Do you like your name?

As I'm naming a baby girl, I'm wondering what you like/don't like about your name. (You don't have to say what it is.)

I have always liked my name. I like that it's feminine but not too girly or frilly. There's lots of them my age, but that's never bothered me - and there's a few different nicknames anyway. I never felt my name was boring or shared by too many people, although it was popular. I always liked that there were lots of famous women in history with the same name.

I didn't like that my siblings had a story to their names, and mine was a name my parents "just liked"!

So what do you like/dislike about your own name?

It's short (4 letters), is no-nonsense and not flowery or twee.
There isn't anything I dislike about it.

churchthecat · 23/04/2019 11:45

I hate my name. It's a very 80's name that has dated really badly, and was fashionable for young parents in the 80's.

I wish my parents had given me a more "classic" name that didn't age.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 23/04/2019 11:54

No I despise it. I've never forgave my parents for calling me it (Clare).
Its the fact that theres no shortened or friendly version. To me its taken away my right to have an alternative name. Plus its so dull and mundane.
I also hate the way some people pronounce it. I've had Cluuur and Cliiiiiire, at least say it properlyAngry
My sister is Aimee. Granted that's not exactly beyond the joke with the imagination but at least she can be Aim /Aims.
Of course I'd never change it though as its the only name my mum and dad gave me.

Eliza9919 · 23/04/2019 11:57

I like mine. It's unusual without being weird/not too common. It's fairly long at 8 letters but it goes well with my surname.

MustardYellowJumper · 23/04/2019 12:10

That's a shame, babyspider. I actually really love the name Claire, but it's true it doesn't lend itself to nicknames... (Doesn't work with our surname at all, so that baby is safe from it!)

When I was younger, I went through a phase of not liking it, but actually, as I've aged, I like it. It is a name that is usually shortened, but I prefer the longer, full version and always introduce myself as such.
Biggest problem is with people spelling it - there are a couple of 'interesting ' options which I really don't like - mine is the traditional spelling.

chilicheesefries · 23/04/2019 12:22

Sharing names with a place in the US which is pronounced differently to my name as I am from a non English speaking country. It is a fairly common name in my country of origin but whenever I meet someone from outside they pronounce it just like the US place.

chilicheesefries · 23/04/2019 12:25

Hit post beforehand I finished!

I used to really dislike the link to the location but I’m actually quite fond of my name now and in a way it links back to where I’m from given the pronounciation and they immediately stop thinking I’m American Grin which a lot of people assume!

FenellaMaxwell · 23/04/2019 12:27

I don’t hate it. My parents gave me what became a few years after I was born, a top 10 name, where it has stayed for several decades, but they gave me a forrin spelling of it, so I spend my life correcting people. I’ve always been the only one in my class at school, but the class 3 years younger and down has always had at least 2 or 3 per class.

RedFox695 · 23/04/2019 12:29

Despite my name being very popular now, when I was young it wasn't so popular. I've always liked it, lots of nickname options (although I prefer the full version), easy to spell and pronounce, and I've had lots of compliments my whole life.

Easterbunnynearlyhere · 23/04/2019 12:30

Absolutely hate it. Never met another one. Even dh never uses it!!
All dc's friends say its odd!

beanaseireann · 23/04/2019 12:33

No. Far too common in my age group. Usually in a group of ten people there will be another with the same name. It's a really plain simple name. My mother was quite religious and chose this saints name specifically because she's the patron saint of ...................................

Ellabella989 · 23/04/2019 12:37

mine is ok. It was in the top 5 most popular girls names in the 90s

happyhillock · 23/04/2019 12:38

I love my name and middle name, i was named after my Dad's sister who died of heart problem's aged 22, i was born 5 year's after she died, i gave my 1st DD my first name as a middle name, my 2nd DD also got my middle name as a middle name, my first name is quite traditional i love it.

NorthernRunner · 23/04/2019 12:39

I’ve always liked my name, I liked that there were no others in my school, it isn’t long, and it is a name for all ages. (Adele)

weebarra · 23/04/2019 12:42

Mine is ok, but very very popular as either a first or middle name when I was born (late 70's). In any sizeable group of women of the same age, there will be at least 2 of us.

LokiDokiArtichoki · 23/04/2019 12:43

I’m a Lucy. It’s boring, cutesy ‘little girl’ and I don’t think it’s grown with me. Feel a bit embarrassed saying it and wished it was something longer and more grown up.

GummyGoddess · 23/04/2019 12:43

Yes I like the name, no I don't like the unique spelling my mother saddled me with.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 23/04/2019 12:45

I like mine, i like the fact its traditional in its full length and has many popular shortened versions.

Roseredwine12 · 23/04/2019 12:47

I love my name: charlotte
I've always had compliments. Back in the day it wasn't popular but it's risen in popularity which doesn't both me. It's a classic, strong name and you can get lots of nicknames out of it.
As a grown women it's sophisticated.... Probably not a bit like me Grin

NakedBrainStrollingInManhatten · 23/04/2019 12:48

I like my name, however it's the combination of my first and surname that I like. My first name (Charlotte) is fairly pretty but boring. It's good for nicknames, which I get a lot of.

My surname is more of a "wow" name and I tend to introduce myself using my full name as people will then remember the whole name where as just Charlotte feels a little forgettable.

Namechange8471 · 23/04/2019 12:48

Mines Joanne, I hate it! I'm only 29 but feel as though it's a 40 years + name!

I was going to be called Charlene off neighbours though so swings and roundabouts I suppose...

Slippershoes · 23/04/2019 12:49

I wouldn't pick my name no. But its grown on me over the years. Unfortunately one of the spice girls had a shortening of it and people used to call me that. I have a completely unrelated nickname that most people I know call me.

NakedBrainStrollingInManhatten · 23/04/2019 12:51

@Roseredwine12 how funny! Quite different perspectives on the same name.

I do agree that it's a name that ages well, suits cute little babies and a sophisticated name for a grown woman.

Personally I wish I had a less safe name and something a bit more unusual and stronger sounding. I don't feel like it really suits me. But that's always the baby name risk isn't it?

SimonJT · 23/04/2019 12:54

I hated mine so I changed it, (Simon is nothing like my real name) I had a very distinctive Pakistani name, so I changed it to a more British name that I preferred, people can actually pronounce my name now.
