Evelyn or Emelia??

I think I like the name Evelyn with Evie for short. DM likes it but is really keen on Emelia. Which doesn't do much for me but could grow on me ... also not sure what we would want to shorten it to. Thoughts please ...

Both lovely names. Emilia could get shortened to Emmi/ Emmy or even Lia. I think I would go with Evelyn as I like ‘vintage’ names.

Zogsyoungersister · 10/03/2019 10:33

Evelyn is more classic and prettier IMO.

Emilia will constantly be getting mistaken for Amelia (friend has this issue). And Amelia is very popular.

Saffrona · 10/03/2019 10:43

I prefer emelia to Evelyn. I know Evelyn is a classic traditional name but can’t get passed the “lyn” ending which makes it feel Americanised. I prefer the spelling Emilia to emelia.

AuntMarch · 10/03/2019 10:45

I know a Millie who is Emelia. Evelyn is on my list, Emelia isn't but only because I know of several. I like Amelie too though. (And Emily.)

WinterRose92 · 10/03/2019 10:49

Both are absolutely gorgeous but Evelyn just tips it for me x

lanesra2 · 10/03/2019 11:13

Thank you everyone - I reckon we will go with Evelyn although will wait until we see her first before making final decision!

I do like Amelie too but DH not keen

SweetButaPsycho · 10/03/2019 11:15

I like Evelyn best.

MollyHuaCha · 10/03/2019 11:34

Evelyn. But be aware there is more than one pronunciation.

lanesra2 · 10/03/2019 11:36

That's the next thing we need to decide on - how it should be pronounced!

BlueMerchant · 10/03/2019 11:39

Evelyn pronounced Eve-lyn.
Emelia/Amelia type names are too common.

WoahThereMama · 10/03/2019 12:52

I like Evelyn but really dislike Evie/Eva. They are everywhere to the point where it’s a yawnsome name. I don’t see why it needs a nickname.

As a PP said Emelia will constantly get mistaken for Amelia.

brizzlemint · 10/03/2019 12:57

How about Emilia or Emily?

I don't like Evelyn, it's very dated.

chiarazuri · 10/03/2019 14:37

Emelia sounds beautiful!

Firsttimemama2017 · 10/03/2019 14:38

I prefer Evelyn
Emelia is pretty but she would spend her whole life telling people it's not Amelia!

Shadow1234 · 10/03/2019 15:20

Evelyn by miles.

VelvetPineapple · 10/03/2019 15:27

Emelia is too similar to Amelia. You’re more likely to get away with Emilia due to its similarity to Emily and the fact that everyone knows the famous actress with that name.

starzig · 10/03/2019 15:30

Evelyn but not Evie

RuthW · 10/03/2019 16:02

I love Evelyn but can't bear that it is pronounced three ways

Eve lyn
Ev lyn
Ever lyn

DizziLizzy · 10/03/2019 16:27

Emelia autocorrects to Emilia on my iPhone....

Also I know one who pronounces it Em-ee-Lee-ah and another who is Emily-ah

FurrySlipperBoots · 10/03/2019 16:28

Don't like either of the long names but Evie is cute. Edie is too. I used to be a nanny to an Edie.

han01uk · 10/03/2019 16:32

We have an Emelia. Most people call her Milly/Millie,but I still call her Emelia most of the time. I emphasise the E so most people actually do cotton on the different spelling but we do also spend a lot of time saying "Emelia spelt E-m-e...."!!

Happyandglorious · 10/03/2019 19:55

To me, Evelyn is in the ranks of Babara, Marilyn and Sandra etc
An old woman name that is not old lady chic.
It seems popular on mn but I find it boring and old fashioned.
Sorry

Stuckforthefourthtime · 10/03/2019 19:59

Emelia sounds a bit made up Vs Emilia (lovely) or Amelia.

Evelyn is nice but there are a ton of Evies around here.

I'd go for Emilia or Evelyn nicknamed Eva...

3in4years · 11/03/2019 17:56

Evelyn is beautiful and classic.
Emilia I don't like at all.

Crunched · 11/03/2019 18:01

Why do people keep saying Emilia ( unless like DizziLizzi device autocorrects), this is different to Emelia, lots more ‘eeee’ sound than Emilia.
I know an Emelia known as Mimi which is nice and suits her.
