Liking the Name Theon for a baby boy as 2 of the names on my list were Theo and Leon, but I wanted to find a name a little less popular, and although I like Theon.. I can't get passed the GoT association, would this put anyone else off??

It's far too GOT to be useable I think.

Theo is a bit wet IMO, but Leon is great & I don't think it's that popular. I know Leo is, but Leon not so much.

NunoGoncalves · 12/03/2019 01:52

Leon isn't super popular and is much nicer than Theon.

And no, I could never use a name that is so blatantly taken from GoT. I'd be embarrassed to tell people!

ElizabethMainwaring · 12/03/2019 02:07

I know a Theon who is 13, so the name obviously predates GoT (which I've never seen). Didn't realise there was a connection. I'd go for it, it's a nice name and doesn't sound 'made up'.

Luckingfovely · 12/03/2019 02:20

No no no

Isadora2007 · 12/03/2019 02:22

Nope. It’s not a good name at all
And far too GOT. Go for Leon

Topseyt · 12/03/2019 02:23

I prefer Theo or Leon personally. Or Leo.

ApplestheHare · 12/03/2019 02:56

Theo or Leon are nice. Atm the GoT association will be made a lot and you never know what might happen in the final series.

Justagirlwholovesaboy · 12/03/2019 03:00

I only read the first few words and I thought got

Tavannach · 12/03/2019 03:02

It just doesn't sound nice.

dreichuplands · 12/03/2019 03:16

It would put be off, I like Theo and don't mind Leon.

spugzbunny · 12/03/2019 03:49

@ElizabethMainwaring The first book was released in 1996 so it could absolutely be from Game of Thrones. It doesn't appear to be one that George RR has made up tho

DameSylvieKrin · 12/03/2019 03:51

You know what happens to Theon? Because your son’s classmates will.

Insomnibrat · 12/03/2019 04:19

It sounds like Hyundai's new 4x4.

The new Hyundai Theon. Live life off-road.

Sessy19 · 12/03/2019 06:28

It’s not the GoT connection that’s awful, it’s the word I’m afraid.

GoT connotations aren’t unreasonable, cult literature has been the instigator of lots of name fads to no detriment

ElizabethMainwaring · 12/03/2019 06:44

Thanks Spugz! I did wonder about the books after I'd posted...

Bloomburger · 12/03/2019 07:00

If kids pronounce it improperly as an F rather than a Th then it'll just sound like a girls name.

Ohyesiam · 12/03/2019 07:01

Sounds like a brand name to me.

BertrandRussell · 12/03/2019 07:01

I don t watch GOT- but I made the connection immediately.

bellinisurge · 12/03/2019 07:06

There were 60s films and TV shows that had a really glamorous Sharon or Tracey. Alessandra Bastedo, Diana Rigg, anyone? Presume that's why those names first got popular for girls.

DameSylvieKrin · 12/03/2019 12:05

Yeah but how aspirational is a male character without a penis?

TheRedFox · 12/03/2019 12:29

I think it just really sounds like a combo of Theo and Leon.

BertrandRussell · 12/03/2019 12:30

I reckon naming someone after a character in a long running series who is still alive is a BIG mistake.....

IVflytrap · 12/03/2019 12:36

Theon is an Ancient Greek name. However most people will think of the Game of Thrones character - quite a few unfortunate associations there. I suppose the question is, will anyone care once the show's over?

kaytee87 · 12/03/2019 12:37

Leon is much nicer and isn't overly popular at all.

IncrediblySadToo · 12/03/2019 12:37

I’ve never watched GoT & thought you’d done a cut & shunt & come up with a daft hybrid. Oops. Anyway, I don’t like it as a stand alone name and if it is indeed the name of a character without a penis it would be ridiculously stupid to call your child this. Millions of names out there...
