Ellis for a boy

We are expecting DS1 in the summer and struggling for a boys name we both like. We have liked and then went off Caleb and Theo and are now circling around Ellis as the favourite.

I like names that are heard of and recognisable but not modern or with lots of syllables. I also like Aaron but DH is not keen.

Now that he is coming around to Ellis I am wobbling. But I can't actually think of any others I like enough to name a child. Thoughts on Ellis?? Suggestions for others?

bitchfromhell · 25/05/2019 18:37

Lovely

CallMeRachel · 25/05/2019 18:40

It's a good enough unisex name. Probably sensible nowadays Grin

Bubblysqueak · 25/05/2019 18:40

I like it and know is several.

poptypingchef · 25/05/2019 18:41

LOVE LOVE LOVE Ellis for a boy

BobbyBrewstersMagicTorch · 25/05/2019 18:42

I don't like it, sorry. Sounds a bit weak.

How about Leon or Lawrence?

MummyBear2352 · 25/05/2019 18:58

I love Ellis... know an almost 5yo Ellis & he’s super cute so that might bias my feelings

Pinkarsedfly · 25/05/2019 18:59

We must have the same taste in names. I have two dogs and a son named Caleb, Theo and Elliot Grin

Neighneigh · 25/05/2019 19:03

We know a boy Ellis who is the kindest and most lovely of all my son's friends. So I associate it with him. It's a lovely name for a boy.

Isntthatalwaystheway · 25/05/2019 19:04

REALLY like it OP, different without being unusual, Don't think I've ever met one either!

youarenotkiddingme · 25/05/2019 19:04

Love Ellis

itseasybeingcheesy · 25/05/2019 19:08

Thanks all for the thoughts. It's a shortening of Elias and I really like it as it's simple and standalone. I think I was wavering because I didn't know whether most people would assume it was a female only name as we don't know anyone called Ellis. Also we go to a church that seems swamped with little boys at the moment and to find a name that isn't already taken 2 or 3 times at church has been hard going!

@Pinkarsedfly great taste Wink

@BobbyBrewstersMagicTorch lovely suggestions thanks, do you think it seems weak to you due to being a unisex name or is there another reason?

I think this is cementing it as the top choice anyway but I'd like to hear if it's the unisex slant or something else?

It's a gorgeous name and I love Elias too.

bridgetreilly · 25/05/2019 20:35

I like Ellis (and Elias). I would avoid Aaron, because many people will pronounce it Arran.

Aph413 · 25/05/2019 20:38

Love Ellis, I have a male relative with the name. I always associate it with nice people as I've never met a horrible Ellis.

kaytee87 · 25/05/2019 21:05

My friends son is called Ellis, when they announced his birth I assumed he was a girl.

youarenotkiddingme · 25/05/2019 21:20

I didn't even know it was unisex!

The only Ellis I know is a boy.

daisypond · 25/05/2019 21:52

I like it but it’s not a shortening of Elias. I’ve never heard that at least. It’s an old Welsh name.

itseasybeingcheesy · 25/05/2019 21:57

@daisypond I had no idea it had Welsh heritage too! It's a version of Elias that means "for God" in Hebrew. I'll have to look up it's Welsh meaning too :)

I like Ellis, but it does make me think of the annoying guy who does coke in Die Hard.
