Friend of a friend picked our name

We have picked a baby name we both like.

However, a friend of my best friend has already picked this name for her daughter who is a few months old.

I've never met this friend (although they've been friends for around 10 years). The friend lives in New Zealand and is unlikely to return to the UK (hubby is from NZ). Even if she does return to the UK, it is likely to be around 200 miles from where we like. The name is in the top 100 (around 40-70) depending on the chart.

Is it unreasonable of me to be considering the name?

Yes its unreasonable and its just a name. If you like it use it. Theres always going to be babies with the same name.

SundayMorningSun · 12/05/2019 08:14

Friend of a friend?

Use the name.

fitzbilly · 12/05/2019 08:14

Use the name, why wouldn't you? Enssentially a stranger used the name you like and now you are worried about using it? That's silly. You like the name, use it.

WhenZogateSuperworm · 12/05/2019 08:14

Are you kidding? Of course you can use the name!

JiltedJohnsJulie · 12/05/2019 08:14

Absolutely not. If it's a name you want, just use it.

Elderflower14 · 12/05/2019 08:15

If you aren't likely to meet the family then I can't see a problem... Unless you think the friend might think it's odd? Does the friend know its your name of choice?

ElektraUnchained · 12/05/2019 08:16

Why is this even a question? Are you often anxious about apparantly trivial issues?

stellarfox · 12/05/2019 08:16

100% use the name! This is not a close connection at all. I would only not use a name if a brother/sister/cousin or close friend used it. If you avoided names friends of friends used you would have very little to pick from!

fessmess · 12/05/2019 08:16

I don't see the problem! I think when two babies of same name are in the same family or friendship group THAT'S a problem. It's one thing to go to school and be Amy "F" or whatever but not in your family. This will only be an issue for your friend.

Waitingforinspo · 12/05/2019 08:25

Hang on...someone you don't know, have never met, and who currently lives in New Zealand, has named their baby a name you like?

Use it! Grin

Fantasisa · 12/05/2019 08:27

This is a non issue. Use the name!

00100001 · 12/05/2019 08:32
Confused
rainbowstardrops · 12/05/2019 08:45

I think you're overthinking this!

Chilledout11 · 12/05/2019 08:48

Friend of friend in New Zealand .. no no question - use the name

Lucked · 12/05/2019 08:49

Agree. This should have no impact of your choice of name. So your friend will know two people with he same name. - hardly unusual.

MercyBodle · 12/05/2019 08:50

Way over-thinking this - as pp said - someone you don't know, have never met and lives in New Zealand - has used a currently popular name that you also like. Just use it.

AbbyHammond · 12/05/2019 08:52

Bizarre Confused

Why would you care that a stranger has named their child the same as you?

I hate to break it to you, but if it's a top 50/100 name then there will be a lot of babies named the same as yours. You might even end up with some in the same class at nursery/school.

BikeRunSki · 12/05/2019 08:54

Use it

DuffBeer · 12/05/2019 09:09

I wouldn't give this a second thought!

A friend of a friend who lives in the other side of the world?

Just use the name!

StickOfRhubarb · 12/05/2019 09:13

In the top 100! There will be plenty of babies with the same name then. Not just the baby of the friend of a friend who lived twelve thousand miles away.

flowery · 12/05/2019 09:18

You’re thinking of not using a name you like because someone you’ve never met the other side of the world has also used it? Confused

StickOfRhubarb · 12/05/2019 09:18

I’ve just had a look at the list to see the sorts of names that are on the list and they are definitely popular
Bella
Penelope
Maisie
Luna
Holly
That sort of thing.

BlueMerchant · 12/05/2019 09:18

Seriously?
Surely it's a non- issue

kayvade · 12/05/2019 09:21

friend of a friend in new zealand! use it.

Usually these threads take my breath away. You can have situations where one set of grandparents end up with two grandchildren with the same name!! and yet there will be people on the thread saying ''use it your choice your baby''. I try to consider the feelings of other people involved but in your situation you should definitely use the name!

UCOinanOCG · 12/05/2019 09:31

I am not even certain why you have given a moments headspace to this. Use the name you love.
