Do you like your name?

As I'm naming a baby girl, I'm wondering what you like/don't like about your name. (You don't have to say what it is.)

I have always liked my name. I like that it's feminine but not too girly or frilly. There's lots of them my age, but that's never bothered me - and there's a few different nicknames anyway. I never felt my name was boring or shared by too many people, although it was popular. I always liked that there were lots of famous women in history with the same name.

I didn't like that my siblings had a story to their names, and mine was a name my parents "just liked"!

So what do you like/dislike about your own name?

I want to know what all the names are!!

DramaAlpaca · 23/04/2019 18:46

I like mine, it's actually my middle name & I share it with my grandmother. It's a classic, not used too often these days. I'm eternally grateful that my parents chose to call me by my middle name because I detest my first name.

Sakura7 · 23/04/2019 18:57

I like the actual name itself but while it's a little bit unusual (and probably posh) in the UK, it's pretty much unheard of in Ireland. It's the original version of a much more common (and old fashioned) name, so I get called that all the time.

My name also doesn't go very well with my surname, lots of double letters in both.

LettuceLeave · 23/04/2019 18:57

Don't like it. Always wished for an uncommon or unisex name.

Grinchly · 23/04/2019 19:01

I love my name!

It's traditional, long, ( a whole four syllables) and though it lends itself to many shortenings and nicknames, I always insist on the full version.

EggsFried · 23/04/2019 19:10

No, I don't like mine at all. It has several different accepted pronunciations and mine is probably the least common, so 95% of people say it a different way when they see it written down, and a lot of people look confused and ask me to repeat it when I tell them my name, as the name isn't widely used even in its most common pronunciation. I know some more confident people won't see the issue, but I find it really awkward to correct people on how to pronounce it, and if I don't do it the first time I sort of feel like I never can as people are Confused that you've let them say your name wrong multiple times without correcting them. I've also had very rude people tell me that I'm wrong in how to pronounce my own name, and a uni friend who had assumed that my name was really but I had changed it to be different Confused

I would love to have a name that is easily recognisable and has no ambiguity on pronunciation!

LynetteScavo · 23/04/2019 19:12

I'm not keen on mine. It was very unusual when I was born, then very popular in the 90's, and has now gone out of popularity again.

It's very normal though, and I'm the type of person who wouldn't want an unusual name.

One of my sisters has a much better, timeless, classic, strong but pretty name (IMO), the other has an awful name so I can't complain.

bingirl · 23/04/2019 19:21

I really didn't like my name growing up and wished my parents had called me Jennifer but as I've got older I actually quite like it now (Rachel).

spiderlight · 23/04/2019 19:24

No. It's far too old for me - all my life, my peers have commented that it's their mum/aunt/gran's name, or their middle name after an older relative. My mum specifically chose a name that couldn't be shortened, so I was the only one never to have a nickname growing up. I much prefer my middle name.

madhousee · 23/04/2019 19:25

I absolutely hate my name!

I hate saying & hearing it.

AlbusSeverusMalfoy · 23/04/2019 19:27

I dont mind it. There are other ways of spelling it but mine is the supposed correct way. I am called the shorted version rather the full given version with i dont mind either but i hate the even shorter bit of it because growing up it was a 'boys name'

namechange542 · 23/04/2019 19:38

Name changed for this.

My name is Shanie. I didn't like it as a kid and thought it was weird & it was mispronounced shanny instead of shay-nee. I quite like it now tho & it has never been shortened except by people trying to piss me off and call me shane. But I do like it now and couldn't imagine being called different, Never met another though.

Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 23/04/2019 19:39

I love mine it works both long and short.

Alex and Alexandra.

I also love my middle name is I feel it all sounds nice together.

Alexandra Jayne.

CatkinToadflax · 23/04/2019 19:42

My name is Elizabeth and I absolutely loathe it. It's too long and too formal-sounding! I go by one of its many, many shortenings.

sweetsaltypopcorn · 23/04/2019 21:06

Don't like mine.
I'm one of many, but the others are usually at least 15 years older.

FinallyMrsE · 23/04/2019 21:14

I don’t mind mine at all, it’s inoffensive, pretty timeless but with 3 of us in the school mum group of friends, I don’t think it particularly bothers any of us though. (Emma)

ilovebronn · 23/04/2019 21:22

I love my name and my maiden name. My married name is rubbish and I wish I'd have kept my old surname!

lordofthefries · 23/04/2019 21:26

I hate my name (Katie), it just feels too boring and common and hasn’t aged well on me; but I hate Kate just as much. My last name was also very boring, one of the most common last names in the world. Thankfully DH’s name is very unusual and I love it

Magmatic80 · 23/04/2019 21:31

I love my name. It’s quite pretty sounding, and springlike. It’s unusual enough to remark on it if I meet another one. My Dad chose my name. My surname is unusual in spelling, spelt slightly differently it’s a brand name so I automatically spell it when I say it. If I get married I will keep my maiden name, it’s mine, and I’m the last and youngest in my extended family with it, so I feel that I don’t want it lost.

MadisonAvenue · 23/04/2019 21:32

I hate mine. It's very much of it's time, the 60s and early 70s, and my parents chose it because it was popular and meant that I wouldn't stand out.

I can't even use my middle name (Gail) instead as I hate that too.

MercyBodle · 24/04/2019 03:53

I don't like my name. 3 reasons: it sounds terrible with my surname, it was extremely common in my birth decade, and I hate the obvious nickname that most people immediately shorten it to.

I like feminine but not fussy or frilly strong sounding names. Known but not common. And most of all to sound good with the surname. Even though I'm an older person I'm considering changing my name to either a variation of my original name or to a completely different name. Friends and family can just continue to use my old name as they do, but in new situations - work, study etc - I can feel much more confident about my name.

mathanxiety · 24/04/2019 04:04

beanaseireann no, that was my best friend Smile.

ps1991 · 24/04/2019 04:10

I like my name, Carly, it’s not very common but also isn’t weird or out there. I do struggle to say it though. I think as I’ve gotten older I’ve become conscious of how it sounds with a northern accent and struggled with it 🙄 I like that it can’t be shortened too!

sashh · 24/04/2019 05:40

I've grown into the contracted version of my name, my original name was a classic but I was cursed with a made up spelling which was ditched by use of a deed poll.

Tiramisu1 · 24/04/2019 08:10

I hate mine. It's very much of it's time, the 60s and early 70s, and my parents chose it because it was popular and meant that I wouldn't stand out.

This should be a lesson to all those who claim popularity doesn't matter. I think lots of kids and especially adults would prefer not to have a popular name that eventually sounds dated and that they have to share with lots of others.
