Baby name Gene?

[Supposedly]

Hey everyone, we are due our first baby (a boy) in 5 weeks. We have always loved the name Gene for a boy, but we are having cold feet as we are worried people might think it sounds a bit feminine?
Other alternatives we have, but like less, are Art, Jude or Hugh.
What do people think of Gene??! Feel like we are getting tight on time now 😂

It's a diminutive of Eugene, and while I would normally suggest putting the long form on the birth cert, Eugene is so awful that I won't in this case

I'd say no, don't set your kids up to be bullied. Choose a boys name there are plenty. If Gene is going to live a nice middle class life maybe but imagine him working on a building site, what's cute as a 3 yr old isn't necessarily cute at 25.

Jayney, I know what you mean which is why we have a niggling doubt. But Gene is actually a boys name (Jean being the feminine) and there have been many men in the public eye with the name. Gene Kelly, Gene Autry, Gene Wilder etc (although they’re all from the distant past).

Gene is a wonderful name I like it a lot, I work with children and have only have known 1 and that was 8ish years ago

I like it but I love Art and Jude! Not so keen on Hugh.

I now the most adorable Gene. He is 4 now and is just lush. Go for it. It isn't super common but it isn't out there weird either. Do it.

Interesting thread! Eugène ( French prom a bit like 'Yew-Jenn' with a soft jh kind of sound) is a much-used name in DH 's family and he is quite keen on it but I'm not such a fan of it's anglicised pronunciation ('Yew-jeen' which is inevitable) or shortened to Gene (just not my style of name) - also I think of Gene as being quite American (Gene Hackman etc?). However I'm very keen on using family names! Another one is Prospèr which is hard to use too!

Some great Genes there from the (not that distant) past ... I wonder though if it's a bit dated in a somewhat different way to other names because 'gene' is now so much a science term in a way it wasn't when the name was popular?

I have major issues with the name Gene. Or the female name Jean.

I have known one of each. This is going to sound really immature but I find the following very awkward:

"Hi Gene!" sounds like hygiene
"How are you Gene?" sounds like Eugene

I know it sounds so silly but for that reason, I'm not a fan.

I think you’d be fine with Gene written down but as the famous ones are distant now I think people would hear it as Jean which might be a bit tiresome. Art would be pretty unusual as well. Cute for a kid but I think you’d have to be quite a cool adult to carry it off well and it is quite harsh sounding.

I so wanted this name for ds- dh said no- I love it. Definitely a gem.
