more with the classic simple names like Anna and Jane.
