DH hates my favourite name, help!

I absolutely love the boys name Jude. However I’m now 35 weeks and my husband has steadfastly refused to even consider it, he’s been clear that he hates it ever since I first suggested it. So I really want to find a new name I can like as much, I don’t want our baby to have a name his dad hates. This is our third child and he went with my favourite both times, so it would not be on if I was to insist on Jude. Anyway - please help! He wrote me a list of ten names he likes and said I could pick any and he’d be happy. Of the list I like Tobias and Laurence, probably nicknamed either Toby or Laurie. But I don’t love either. I felt Jude was perfect as I loved the short but complete sound of it. And it feels classic but not overused - although I know it’s popular. Our daughter is Etta to give a sense of our taste, and we were thinking of Lina or Delia if this one had been a girl. Any suggestions???

I agree with asking him during or shortly after the birth!

Why? Is it because you think he is a lesser parent and his solid dislike of a name doesn't count? It is because you think he should be railroaded into it somehow just because he isn't the one who has given birth?

Sillybonkers · 24/03/2019 14:09

Laurence is a great name. Could Jude be a middle name?

TheVanguardSix · 24/03/2019 14:13

Julian?
Rex?

No to Toby and Laurie.

Chilledout11 · 24/03/2019 14:13

I like Jude but what about

Edward (Ed)
Luke
Hugh

lms2017 · 24/03/2019 14:18

My son is Jesse.

I liked Jude until I heard so many Judes being called in the park one day ! The name didn't appeal to me after that x

lms2017 · 24/03/2019 14:19

I just heard a Zachary in the park earlier which I quite liked which suprised me !

Not sure I like Zac though!
It's so tough ! Xx

WhiteWine4TheLady · 24/03/2019 14:23

I love Jude. Laurie is a lovely name, too.

Stuckforthefourthtime · 24/03/2019 14:28

I also loved Jude and my DH vetoed it. Ds2 and DS3 both have Judes in their class, and one is known as Rude Jude and one as Judy... So I'm not so unhappy now!

There are lots of lovely names, hope you can find one Smile

Thanks for all your replies. I’m not planning on re-suggesting Jude after I give birth because I’m pretty sure he would agree at that point, but he hates it and has told me that, plus he let me name the older two. It’s sad to let it go, but I know I have to. I just want to make sure there is nothing else out there I could love as much - I really do adore it (I see that not everyone does though!) Anyway, along with tobias and Laurence (my favourites from his list) his suggestions are Alfred, Isaac, Xavier, Winston, Enzo, Zachary, Wyatt, Rory, Charles, Idris and Asher. So lots to work with! He says he’d be happy with any of those and I can choose.

Rude Jude! I love it. My kids said they would call him Jude The Dude which I think put my DH off even more @stuckforthefourthtime.

@cbeebiesrehab I love all the names you suggest but they don’t work for one reason or another - do you have any more for me? Among the names you suggest are my best friends name, my cousins two kids, and my oldest son!

Interesting how people are saying Jude and to a lesser extent Laurence are feminine names. That doesn’t put me off at all, I wonder why it would. I like the idea of a name that can be used for both a boy and girl. I love Dylan for that reason, I know lots of boy Dylans in England and lots of girl Dylans in the US where we live now (although moving back to London when baby is 18 months). We have a Dylan in the family already though, so not on our list.

Eliel? Goes great with Etta and sort of similar to your girl name options.

Calixtine · 24/03/2019 15:02

Idris!!!! Amazing name, go with that.

SoupDragon · 24/03/2019 15:13

Idris!

My fantasy DS is called Idris (I am too old :))

PineapplePatty · 24/03/2019 15:18

Jude is really overused here.

I agree with your DH.

What names does he like?

EggysMom · 24/03/2019 15:32

You could go with Lawrence (Lawrie) as an alternate spelling, if Laurence seems too feminine.

Marcipex · 24/03/2019 15:44

I like Lawrence too. Better than Laurence as there are so many Lauren's.

I love Delia, pretty and under used.

Sorry but I agree with your DH that Jude is awful. Girly. I know one called Judy, tho people will say that never happens.

Marcipex · 24/03/2019 15:45

Idris is great.

Rainatnight · 24/03/2019 15:48

DP also hated my first choice name and I tried to look on it as our first test of compromising as parents. So I did. DD now has a completely different name that really shorts bee.

Rainatnight · 24/03/2019 15:49

What did my phone do there? SUITS HER, FGS

mummmy2017 · 24/03/2019 15:54

Tobias.. never met one but sounds so posh.
Toby. As a nickname for sure.
Jude. Always reminds me of Judas. Not good.

Sakura7 · 24/03/2019 16:01

Rory is the best on that list by far. Charles is nice too, with Charlie as a nickname.

Idris just sounds like you're naming him after the actor, that could date quite badly IMO.

abcriskringle · 24/03/2019 16:12

Xavier or Idris definitely! Brilliant names! Your husband has a good list there imo.

beela · 24/03/2019 16:24

Idris!!!

I wanted it for dc2 but a) DH vetoed and b) she turned out to be a girl. Alfred was also on my list but slightly further down.
