DH hates my favourite name, help!

I absolutely love the boys name Jude. However I’m now 35 weeks and my husband has steadfastly refused to even consider it, he’s been clear that he hates it ever since I first suggested it. So I really want to find a new name I can like as much, I don’t want our baby to have a name his dad hates. This is our third child and he went with my favourite both times, so it would not be on if I was to insist on Jude. Anyway - please help! He wrote me a list of ten names he likes and said I could pick any and he’d be happy. Of the list I like Tobias and Laurence, probably nicknamed either Toby or Laurie. But I don’t love either. I felt Jude was perfect as I loved the short but complete sound of it. And it feels classic but not overused - although I know it’s popular. Our daughter is Etta to give a sense of our taste, and we were thinking of Lina or Delia if this one had been a girl. Any suggestions???

Funny that people are saying it’s overused. We haven’t met another one and when we had him everyone in the hospital was cooing over the fact they hadn’t had a Jude in a long time. These things are very regional.
We also considered Idris! But worried it was too linked to the actor and that people would think we were uber fans. Another name we considered was Rowan (but if people think Jude is too feminine I can’t inagine Rowan going down well) I also like
Jesse
Nathaniel (Nat)
Caleb
Laith
Ari
Turns out I like girly or biblical names lol.

Cbeebiesrehab · 24/03/2019 17:12

Oh and Rex, Dexter and Rufus.

alwaysonadiet1 · 24/03/2019 17:14

Jasper, Barnaby, Elliot,

Cbeebiesrehab · 24/03/2019 17:15

I forgot about Jasper, my DD would have been Jasper had she been a boy.

Lovelylugs · 24/03/2019 17:17

What about Stanley/Stan or I like Luke too.

mummmy2017 · 24/03/2019 18:10

He gave you ten names that he liked.
He let you choose the two babies before, play the game and choose one he wants...

Idris!!
I also love Isaac from that list

MollyYouInDangerGirl · 24/03/2019 18:25

Aww I love jude! I love toby too so that would probably be my choice. Really not keen on Laurence it's very... poncy? Sorry that sounds horrible but cant think of another way to describe it!

MollyYouInDangerGirl · 24/03/2019 18:28

Just seen you listed the other names!

My personal thoughts:
Alfred - dont like
Isaac - really cute
Xavier - dont like
Winston - dont like, it's old fashioned and it seems kind of like a dogs name
Enzo - I wouldn't use it personally but it is cool
Zachary - nice, prefer zach
Wyatt - dislike as it's too american
Rory - love this, it's probably my favourite of all the ones I've seen you list
Charles - no too traditional
Idris - I feel like this only suits Idris Elba:D
Asher - too American

I feel like all the names on your list are all really inconsistent like none of them are in the same style?

My faves you've mentioned have been toby, rory and isaac :)

Shadow1234 · 24/03/2019 18:35

Lawrence (spelt this way) would be my favourite, with Idris as a close second.

Other suggestions:

Ezra
Marcus
Vincent (Vinny)
Dominic (Dom)
Elijah

Icklepup · 24/03/2019 21:09

Love Idris! Or Zach

StripyDeckchair · 24/03/2019 21:33

How about Lucas? Has a feel of both Laurence and Jude about it I think.

Thanks all. Some good suggestions here. I like Laurence as seems more English to me than Lawrence, and we are currently ex pats - although planning to move to London in 18 months. We don’t really have a naming style, the baby’s name doesn’t have to match his siblings. I’d prefer he had his own initial but I guess it doesn’t really matter. Idris seems very divisive! My DH loves it, but I think it’s too linked to the actor. I also think Winston is too well used for dogs, as a previous poster mentioned. All my mums friends seem to have dogs named Winston, Pearl or Fergus.

I think I’m going to try and stop obsessing about it, take the list, then pick one when I’ve had the baby and hopefully high on post birth hormones. My oldest son was going to be named Florence or Matilda, I spent days trying to decide, then when it turned out they had got the sex wrong I suggested his name while recovering and my husband agreed instantly. An easier way to do it, perhaps.

Also, eight years on, I no longer like Florence or Matilda - so it’s lucky I had a boy!

DH also didn't like my favourite boys' name and our compromise name was Laurence/Laurie. We ended up having two girls, whose names we agreed on perfectly, but if we'd had a boy I would have been very happy with a little Laurie. It's a great name, really sweet and stylish, as is Toby.

Myfoolishboatisleaning · 25/03/2019 04:29

Jimmy? Every other child is called Jude.

Aria999 · 25/03/2019 05:38

I like Idris, not heard that one before.

Jude makes me think of Jude the Obscure , one of the most depressing books ever written. (Spoiler alert, his eldest child kills himself and the two younger kids then his partner leaves him for her abusive ex).

septembersunshine · 25/03/2019 12:37

Ahh Jude always makes me think of Judy and then I think Judy Moody.

Toby is very cute! Lawrence sounds very dated (in a bad way). Laurie is not great tbh, its almost Laura. Sounds and looks quite feminine.

Tobias Jude?? Toby for short?

Jessabean · 25/03/2019 18:38

I agree that providing you don't hate all the names on your husbands list that you should try and pick one of his choices as he has let you choose both previous names and he is still giving you input now as well - I think there are some really lovely names on there. Some I prefer more than Jude personally. Are there any you think could grow on you? Maybe try talking to your bump with them for a bit and see how you it feels?

I really like Laurence/Laurie. Although I would have thought of Lawrence as being the more commonly used spelling in UK though might be because of the surname spelt that way. Reminds me of Little Women and don't think would be out of place in the current trend of more old fashioned names making a comeback e.g Sebastian/Seb, Edward or Theodore/Teddy.

Love the name Rory- quite popular here at the moment I think though if that bothers you.

Tobias I like as well- would inevitably end up being shortened to Toby though if you'd be ok with that- though think is also a nice name.

The others aren't really much to my taste though don't think any are awful if you liked them.

cushioncovers · 25/03/2019 18:43

I have an uncle named Laurence and every time they holiday in France a lot of people laugh when he introduces himself, it's definitely a girls name over there. 😂

Ipanema01 · 25/03/2019 21:32

Ooh I really dislike both Laurence and Toby, sorry! My favourites from his list are Winston and Enzo.
I think I have similar taste to cbeebies too, she’s mentioned both my boys names and those on my current list. What about Otto, Otis, Caspar? Artie, Rudy?
