Do you like your name?

As I'm naming a baby girl, I'm wondering what you like/don't like about your name. (You don't have to say what it is.)

I have always liked my name. I like that it's feminine but not too girly or frilly. There's lots of them my age, but that's never bothered me - and there's a few different nicknames anyway. I never felt my name was boring or shared by too many people, although it was popular. I always liked that there were lots of famous women in history with the same name.

I didn't like that my siblings had a story to their names, and mine was a name my parents "just liked"!

So what do you like/dislike about your own name?

Meant to add, using the Irish version was very trendy in the 60s in Ireland.

There is no nickname but I have sometimes been known by the pronunciation small children sometimes manage.

I hate my name. It's a virtue name, and far too much to live up to!

People often expect me to be Black-African as well Confused (It's not as unusual as "Blessing" or "Godslove" etc)

BelulahBlanca · 23/04/2019 16:58

I love mine now. It’s Ashleigh- so V.90s but I’ve only ever met a handful. I like the shortening of Ash though my mum hates it. It’s never bothered me when people spell it Ashley-though sometimes people email me and spell it wrong which is a little grating as it’s right there!

VoyageInTheDark · 23/04/2019 17:02

I quite like mine. It's pretty 80s and there were others in my year at school with it but that didn't bother me. I like that I've never had to spell it out (unlike my surname) and it's not too girly or too plain.

LokiDokiArtichoki · 23/04/2019 17:05

@Scoose my sister is a Josephine- she’s 20 now and I’ve always been jealous that she has a long, unpopular but known name that has lots of options for nicknames.

She goes by ‘Fee’ at the moment but has been a Josie, Jojo and Posy depending on what ‘phase’ she was going through 🤣

BlueMerchant · 23/04/2019 17:07

Like mine. It's a classic.

JuniorAsparagus · 23/04/2019 17:13

I don't like mine. It is a typical 1950s name which always appears on Mumsnet lists of 'Names that should never come back'. It suggests a solid matronly woman in a cardigan.

FirstTimeMummy20 · 23/04/2019 17:16

Always really disliked my name, to point where I cringe when people say it in a sentence.. I was the only one in school with my name but i've noticed a couple of people who have named their children it (Paisley).

User10fuckingmillion · 23/04/2019 17:19

I like my name but the mumsnet hive mind thinks it’s wet so that’s nice it’s true in my case tbf

TinyMarie · 23/04/2019 17:21

Nope! I'm Sian and get called everything but, the most common being Sean, Si-Anne or Se-Anne. Drives me insane and made sure my daughter has a name you can't mispronounce!

CaptSkippy · 23/04/2019 17:25

Like my name, but on my wishlist would have been a more internationally friendly name with a more common spelling. Non-native speakers of my mother-tongue always mispronounce it and even native speakers often misspell it.

KateyKube · 23/04/2019 17:27

I hate my name. It’s very much of its time and thus is dated. When it appears on tv the character is always an airhead. And in the real world you’re more likely to hear it on a council estate than at a polo match. I’d much prefer to have a classic name like Elizabeth, Joanna or Rose. Something with no preconceptions.

Sunlov · 23/04/2019 17:29

I'm ambivalent about it, but the way I pronounce it tends to be different to how others pronounce it.

Eg. Maureen and Marine.

Craftycorvid · 23/04/2019 17:38

Mine is biblical - think old testament - and not very popular outside Judaism (I’m not Jewish, nor is my family). I was the only one right through school, at work and hardly ever meet another one! I don’t dislike it, indeed I’ve made it ‘me’ over time. I do still have twinges of resentment that I was named for a terribly saintly great grandma and I can tell ma is still a bit disappinted I didn’t measure up! Grin Had I been a boy it would have been worse. I’d have been saddled with a very naff name that was that of my dad’s elder brother, the ‘favourite’ snd who died tragically young. Imagine the fallout from that....!

Scoose · 23/04/2019 17:40

loki I'm Josie to everyone apart from my family who all call me jo my twin occasionally calls me jo jo

vagabond225 · 23/04/2019 17:42

I'm not keen.

My name is Anne-Marie.

Double barrelled names get ridiculed on here for being naff but mine is a 'proper' name as far as I know.

I don't like it much because people always want to call me Anne which is the dullest name on earth. Then all the Maries I know are loud and uncouth.

Aimily · 23/04/2019 17:52

I've no love nor hate for my name.
Its not overly common, although one of my closest friends shares my name and in my friendship circle there is a 3rd (maybe more popular than I'd considered)
It was a relatively popular name in the late 80s/early 90s when I arrived.
At primary school I was the only one in the school, at secondary I was one of 3 in the year.
I think it suits me and can't think of a different name that would...
But I also have so many nicknames for a 3 letter name it's crazy because a lot of them make my name longer 🤦‍♀️

Princessfaffalot · 23/04/2019 17:58

Nope! My name is Carly and it’s unusual enough that there aren’t that many around (and I could never get anything with my name on as a child!) but I’ve been told it’s a name considered to be a bit chavvy 😳. I remember someone kindly informing me that “Carly” was number 3 in the suns top 10 names for “easy women”. Misogynistic bullshit in a nasty newspaper but sad to hear the connotations with my name!

bugeyedbarber · 23/04/2019 18:00

I've a classic name (currently in top 10) but spelt in an unusual way due to my Polish heritage. People butcher it mercilessly when they try and pronounce it from how it's spelt. I considered changing the spelling to the Anglo Saxon version but I've embraced the uniqueness and use it as a conversation starter Grin

KellyMarieTunstall2 · 23/04/2019 18:03

I've never been fond of my name as people immediately shorten it, or ask what I'm called as if it's just too long to say! It id the assumption that I must have a nickname as my name is just sooooooo formal and boring that annoys me.

Princessfaffalot · 23/04/2019 18:05

Also I understand it more popular in the US but over here it’s very unpopular.

beanaseireann · 23/04/2019 18:13

mathanxiety
Is it Siobhán ?
Wink

Clownfish123 · 23/04/2019 18:21

I have a name that peaked in the 70's even though I'm an 80's child. I don't hate the name but I wish it was less 'dated'.
I am now loving a girl's name that I think will suffer the same fate (fast rise in popularity and then plummet) and not sure whether to go for it or not.

LemonInterceptor · 23/04/2019 18:37

I'm a Hannah. It's ok. Would rather have something more unusual but it's not weird or embarassing, everyone can say it or spell it (even if they miss the second H sometimes).

LemonInterceptor · 23/04/2019 18:38

Say it and* spell it
