Is it a name on its own?

well its Margaret but like a lot of the old fashioned names people prefer the shortened version eg. Charlie not Charles, Teddy not Edward- if you like it its fine

SoHotADragonRetired · 29/03/2019 13:44

Fine with it as what you call a child, but I can't get on board with putting contractions on a birth certificate. Go Margaret.

TeenTimesTwo · 29/03/2019 13:44

As Only said. Give her the full name, then use the nickname. She then has the option later to be Peggy or Margaret, or Mags etc.

Chocolateisfab · 29/03/2019 13:44

I had a black cat called Peggy.
It was a boy!

Expressedways · 29/03/2019 13:46

My boss is Peggy short for Margaret but she’s American and 60. I think it’s a bit dated but maybe that means it’s overdue for a comeback?!

Bookworm4 · 29/03/2019 13:48

Peggy and Margaret are awful, some old names are nice but not these, imagine the nicknames at school. Cute for a baby isn't necessarily nice on a teenager/adult.

Tiramisu1 · 29/03/2019 13:48

It's too close to Piggy, I'm really not keen.

I love Margherita or Marguerite!

Tiramisu1 · 29/03/2019 13:49

Also, how do you get Peggy from Margaret Confused

TeenTimesTwo · 29/03/2019 13:51

According to Buzzfeed: Daisy and Peggy = Margaret. It seems like there should be a long explanation for Daisy, but it's as simple as this: The French word for "daisy" is "marguerite." As for Peggy? Well, Margaret was shorted to nicknames like Meg or Meggy, and the rhyming nickname trend turned Meggy into Peggy.

Tiramisu1 · 29/03/2019 13:54

Meggy is a much nicer short form for Margaret than Peggy!

NightDreaming · 29/03/2019 14:05

I think Peggy is a lovely name and if you like it you should go for it. Only use Margaret if you like it. Jees, people use all different names and abbreviations for babies these days. It’s not like you’re trying to name your baby Hiccup or Doorway. Peggy is a name lots of people will have. OP, if you like it use it. Enjoy your baby! xx

KathyS901 · 29/03/2019 14:06

Peggy is nice and very cool but Margaret is horrible, don't lumber her with a name like Margaret!

BlueMerchant · 29/03/2019 14:08

I wouldn't put 'Peggy' as main name.
I really don't like Margaret though.

missmouse101 · 29/03/2019 14:10

Not at all keen on Peggy. Just sounds harsh and ugly.

OldAndWornOut · 29/03/2019 14:10

I like Peggy. Smile

NoShoeShops · 29/03/2019 14:35

My DM is a Margaret and she can’t stand it.

I’m not keen on Peggy, it’s more of a nickname. Harsh sounding. Or trying too hard to be cool.

JimJamJarmusch · 29/03/2019 15:08

Generally, I don't understand why anyone would put a "full" name if they only intend to use the short form. If you want to call your kid "Ben" just call him Ben! He doesn't need to be "Benjamin" on his passport!

I would hesitate with Peggy though. Maybe it's just because I'm not fond of it, but it sounds more nickname than name to me. Like calling your kid Flossie or something.

That's just my two cents!

Ploppymoodypants · 29/03/2019 15:13

Penny is lovely. Go for it.

Also agree that marguerite or margherita are lovely names.

Thequeenspug · 29/03/2019 15:22

I don’t like Peggy reminds me too much of Peggy Mitchel from Eastenders. Or piggy. Or pug! Either connotation is not nice.

And it’s not a classic name. It’s very nicknamey and will date.

EngagedAgain · 29/03/2019 15:29

What tiramisu suggests (save me trying to spell them) similar but much nicer.

Flamingosnbears · 29/03/2019 15:33

Not a name on it's own in my eyes it's a nickname which is a very popular style of naming now it's quite retro sounding reminds me instantly of the Buddy Holly song Peggy Sue...

Calixtine · 29/03/2019 17:38

I like it. Cute but in a slightly edgy way.

RuthW · 29/03/2019 19:56

Margaret is lovely but Peggy on it's own is awful. Nice for a nickname though.

Sophronia · 29/03/2019 23:52

I like it, I could see Peggy being the new Poppy.

MercyBodle · 30/03/2019 00:10

I like Peggy and would consider using as is. Don't use Margaret unless you love it - and it doesn't appeal to me. Another option is Peggy as nn for something else eg Penelope on the bc.
