So, here it is, the fourth(!!!) Guessing Game baby names thread. Shock

All credit to @scotstar for creating the game, back in March 2018. Can't believe how far we've come!

Previous threads here:

1: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/baby_names/3189874-guessing-game

2: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/baby_names/3207745-Guessing-game-II

3: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/baby_names/3262724-Guessing-game-III?pg=1â„´=

The game is simple. Guess the name the poster is describing, then it's your turn! Make the clues as fiendish as you like. Grin

All are welcome to join in! @FintyTin, @Ladywillpower, @LadyGAgain and @DuggeeHugs, come join! (Plus others I've forgotten)

And since @Ladywillpower correctly guessed @FintyTin's last clue, this is @Ladywillpower**'s latest clue:

This old German name opened Pandora's box in 1929. Her royal connections meant that she waltzed off to one of the Channel Islands with the Doctor.

@Clettercletterthatsbetter has guessed Clara!

Colin?

OP posts:
Ellmau · 03/11/2020 21:03

Yes!

Ellmau · 03/11/2020 21:10

He's going to fly one day! - M&S Colin the Caterpillar, as caterpillar becomes a butterfly

But in the meantime a little Christmas connection - Colin started out as a pet name for Nicholas, and St Nicholas was the inspiration for Santa Claus

will keep us all fed. - Coin the Caterpillar again

He's also a wild swimmer - reference to Colin Firth's famous scene in Pride and Prejudice having been for a dip in the lake

and leaps over things. - Colin Jackson, former world record hurdler

He is what he eats... - the tagline on Colin the Caterpillar's packaging

and he has a faithful girlfriend. - There is also a Connie [ie Constance, ie faithful] the Caterpillar

It's love, actually! - Colin Firth was also in Love, Actually

He's rather sweet. = C the C again obviously

He once kissed an angel. - Colin Farrell was in Ballykissangel.

Woo hoo, thanks @Ellmau!

I'm so impressed by the evolution of his guessing game! This next name I'm amazed we haven't had before. It links these three:

  • Alice was introduced by this dodgy individual.
  • This Californian "family" weren't women and daughters (and it didn't end well).
  • What the hell is he writing about now? Orphaned children? Or London, or Paris? Whatever it is, there are high hopes for this bestseller.

Charles?

finallychangedmyusername · 04/11/2020 19:41

Yeah, @Ellmau! So quick (and I thought I'd created another complex one, ha!) Grin

Alice in Wonderland was written by Lewis Carroll, or Charles Dodgson.

Charles Manson (not women/daughters, but Man + son) headed up the infamous and murderous Manson family (cult).

Charles Dickens (what the hell?/what the Dickens?!) wrote Oliver Twist (orphaned children) and a Tale of Two Cities (London and Paris). The "high hopes" for this bestseller references another novel, Great Expectations.

There was an extra subtle clue talking about the "evolution" of this guessing game, also linking Charles Darwin. Grin

Back to you!

Ellmau · 04/11/2020 21:26

;)

Got it from Lewis Carroll and Manson.

New clue:

I can see a rainbow...

finallychangedmyusername · 06/11/2020 21:27

Iris?

OP posts:
Ellmau · 07/11/2020 12:57

Yes. I thought we needed an easy one ;)

finallychangedmyusername · 07/11/2020 17:59

It took me some time @Ellmau befre inspiration finally hit! Grin

Next one:

To some he's quite ordinary but to me he's quite the action man - I could just drink this guy up! I would have been wed sometime previously, had he not been involved.

OP posts:
Ellmau · 07/11/2020 18:04

Joe?

finallychangedmyusername · 07/11/2020 18:16

Haha, so quick! Yes, what else could I possibly do tonight?! Grin

(Also thought I'd go for an easy one after Madelief!)

Ordinary = Average Joe
Action man = G.I. Joe
Drink = cup of joe (coffee)
Last sentence = "If it hadn't been for Cotton Eye Joe, I'd been married long time ago"....

OP posts:
Ellmau · 08/11/2020 00:42

Got the first two.

New name:

Hanging by a thread...

Ellmau · 08/11/2020 10:03

You won't get lost with her around.

finallychangedmyusername · 08/11/2020 12:33

Penelope?

OP posts:
Ellmau · 08/11/2020 15:51

No, but you might be in the right kind of area.

Dumped by her first love, she found love again with a big partier.

LadyGAgain · 09/11/2020 00:00

Charlotte?

Ellmau · 09/11/2020 00:05

No.

Her brother was a monster in hiding.

finallychangedmyusername · 09/11/2020 13:24

Alexa?

OP posts:
Ellmau · 09/11/2020 18:46

No.

A bit labyrinthine, this one.

LadyGAgain · 10/11/2020 23:22

Jennifer?

Ellmau · 11/11/2020 00:13

No.

More classical.

DuggeeHugs · 11/11/2020 16:16

Ariadne?

Ellmau · 11/11/2020 18:21

Yes!

All clues from the classical Ariadne. She gave a ball of thread to Theseus when he went into the labyrinth where her half brother the Minotaur was hidden. She ran away with Theseus afterwards but he dumped her on an island on his way home, but she then married the god Dionysius, god of wine etc.

finallychangedmyusername · 12/11/2020 19:31

Great name @Ellmau and well played @DuggeeHugs!
