Isn't that the name of the guy who Lucy breaks up with for George in Room with a View?

Pemba · 25/03/2019 21:03

Clive is a retired bank manager or something equally dull. He reads the Daily Telegraph and plays golf. He's probably in the Masons. His wife is bored out of her mind.

Awful name. Clyde maybe? That has quite a different vibe.

averylongtimeago · 25/03/2019 21:04

Ian
Andrew
David
John
Mark
Stephen
Richard
All good solid names, I like all of them and the men I know with those names-

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 25/03/2019 21:04

You can just tell though @LadyMonicaBaddingham

Ox136jl · 25/03/2019 21:06

The Room with a View guy was Cecil. Almost as bad as Clive...

BestIsWest · 25/03/2019 21:07

I had a huge crush on a Clive when I was in school. He was a sixth former and I thought he was so cool. (Showing my age).

Betty777 · 25/03/2019 21:08

Gosh, Daniel Day-Lewis in Room with a View! Haven't thought about that film in years. Her brother (Rupert Graves) was dreamy.........

SeventhWave · 25/03/2019 21:09

I knew a Clive once - he was repellent. I had to throw him out of my house during a party, because he shut me out of my own kitchen by leaning against the door while he argued with someone in there.

Boy, was I livid. I literally had him in an armlock with one hand and by the back of his collar with the other, and I frogmarched him out. He was a bit taken aback Grin

Apart from that, it's a nice name...

BestIsWest · 25/03/2019 21:11

Averylongtimeago you’ve just named every boy in my class at school. Apart from the Martins. Four of them.

YouBumder · 25/03/2019 21:13

I’m surprised there were as many as 4. Little baby Clive Grin

Awful OP, sorry!

KurriKurri · 25/03/2019 21:14

Is anyone called Mervyn these days ? - There were two in my class at school (Jurassic Period) - I lump Clive in with that name - ditto Nigel.

So far this thread has mentioned my son's name and my X husband's. I'm awaiting the arrival of my DDad's name for the full house.

YouBumder · 25/03/2019 21:15

I’m just trying to imagine how I’d remain composed if I met someone with a new baby boy and they told me his name was Clive HmmGrin

RoomForMore · 25/03/2019 21:15

Clive with the middle name Balonz?

KurriKurri · 25/03/2019 21:16

Just thought of Clive Stafford- Smith - he carries off Clivedom in a cool way

Treefloof · 25/03/2019 21:24

I dont know any Clives, I know a clem which I think is short for Clement but I haven't asked him that.
Some nice names
Luke
Marcus
Lee
Isaac
Noah.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 25/03/2019 21:25

Look, I was watching “The Baby Club” earlier and there was a wee baby Ian, saints preserve us.

CaptainSquirrel · 25/03/2019 21:29

The Clive I used to date was a total gonzo, nothing like an accountant. Maybe it was in reaction to his name? Be careful, OP.

BertrandRussell · 25/03/2019 21:33

Nobody blinks an eyelid at Stanley or Herbie or Alfred. You mark my words- Clive will be the name de nos jour in a few years time. Get in early!

cringe, that's just reminded me of the time someone told me their new baby was called Steve and I laughed because I thought they were joking...

NameChange30 · 25/03/2019 21:44

Noooo we can't have nice names on this thread, you're ruining it @averylongtimeago and @Treefloof!

(Clem is indeed short for Clement and it's NOTHING like Clive)

RMogs · 25/03/2019 21:46

Clive makes me think of the slimey 50 year old bus driver from school who had an affair with a 15year old girl

NameChange30 · 25/03/2019 21:48

I'm adding Ian to my list of dream names.

OP, I've never understood the appeal of the name Stanley. And Herbie... I guess I only like it because of Herbie Hancock. And Alfred, ugh so many Alfies and Freddies. All nicer names than Clive, though!

ElloBrian · 25/03/2019 21:48

The thing is though, babies don’t last long. And then they are a person. Who has to carry around their silly frilly diminutive-as-a-proper-name for the rest of their life. Embarrassing.

Whether you like Clive or not, it’s a proper name. Unlike many of today’s very silly popular baby names.

ElloBrian · 25/03/2019 21:50

I know someone who called their child Vincent by the way. Nothing wrong with it - it’s a proper name. He got called Lil Baby Vee-Vee for the first couple of years and then he could graduate to a bit of dignity. Unlike some of his classmates.

PinkieTuscadero · 25/03/2019 21:50

Nobody blinks an eyelid at Stanley or Herbie or Alfred.

All awful. And don't even start me on Wilfred.
