Think we've finally decided on a girls name.......

Mila Esme (Mee-Lah Ez-May)

Sibling is Noah. What do you all think?

It's nice

LemonBreeland · 23/03/2019 14:20

It's okay, but both names can be pronounced in different ways. Are you prepared for that. I would probably pronounce it M-eye-la Ezmee for example

heartoftheocean · 23/03/2019 14:21

LemonBreeland M eye la would be spelt Myla though. Its a completely different name.

MyNewBearTotoro · 23/03/2019 14:25

I agree it’s nice. There are some different ways to province both names (The Mila I know is My-lah rather than Me-lah and I know several Esmes with some Ez-may and some Ez-mee) but I’m sure once you’ve introduced DD to people once it shouldn’t be too difficult for people to pronounce correctly.

JimJamJarmusch · 23/03/2019 14:27

My instinct would be to pronounce it m-eye-la es-mee - don't know if that's just based on my accent and local habits. I actually think mee-la es-may is a lot prettier!

BloominSloe · 23/03/2019 15:13

It's a really lovely name OP. I love Mila!

Mila is pronounced Meela. There is no other way to pronounce it. If you've heard it pronounced another way then they are wrong and have badly anglicised a name to suit themselves. It's a name of Eastern European origins (I am half Serbian), it's the short form for many Slavic names with Mila in them and the correct pronunciation is Meela. Milena, Ludmila, Mileva etc. M-eye-la is spelt Myla/Mylah.

aliceandkids77 · 23/03/2019 15:53

gorgeous name OP! i know a little Mila and she suits her name perfectly, I have no doubt your little one will too! x

HeronLanyon · 23/03/2019 15:57

Both great names. Mila - my
A close friend has a daughter called this. To be really honest I struggle horribly with how to pronounce it. I simply can’t remember. I know one is right and one wrong but then can’t come down on one side or another. This is my problem I know. I find it the number 1 all-time confusing name for me.

Nobhobs · 23/03/2019 15:58

Would never in a million years think of pronouncing Mila as M-eye-lah. Completely different name. Don't let people talk you out of it OP, it's a gorgeous name.

lisamac28 · 23/03/2019 16:02

Lovely name and I would pronounce it Mee-lah.

PocaMiseria · 23/03/2019 16:08

Mila - eye, like Miles..... or are you going to tell me that's pronounced Meals?
You are trying to import the Eastern European pronounciation and it won't wash in English. if your surname is Kowalski or Knavs you might get away with it.
Otherwise not.

lisamac28 · 23/03/2019 16:12

PocaMiseria

Miles has an e, so that changes some words...they teach it in schools as magic e. Win with an e becomes wine etc.

BloominSloe · 23/03/2019 16:28

PocaMiseria - Oh Ok so we shouldn't pronounce names and words the correct way because they are foreign and 'wont wash in English'?! Wow!
How utterly ignorant of you.
Maybe I should tell my Spanish friend Jorge that his name is not English so Im under no obligation to pronounce it correctly and will call him by a completely different name from now on.

SweetbutaPsycho · 23/03/2019 16:36

Sorry but I'd also pronounce Mila 'My-la' probably because of Miley being pronounced 'My- ley' also it reminds me of Milia like the wee white spots. I love Esme though and would d?say 'Es-May'

heartoftheocean · 23/03/2019 16:43

SweetbutaPsycho You somewhat contradict yourself...... you say you would pronounce Mila My-La however you say it reminds you of Millia which is pronounced mee-le-uh not my-lia.

RoomForMore · 23/03/2019 16:47

I love it! I'd pronounce it Mee-lah Ez-me but I'd be happy to be corrected on the Esme bit Smile people might not say them correctly straight away but it doesn't take a minute to tell them how it's pronounced.

AuntMarch · 23/03/2019 16:47

Miley has the e.

Mila is Meela to me without giving it a second thought.
It's nice enough.

SweetheartNeckline · 23/03/2019 16:47

I love the name Mila and have only ever heard it pronounced Mee-lah (well, Mee-lur as I'm in the Midlands and we say everything a little bit flatter than usual)! Great choice.

WantRapunzelLocks · 23/03/2019 16:50

I think a lot of people will pronounce it as my lah, regardless of the fact that's it's wrong. For the record I would pronounce it meela ezmee.

That might not bother you, but worth thinking if it will eventually bother your child.

WantRapunzelLocks · 23/03/2019 16:52

Also Noah and Mila are very similar if your pronouncing them correct. Does this bother you?

grasspigeons · 23/03/2019 17:02

Its a pretty name.

I know that some people might mispronounce it if they see it written down first, but a lot of the time surely you are introducing yourself or your child verbally.

LittleKitty1985 · 23/03/2019 17:04

I'd pronounce it My-La Es-Me. Do you really want them to spend their whole life having to correct people's pronunciation of their name?

JimJamJarmusch · 23/03/2019 17:04

a lot of people will pronounce it as my lah, regardless of the fact that's it's wrong

As this thread demonstrates! It's all very well huffing that that's "just wrong", but clearly a significant proportion of people will get it "just wrong" until they've been told otherwise. That may not bother the OP. It's not difficult to remember to pronounce it correctly once you've been told. But the original question was whether the OP would be irritated by frequently having to correct people. That's worth bearing in mind!

Duckee · 23/03/2019 17:04

People are being really picky and difficult on this thread. There are so many names that aren't pronounced the way they look or with multiple pronunciations and somehow those people all manage to survive.

The name is lovely, OP. When you introduce your child verbally then people will know how to pronounce it. There is no need for all the angst on this thread over something as trivial as this.

Luglio · 23/03/2019 17:07

I assumed Mila would be pronounced like Milo.

English is not amenable to pronunciation rules, not matter how much one stamps one's foot.
