Is it a name on its own?

Peggy is short for Margaret but I think it's too harsh/nickname sounding on its own.

Do you like Patsy as a similar name? Or Meg/Megan/Maggie?

MoonStarsSun · 30/03/2019 00:17

(Personally I love Margot but didn't get to use it!)

ourkidmolly · 30/03/2019 00:17

There's an instagram influencer called The Frugality and her dd is Peggy. She's always chasing the cool so it must be up there.

Fridasrage · 30/03/2019 00:24

I LOVE Marguerite Smile

I think Peggy is nice and if you really like it you should have it. I do think it sounds a bit nick-namey for an official document maybe (?) but the times are really changing in that regard, there are so many Alfies and Charlies out there.

Just wanted to say, absolutely not Meggy. Meggy is dire

SarahAHull · 30/03/2019 00:25

Don't like the name Peggy tbh. Reminds me of Peggy Mitchell haha. Anyone else think the same?

Inniu · 30/03/2019 00:30

I like it possibly because I like all the Peggy’s I know.

Kokeshi123 · 30/03/2019 01:43

Awful, sorry. It's undignified, it makes me think of clothes pegs and also too close to "piggy."

YouBumder · 30/03/2019 01:45

I want to hate Peggy and it does make me think of Peggy in hi di hi but I also can’t help but think it’s cute!

But yes it’s a pet name for Margaret xx

EngagedAgain · 30/03/2019 08:39

Definitely not Peggy as the official name or Meggy. I think Margot would be the best alternative to all the suggestions. It looks and sounds modern, short, easy to spell and quite sweet. Still got the possibility of developing into a nickname.

TatianaLarina · 30/03/2019 08:39

Awful, dated and dowdy.

Conjures old ladies with wrinkled stockings and straggly buns.

Perdy - short for Perdita. Posy. Polly. Phoebe. Poppy?

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 30/03/2019 08:47

There are lots of little Peggys near me (East London). I personally would use Margaret on the birth cert and then call her Peggy, as per custom.

There have also been several recent threads about the name, so it might be peaking a bit.

DarlingLittleBabyName · 30/03/2019 17:12

I've always thought of it as a stand alone name. v cute, i can picture it on someone of all ages! x

Mrslouislou · 30/03/2019 19:36

Margaret it lovely
Peggy is too much like a nickname and quite harsh as a stand-alone name.

myidentitymycrisis · 30/03/2019 19:42

I suggest this when pp ask for girl names because I love it. Has a family association for me though. We used Peg for short.

Tentomidnight · 30/03/2019 19:47

Awful, sorry. It sounds really clumpy and flat and ugly to me. I think it’s the ‘gg’ sound.

LadyPenelope68 · 30/03/2019 19:49

Peggy is definitely a name in it's own right, not just a shortened version of Margaret. I like it because it's my Mum's name.

MillicentMartha · 30/03/2019 19:59

My mum’s sister was called Peggy, short for Margaret, but never called anything but Peggy. I’m afraid I don’t like it. Much prefer Maggie as NN. My dad’s sister was also Margaret but her NN was Marnie. Much cooler than Peggy IMO. They would both be in their late 80s now.

B1rdinthebush · 30/03/2019 20:09

My daughter is called Peggy and I've never had anything but compliments on it. No one has ever said it's too close to "Piggy", that's for sure Hmm

starzig · 30/03/2019 20:12

I love it. You don't need to be a Margaret either. What us the point in having a name you use and a different name on your birth certificate. Completely odd concept to me.

borntobequiet · 30/03/2019 20:17

I had a very very old friend - she died a couple of years ago, in her 90s. Her name was Peggy and her lifelong annoyance was that her parents had given her the name Peggy rather than Margaret. Apparently the Vicar queried it at her baptism but her (quite formidable and very posh) mother gave him “a look”. Peggy held a grudge about it into her last year of life. Her sisters were given “proper” names, which made it worse.
Don’t do it!

RuffleCrow · 30/03/2019 20:25

I know it's going out of style now but you get Peggy much more easily from Megan. And you won't have the Thatcher connotations. Neither are 'real' names though I suppose. Didn't stop me. No way was i putting Margaret on dd's birth certificate! If you go back far enough all names are invented anyway.

Miljah · 30/03/2019 20:41

I'm old (late 50s) so have quite a few now gone great aunts called things like Peggy, Elsie, Mabel, Bertha...

Singlenotsingle · 30/03/2019 20:45

I've got a dog called Peggy.

Hotpinkangel19 · 30/03/2019 20:58

I think Peggy is an awful name! My DM was called Margaret and she hated her name too.

HarrietM87 · 30/03/2019 21:38

It just sounds so clunky to me - those gs probably. Like calling your daughter Claggy or Piggy or Boggy.
