Ellis for a boy

We are expecting DS1 in the summer and struggling for a boys name we both like. We have liked and then went off Caleb and Theo and are now circling around Ellis as the favourite.

I like names that are heard of and recognisable but not modern or with lots of syllables. I also like Aaron but DH is not keen.

Now that he is coming around to Ellis I am wobbling. But I can't actually think of any others I like enough to name a child. Thoughts on Ellis?? Suggestions for others?

To me Ellis doesn’t sound weak, though Lawrence does, so guess it’s all up to preference and experience regarding the name.
I think it’s only been used as a girl’s name relatively recently
If I heard it I would think boy first.

@bridgetreilly that is how you pronounce Aaron in my experience?
Lovely name OP .

@Chickenwing I need to watch die hard again I can't remember Coke snorting Ellis! Any excuse to watch die hard though.

I love the name for boy or girl. My friends daughter is called Ellis -18 year old), so yes it has become more unisex over the years.

Other suggestions

Elliott
Fraser
Aiden
Zachary or Zac
Remy
Dexter
Quinn
Isaac
Elijah

@Shadow1234 Aidan was one of my favourite choices but DH vetoed it from the list he just couldn't get in on with it.

Loved lots of those other names too but some of them are very popular amongst friends and acquaintances at the moment so I couldn't choose any of them without their being a few of them in our friendship group.

Ellis is deffo a boys name.

Look famous women writers who wanted to publish under a male name, Ellis Bell and Ellis Peters. (Emily Bronte and Edith Pargeter, who also chose John Redfern, Jolyon Carr and Peter Benedict).

I hint it's a great choice for a boy

Ellis is VERY popular here in Wales. It's a great name got a boy. I've never, ever heard it for a girl and I think it would be mocked here.

RaininSummer · 25/05/2019 23:16

Funny as I would always assume Ellis to be a boy unless told otherwise.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 25/05/2019 23:24

I only know girls called Ellis.
